Man injured in bike, truck accident Sunday
Published Tuesday, November 17, 2009
NATCHEZ — A Lucedale man received serious injuries Sunday afternoon when the bike he was riding was struck by a truck hauling a trailer on Mississippi 555.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol and the Adams County Sheriff’s Office received a call about the incident at 3:07 p.m.
Mason Storm, 43, was struck by a 2008 Chevy pick-up pulling a utility trailer. Both Storm and the truck’s driver, Gregory W. Lee, 38, of Natchez, were driving north on 555.
Lee reportedly attempted to pass the bike. The bike turned in between the truck and the trailer, the highway patrol report says.
Mason was transported first to Natchez Regional Medical Center with severe injuries and then to University Medical Center in Jackson.
The highway patrol report said there was no evidence that Mason was wearing a helmet.

It's a shame that MS does not have even a helmet law in place for children. Most states require helmets while riding bikes for kids under the age of 16.
I've had my own bad experiences with trailers, extended side-view mirrors and truck-box surfing dogs!!
So, is this Greg Lee, ACSO deputy?

It's a shame that you think there out to be a law. People like you would have us all living in padded room and using sporks. People like you make the nanny state possible.
What there really out to be a law against is making more laws.

Its a shame that Mississippi dosen't have more respectful drivers. Everyone's in such a hurry these days & if the vehicle in front of them isn't going fast enough, they tailgate them , try to intimidate them into going faster. I've had a couple of occasions on Liberty & Kingston road where the ACSO tailgated me, if a deer would have run across the road, their squad car would have rear ended my bike. People don't realize that on dry pavement, a motorcycle can stop in ruffly half the distance a car can.

amen lost......
and there are many roads around here that just aren't safe for bicyclers, just not enough room , .....
drivers should realize bikers have a right to use the road, same as a any other vehicle,
sounds like the biker was lucky not to be critically hurt, hope he recovers quickly.....

There is something seriously wrong with this story. The man who was riding the bike is not Mason Storm, he is Nathan Seyfarth, and he has lived in the house at the end of Jamison Rd (right where the accident ocurred) since shortly after Gustav, and my wife has known him since she was a little girl. He was a common fixture in the old Pine Ridge neighboorhood. I too live on Jamison Rd right in front of Nathan and I happened to come up on the accident scene after they had transported him to the hospital. As far as how the accident happened I cannot speculate or comment on as I was not there. Just wanted to clear that up.

GROWN PEOPLE CAN'T BE MADE TO DO ANYTHING.
TAKE RESPONSIBLITY FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY.
CHILDREN HAVE TO BE TOLD.. NOT GROWN PEOPLE. HOPE THAT THIS MAN RECOVERS

From the story, it appears the driver was at no fault so I'm not sure what the point is in chastising drivers. It appears that he passed the bike and the cyclist obviously did not know he was hauling a trailer as the cyclist attempted to fall in behind the truck after the pass. I've almost made that same mistake myself.

Was it a bicycle or a motorcycle?

How typically hypocritical that you would advocate a general administering of a swine flu vaccine to ALL, but fail to protect a child from an accident.
"People like you" make the nanny state probable.....and the use of a spork would be all too confusing for you to handle.

RIGHT! HAD this man been wearing a helmet he may have simply gotten up and walked away.

Bicycles have no place on public highways. Vehicle (motorists) has enough to worry about. Like... ticket or click it, insurance, inspection stickers. If bicycles are allowed on the same public highways as a vechilce... then they should have laws too! BY the way, no one can predict another one's actions. The driver of the truck didn't know the man on the bike was going to act as he did and turn between the trailer and truck. I'm sure if the driver of the truck could have read the bikers mind... he would have never passed. The time line here tells me that maybe the biker should have given the truck some kind of a hand signal that he was turning soon. I hope for some that commented on this situation is never in a position to be commented on. I beg you all to pray for both parties in this situation.

They do. In MS, bicyclists have the same right to use the roads as motor vehicles and they must abide by the same rules and laws. Some laws are vehicle-specific, though.

I advocated no such thing. I merely contested the ridiculous notion that H1N1 was part of some conspiracy theory you believe. It is a safe vaccine and if people are concerned about getting H1N1, they should not fear the vaccine because "people like you" propagate ridiculous conspiracy theories.
The hypocrisy lies with you, state. You don't trust the government to administer a vaccine to the point you engage in nefarious conspiracy theories but evidently do trust them to micro-manage the personal safety of American individuals through restrictive legislation on leisure activities. Odd.

There is nothing more pathetic than seeing some kid try to learn how to ride a bike dressed up like a NHL goalie. The kid is moving slower and closer to the ground than if he were skipping but the safety nazis have decided that they know better.

Where should they be riden then? How dare someone use less fuel, live a healthy life style and get in the way of such busy motorists? If you can't look out for cyclists and manage to steer around them or any other thing, you shouldn't drive a car.

I dont understand all these negative people trying to blame someone for what obviously was an accident and neither one was at fault. I know the driver and there is not a nicer more caring person than him and I am sure he is really feeling bad enough about this accident and does not need all these negative comments making him feel worse. I pray for him and his two daughtrs that were with him and what this has done to them and especially for the bike rider that he has a full recovery and his family.

Crak...lin, your ranting rebuttal(s) have no basis whatsoever for the initial comment(s). Nice try, but unfortunately a half-awake fifth grader has better comprehension of sentence structure.
Reading is fundamental, not subjective.

This accident (situation) needs not one negative comment. My heart goes out to both parties involved. There should be something learned here for us all that has read this story. Look before you leap. There is a possibility that addtional equipment could be attached to a hitch ball on a vehicle. The driver of the truck could not avoid what happened to the biker, if so, he would have done just that. Let us all come to a place where we bow our heads in prayer for all involved. That's the bottom line!

Praying for this man. And the person that hit him. I can't imagine what the person driving the vehicle is going through. I know the guy's son and family who was hit, so please, keep your comments polite. They are going through...

Mason is my neighbor. He always wears his orange clothing vest and cap.
Mason had come by the house about 145pm and I heard him on his bike.
The highway patrol and the sheriff's dept need to patrol this road more often because the speeding is getting worse out here. I know this deputy probably did every thing to avoid hitting Mason, but it could have been any other driver that hit him.
I pray that Mason is going to be okay because I miss his bright smiling face when I see him.

Freedom, it was bicycle and he had put a trolling type motor on it. It is a kit he bought and put on it.

what? the article didn't mention it being a deputy that hit Mason/Nathan....
anyway it's just a miracle Mason/Nathan wasn't killed.....
bicyclists have the right of way, so do pedestrians.....yield, ...
and bicyclists should look over their shoulder before pulling out, never trust a cager ( driver in a car/truck) ).....be aware that as a bicyclists, any encounter with a car/truck will result in hurt YOU, not the car/truck...

After reading all the comments I wonder if anyone has thought about Nathan's condition. Last word was that he is still in critical condition, but he is holding on. He has had surgery to remove a piece of his skull and relieve the pressure from his swelling brain. He does still have one, and hopefully he will never read the horrible "know it all" and "I do this for fun" comments on this site.
Nathan (Mason) is a strong person and the family (he does have one) ask for your prayers for a complete recovery. When I heard the description of his injuries, I thought about "George" on Grey's Anatomy. If you watched that episode you can envision what Mason's friends(he does have some) and family are dealing with. We do not know if he will make it through each night, but the doctors are optimistic. Whether Mason or the ACSO deputy were at fault is of little consequence at this moment, a man's life hangs in the balance. He was a cute baby, a roudy kid, and grew up with his own set of issues. None of that matters now, he is struggling for his life.Pray for his family to have the strength and fortitude to go to Jackson every day to be with him for the 15 minutes visits, pray for the safety of the ones that are making that drive every day. Pray for his brother, father, uncles, aunts and cousins who have sat by his bedside and wonder if he will ever be the same sweet Nathan(Mason) they knew. Or just think about all the times you saw his smile and did not appreciate the person that he is. He is a fighter and I pray he comes through this ordeal so I can apologize to him. We love you Brother, keep fighting.

THERESA AND BOBBY, THANK YOU FOR SPEAKING UP. HE IS A GREAT PERSON. I HAD THE CHANCE TO TALK WITH ONE EVENING BEFORE HE WENT TO CHURCH. HE WAS WAITING ON HIS RIDE. MASON WAS BRIGHT AND INTELLIGENT AND IS A VERY UNDERSTANDING PERSON.
