Falling debris injures two people

Published Sunday, November 29, 2009

NATCHEZ — According to a Natchez Police Department police report, two people standing outside of 519 Main St., the building adjacent to Mainstream Fitness, were hit by falling concrete on Friday evening.

A pile of remaining rubble shows concrete hunks ranging from minor debris to pieces approximately six inches in length and width and an inch and a half thick fell from the top of the padlocked building, hitting one individual in the shoulder and back area.

The other person reported he was hit in the head by a piece of concrete.

American Medical Response Ambulance Service responded to the scene, and both individuals were transported to Natchez Community Hospital for medical assistance.

Police Chief Mike Mullins said he was unaware of the incident and had no further information.

Seems like if the preceeding story is true, then the Chief needs to do so investigating?

The "COMMISSION", should have taken steps to make the CLARKE THEATRE safe years ago. They certainly are on Dr. Vaughn and you can't even see his property. They really need to "sweep their own kitchen" downtown.

Loose bricks are stacked on the south corner of the Institute building where they are in danger of falling onto the sidewalk. There are also loose bricks on what is left of the hole-in-the ground building on Commerce Street. These are also over the sidewalk. I'd love to see these situations corrected and for the owners to place a higher value on human safety.

Well although the thickness wasn't clearly stated in the article a piece of concrete 6" x 6" x .5" would weigh roughly 1.5 - 2.5 pounds, and falling from the roof it could cause some damage especially if it hit them in the head or shoulders. Not something I would want to be hit with.

Was this during the lighting of the tree?
More likely it was thrown at them than just sporatically falling concrete.

Pretty sure the building is owned by Dr. Arnold Feldman who also owns the Main Stream Fitness building. He had planned to put a swimming pool there for his fitness center. Main Stream has closed and the building renovations never happened.
The Killelea's were renting the building for a warehouse.
Hope the injuries were minor.

The United States Navy gave me a ticket outta Natchez in 1962, and gave me education, career, and the world. Natchez was pretty much at its terribly one-sided peak then, and it has been in decline ever since. Bricks falling from decaying buildings ... yeah, that's seems about right. It's all a metaphor for a town that put its eggs into a casino's basket and waited for something good to fall out.

crumbling old buildings in downtown business areas is not a situation exclusive to Natchez....

every, and I mean EVERY town in America has this problem....

Dr. Feldman owns the building....he has pulled out of his business interests in Natchez. He needs to either sell the building or make it safe. What if someone had been hit by debris and killed? Building owners must be accountable for their property...particularly when it is in the business district.
