Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol troopers investigate the scene of a fatality on U.S. 61 South near Kingston Road Tuesday night at approximately 10 p.m.
Pedestrian killed on U.S. 61 south identified
Published Tuesday, November 17, 2009
NATCHEZ — The man killed Tuesday night on U.S. 61 South has been identified as Rueben Riley.
Riley, 42, 47 Emerald Mound Road, had reportedly been visiting someone at a trailer park on the northbound side of the highway. He left the trailer park to walk back into town, Coroner James Lee said Wednesday.
"He was walking alongside the highway," Lee said. "I don't know if he drifted inside the highway or not."
The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating the death of the Riley, who was hit by pickup truck in the northbound lane.
Lee said the black male was killed on impact from blunt trauma to the head, neck and chest. Authorities did not have a positive identification of the victim as of 11 p.m. Tuesday.
The accident occurred shortly after 9 p.m.
Sheriff Angie Brown responded to the scene. Brown said first the Adams County Sheriff’s Office received a call that a pedestrian wearing dark clothing was walking in the median on U.S. 61 South. Then, a 911 call came in from a driver saying he had hit a person on the highway, Brown said.
Lee said the pedestrian’s dark clothing made him hard to see.
“The (driver) absolutely did not see him,” Lee said. “It’s just a total tragedy. There was an enormous amount of trauma to his entire body.”
Northbound traffic was diverted to the southbound lane for at least 30 minutes following the accident.
The accident occurred just north of the Kingston Road intersection.

Why are these people walking on the hwy in the dark with dark clothing...sounds like a death wish. This brings me to the people riding power chairs around town I have almost hit the red headed woman twice near and around Main st out in traffic . As well as the black man with no legs on the s curve on Liberty rd near Exxon.Come on people realize you are putting your selves in jeopardy take note of these horrible tragedies and stay out of the road ways.

Why would you be walking out there by the high way that late at night. And not only that but wearing dark clothes.

AND he was BLACK wearing BLACK in the BLACK...that's pretty bad.

Natchezbear, lately I've counted four different people riding these chairs in the middle of downtown streets. I can only figure the law will get involved once a tragedy occurs.

GOTTABEHAPPY, WHEN THEY SAY SOMEONE IS BLACK IT DOESN'T MEAN THAT THEY ARE AS DARK AS THE NIGHT. IT'S JUST A RACE CLASSIFICATION. THERE ARE LIGHT COMPLEXION BLACK PEOPLE................................JUS SAYIN.

kubiak, please do not make this tragedy racial. A man was killed last night, what does color have to do with it?

what?? I'm with Southerngirls...I wasn't turning this racial I was merely stating an obvious observation.

You have to wear hunters orange, when you are hunting. People that walk after dark should have to wear reflective clothing. Who knows, this may help on home burglaries. At least you could stop and ask the person his name and what he is doing. If he did not have reflective wear showing.

DARK CLOTHING AND WALKING AT NIGHT, NOT A GOOD COMBINATION.
This individual walks a lot from what I understand.
This man, has some issues that are soon to be revealed to the public.
REMEMBER HE DOES BELONG TO SOMEONE.
LET'S JUST PRAY FOR HE AND HIS FAMILY.

Issues or not, its really sad. I agree, everyone should pray for his family.

I have someone in my family that tends to walk the hwys at night sometimes. There's nothing I can do to stop it. I've tried. It doesn't matter what color or sex. Just pray for the family. I pray everynight that I don't get a call like that. Its so sad.

let's not forget about the person that hit him. surely this is tough on them

Could you all just be a bit more considerate????????????? He was upset, and not in his right mind. They just buried his mom earlier that day.
Family, My prayers are with you!!!!!!!!!!

kubiak, your a prime example that it always take a black to start a racial issue. Man shut up! It was a man wearing dark clothes that shouldn't have been there. What comment would you have made if it was a white man wearing dark clothes. Results are the same!

tradgedy... please focus on the family and the poor person that hit him. I heard he didn't want to get off the 911 call until someone got there because he was so freaked out. And, he will probably relive that moment whenever he tries to drive at night again, and possibly for the rest of his life.
And it sounds like they have ID'd the man based on Godschild77's response. and SIOUXLADY's. So, pray for that family, especially if they've already had a loss this month...

Y just jump on kubiak? Y not say something to gottabehappy too? That "observation" was obvious, with no need to be brought up. Kubiak was just stating an observtion Just as Gottabehappy was. If u r gonna jump all over one person, give everyone the same fair treatment.. We are all just exercising our rights to free speech..

I wish the Natchez Democrat would stop the comments all together. It is so sad how you people can get on here and say the most awful things not considering that people have families. You know what's even sadder is that some of you all live for this to sit on the computer and say stupid stuff. We all need to PRAY so much is going on in this world today people dying day after day and some of us still choose to say mean things about people. I was online the other day and read some of the comments that was said about the shooting with the two ladies that was attending Alcorn, it is so sad that people could just say things making a joke of the situation. This is the time to get your hearts right not say the things some of you say. We All Need to PRAY.

My prayers are with the family and with the person who accidentally hit him. This tragedy isn't gonna be easy on anyone. That's what we need to be focusing on here anyway, lifting these people up to the Lord.

This young man and family just buried their mother @ 1:00pm the same day. This tragedy will be difficult for the surviving family, so use compassion with your comments. We may never know what truly happened but remember if it had been your loved one, you would want ecouragement and compassion, not judgement or criticism. Please keep this family lifted in prayer!

The ND will never get rid of these comments because of the traffic and adsense click thru revenue . However , insensitive comments need to be removed immediately . Or better yet , disallow comments when death is involved . Some of these people don't understand loss until it hits home .

We are all God's children, brothers & sisters in Spirit, regardless of color or culture. May this man's family be comforted at this sad time.

ClarenzR, if you think that Natchez is the most racist town in MS, then you haven't been to many towns in the Magnolia State.

One more thing, what makes this town so racist?

Sad to hear, I know we were required to wear reflective gear in the military after dawn. My brother was killed in Lagrange when he was hit by a vehicle in 1991. This is awful news and my condolences go out to the family.

I don't know about Natchez being the most racist either . When Natchez high went to play Brandon I saw something there clear out of the 1950's . Their home side had separate stands . The whites/blacks didn't sit together . Some of the younger students from Natchez was surprised to see this . Natchez has it's problems but like Hambone said I don't think it's the most racist town in MS . Race relations should be a lot better than it is , especially since we are a southern town and see each other every day . I've lived in places in the U.S. where you didn't see black people for months on end .

Well ClarenzR you must still love it here in Natchez....you probably still come back here alot and you certainly still love it enough to get on the newspapers website and put your two cents into a town you hate!

Take a ride through Greenwood, MS sometimes. That town is literally seperated by the railroad tracks running through it. Everyone there has the understanding that if you stay on your side then we will stay on ours. However, the racial breakdown is about 80% Black to 20% White, and a White mayor was elected last year, unseating a Black mayor.
I know several people who live there, and what I say about the railroad tracks is a fact, not a racist comment.

so very sad all the way around. families of both the victim and driver will feel intense heartache. i will pray for both-that is a pain that is tough to carry

sad really sad
not smart to be stumbling out in the road in the dark, and with dark clothes.....the comment about him loosing his mother, and the burial the same day, is really heart-wrenching, he was probably in grief, and may have been drinking to ease his pain....thus stumbling across the road, I don't know and don't offer that in anyway derogatory, ...
and I agree with Natchezbear- these scooter/wheelchairs need to be illegal on the road- they have no lights, blinkers, etc. ......and they often ride those things into the traffic.....

This is really sad, The family went thru their mother passing and the same day loosing a brother who was not married or haveing any kids, Leaving brothers and sisters to try and take care of the high cost of not one but two funerals. .."Tiffany we love you and the kids and we will keep you & your family in our prayers" Be stong,
(Love, one of your best friends..Dad & Mom )
Our prayers are also with the other family. May God comfort and Bless all...

For those with racist guilt, I wish you could have seen what what i saw in Chicago,Just a few years ago. A company picnic was taking place in Grant Park and there were two groups playing football. One group was black and the other white. Two separate games! I would bet that if that group had the same picnic in Mississippi that there would have been one game being played with all the players together. So much for the northern myth of equality up there!!
