Cathedral to honor Von Hutchins Friday
Published Thursday, October 1, 2009
NATCHEZ — Cathedral has had only one of its graduates go on to play at the highest level of professional football.
And on Friday night, the Green Wave will honor him at halftime of their game against Mount Olive.
Former Cathedral and Ole Miss standout Von Hutchins, who played in the NFL for the Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans and, most recently, Atlanta Falcons, will be honored by his former coach Ken Beesley and presented with a framed No. 5 jersey.
A reception will also take place following the game in the school’s cafeteria so fans can meet Hutchins and his family.
Hutchins is currently an NFL free agent after being released by the Falcons on Sept. 1. He missed all of the 2008 season after breaking his foot in training camp.
Cathedral athletic director Josh Loy said honoring Hutchins is something that is a long time coming.
“Cathedral has never had an NFL player before so to me it only makes sense to honor the only guy to come through Cathedral to make it to the NFL,” Loy said. “We wanted to do this last year, but it didn’t work out. This year we were able to work it out, and we’re excited about it and Von’s excited about it.”
Loy said the school is honoring Hutchins for not only his play on the football field, but for his positive influence off of it.
“He’s a role model for a lot of our kids,” Loy said. “They see that a guy from Cathedral and from Natchez can make it to the top of the pro game. He’s always been a high-character guy and preached academics to our kids when he comes back to the schools. He’s always been a good role model for Cathedral and we’re excited to honor him.”
Friday’s ceremony will include a recap of Hutchins’ accomplishments in high school, college and the pros. Former Cathedral coach Ken Beesley will then give a short speech about his former player before Hutchins will then take the microphone to address the crowd.
Hutchins will also be presented a framed No. 5 jersey, the number Hutchins wore at Cathedral and Ole Miss.
Loy encouraged Cathedral fans to fill the stadium Friday in order to show appreciation for Hutchins’ contribution to the school and community.
“We’re expecting a great crowd,” Loy said. “They can not only cheer for the team, but honor Von on the same night.”

Mr. Hutchins,
Congrats my fellow alum. A well deserved honor and it has been a pleasure to watch you blossomed into an awesome talent through out your career.
To the AD Josh Loy I must disagree with the stated quote below:
“Cathedral has never had an NFL player before so to me it only makes sense to honor the only guy to come through Cathedral to make it to the NFL,”
This is incorrect. Michael Richardson who graduated in 1987 and went on to play collegiately at La. Tech University was the first to play in the league. He was undrafted in 1991, signed to a free agent contract with the New York Giants and was the last player cut after training camp that year.

Michael never played in a regular season game. That is the distinction between the two players, and that's a huge difference. Congratulations to Von on this well-deserved honor, the entire City is proud of you as well as your fellow Ole Miss alumni.

Not to rain on Von, but I belive that Michael Richardson played in the CFL for Winnipeg and Ottana and was the CFL rookie of the year in 1992

I don't think anything that happens in the CFL could rain on anything in the NFL. That's like comparing high school and college.
