Grand Soleil faces foreclosure again

Published Friday, November 20, 2009

NATCHEZ — United Mississippi Bank has once again initiated the foreclosure process against Grand Soleil Casino Resort.

Grand Soleil attorney Kent Hudson said he is not at liberty to divulge details of the sale, which is scheduled for noon Dec. 8 at the Adams County Courthouse.

“Once again the company is working with the banks and we’re working to resolve it,” Hudson said.

Grand Soleil has dodged foreclosure two times before.

A deal struck between Grand Soleil and Britton & Koontz Bank kept the bank from moving forward on foreclosure of three tracts on land in February.

Also at that time, three Natchez companies — Good Hope Construction, Farmer Electrical Service Co., and JM Digital Corp. — filed liens totaling more than $1.6 million as a means of protection should the casino go into foreclosure.

Then in September, the casino struck a deal with UMB, dodging foreclosure again.

Rumors circled Thursday that the business had laid off multiple employees. General Manager Wendy Grandin confirmed some layoffs, but would not specify a number and said other employees were working.

Hudson last week confirmed the Grand Soleil had sold its casino boat, which had been docked at the Adams County Port since February 2008.

Hudson said the casino no longer had plans to use the boat in casino development.

Good riddance! In this economy the last thing this area needs is a vacuum to suck the few dollars left out of here, and send them to Vegas, which is where the main percentage of the money goes anyway!

The idea of a Casino is to take your money and only give back just enough to keep you going till you've lost everything you had!

We need anything that will bring in money. Casino, horse race, or ditch diggers. I only feel for the local contractors. Take a 1.6 million hit in good times is bad. Take it in this kind of economy and it is disaster. If I was any of these local contractors I would want free dinner and rooms at the least, and a good bottle of whiskey to help soften the hit of being owed this kind of money.

They laid off restaraunt employees except a handful and a meeting yesterday I feel sorry, for several of my friends that saw a great oppurtunity with this company and now or facing layoffs.

Natchez Enema,

I'll go for the wiskey!

Actually, even though casinos are a cesspool (sp?), they do draw in quite a bit of revenue. Catch 22.

I SAY WHAT WE NEED HERE IN NATCHEZ IS A SMALL ZOO FOR THE FAMILY, SOMETHING TO SPEND MONEY ON AND GET ENJOYMENT! NOT THROW UR MONEY IN A MACHINE AND LOSE IT ! I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST CASINOS BUT ITS NOT GOOD TO LOSE MONEY U DONT HAVE. FOLKS SPEND WELFARE CHECKS AND CHILD SUPPORT MONEY IN THE CASINOS WHEN IT SHOULD BE USED AS INTENDED.

There's still hope. I believe it's just temporary. With the boat gone, maybe they can pull out of it and make headway. The restaurant has fantastic food, and they're changing lunch to a $10.95 buffet Tue-Sat, so there's actually time for lunch there during the workday. Yea! Their rooms are very nice, too. If only they could just do business as a hotel and restaurant! The location is great for just that! A lot of people don't even know where they are (the old Ramada site).

We should be pulling for local businesses...they employ local folks! You never know how this may go. Just pray for its success, because it affects our town, its people, and how people see Natchez. With the lit bridge, and the view from The Vue, it could become another little place to go!

Enough of the doomsday talk already! People want employers to come in, but they talk them down when they struggle to make it here. And doesn't it seem that someone at the ND doesn't want to see it succeed? Is it just me or is every touch of bad news on the Grand Soleil prominently placed on the front page? What's with that? I don't see as much coverage on other new businesses' state of financial health. Ever think that potential local businesses might see this as a hostile environment when they look at all these negative comments on-line?

You say we need a Zoo? Go downtown and you will see the biggest one in the state at city hall.

To Ray1976....

A zoo. Is that a selfish want. Because if you checked, very few of the zoos, in this country actually make money. Many are support by organizations such as Friends of zoo organization.

no micro its not selfish, its thinking about children and families with nothing to do. thats why kids do crime , all we have here in natchez is for elderly, which is good. elderly need things too, but children are our future.

I think a zoo would be awesome and good for tourism as well as locals.

To all the nayayers of this casino, remember we are talking about 400 plus JOBS in this area and important TAX REVENUE for the city "where the Old South still Lives." If most people, who know their own financial situation, are so febble-minded as to spend their hard earned money on a casino, maybe they should just go downtown and let the hoodlums rob them at gunpoint.
Casinos force NOONE to spend their money! God gave you a brain, so you should to use it. We need jobs and Natchez needs tax money. Somehow the money will be aquired and the casino will operate. Then these people may sing a different tune.

I somewhat agree with CtheOtherSide,

The hotel and the Vue are first class, and the food and atmosphere are some if not the best in Natchez. There is nothing wrong with having some excellence in dining, besides fried pickles and fast food.

Let's hope the hotel and restaurant do make it, so we won't have another empty shell of a business, advertising the mis- management and poverty of the 49th poorest, and number one un-healthiest state in the country. We all have different opinions and experiences about Gambling Houses or "Boats."

Let me also apologize if I offended the fried pickle eaters, I's a do like em too when their hot. Really, lighten up a little people. Your gonna get through it.

Grungebob is right: zoos are not cheap. That is why every major metropolitan area has one, and why nearly all small towns do not. Ray1976 is correct too; in that, zoos add economically and socially to the tourist experience, as well as in overall community development, but again, they are not inexpensive, and especially in the current financial climate, probably not economically viable here. There could also be an issue with market saturation, as Jackson, Monroe, Alexandria, Baton Rouge and New Orleans already have zoos.

I was wrong. A Zoo may be a great idea. As some of you history buffs will remember - in 1810 , people traveled to Natchez from miles around to see the elephant on display at Texada. This was tourism at it's finest in the Mississippi Territory. No rooms were available, the Taverns were packed. In true Natchez fashion, everyone had a drunken party in honor of the elephant. Unfortunately, they started letting the elephant drink beer. What happened next is somewhat unclear, but whatever happened was not too good. The territorial legislature passed a law about drunken elephants.

So, lets build a Historic Natchez Zoo.

Yes Natchez needs a ZOO alright. One to hold all the "Thug Mamas" and their "Cubs".
