Defending champs Centreville walk on ACCS's playoff chance

Published Saturday, October 24, 2009

NATCHEZ — With Central Private sitting at 3-0 in MAIS District 5-AA and having a week off, Centreville Academy needed a win over Adams County Christian School Friday night to stay undefeated in district play.

And while the Tigers had to win to set up its showdown next week at home against Central Private for the district championship, this game was equally, if not more, important to ACCS as a win would keep the Rebels in the playoff hunt by way of a wild card berth.

Centreville, which had already clinched a playoff berth, made sure that it would take on Central Private for the district title with a 35-12 win that pretty much ended ACCS’s chances of going to the playoffs this season.

The Tigers (7-3, 3-0) jumped out to a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and then led 35-0 at halftime.

“They were able to jump out to (a big) lead. They’re playing really good football right now,” ACCS head coach Paul Hayles said. “They lined up in the power set and had a powerful opening drive.

“We came back and threw a pass on 2nd and 10 and they intercepted it an ran it back for a touchdown. You can’t make mistakes against a team of that quality. We had no intensity on either side of the ball. They looked like a two-time defending state champion tonight.”

ACCS (5-5, 1-3) scored its only points in the third quarter on touchdown runs of 6 and 7 yards by Dillon Johnson. The Rebels finish their season next Friday night against Manchester Academy at home for Senior Night.
