Alcorn State to honor McNair at Saturday's game
Published Thursday, October 8, 2009
LORMAN — Alcorn State University is dedicating the fall 2009 football season to its stand-out alumnus Steve McNair. A tribute will take place on before Saturday’s first home game against Mississippi Valley State.
“As Alcorn plays its first home game of the season, we pause to celebrate the life and legacy of Steve McNair, who is remembered for his commitment to service, contributions to youth and his dedication to the game of football,” Alcorn State president George E. Ross said. “McNair, a true Alcornite throughout his professional career and life of personal giving, will never be forgotten. To his family and a world of fans that knew and loved him, we will forever cherish his legacy for generations to come.”
The Celebration of a Legend Steve McNair program will start at 2 p.m. with an invitation only reception for the McNair family, alumni, faculty, colleagues and friends and will be followed by a pre-game tribute at 3:30 p.m., and ASU vs. Mississippi Valley State University football game at 4 p.m.
The halftime show band performances will be dedicated to Steve and Michelle McNair and Ms. Lucille McNair, Steve’s mother.
“Steve was a really good guy, and even though he became a big star he remained a very accessible, down-to-earth person,” McNair’s former classmate and friend Kimberly Smith Russ, who is now an associate professor and director of special projects for the human sciences department at Alcorn State, said. “He would come back home, to Mississippi, every summer and do a lot for the community and for the kids. The kids looked up to him and felt they too could be a success.”
A standout college football player turned 13 year pro athlete, McNair ruled the field in the years he played for Alcorn State.
McNair began his collegiate career in 1991 as quarterback for the Braves. Wearing No. 9, he broke and set many records, an impressive accomplishment that led to an equally successful professional career.
The ASU football team will be wearing the No. 9 on their helmets through the season.
ASU alumni, friends and fans are encouraged to be at the stadium for the pre-game program at 3:15 p.m. and wear No. 9 in McNair’s honor.

Sure wish I could be there to take part in the celebration of Steve's life and contributions on and off the field. Wish they will do a little something during Homecoming next weekend.
RIP #9 (Air McNair) we will always love you!
