Election commissioner predicts low voter turnout Tuesday
Published Friday, October 30, 2009
NATCHEZ — Based on absentee voting, turnout for Tuesday’s election won’t be anything to write home about, Election Commissioner Larry Gardner said.
By noon Thursday, 348 absentee ballots for Tuesday’s election had been returned at the Adams County Circuit Clerk’s Office.
Approximately 500 ballots have been mailed out.
Typically by this point the number returned would be closer to 1,500, Gardner said.
“I don’t think the turnout will be as good as it was for the presidential election,” Gardner said. “I anticipate 8,000 votes cast, maybe 9,000. Of 22,000 registered voters, we’ll be in the 35, maybe 40, percent range.”
And numbers on Election Day will, as always, depend on the weather, he said.
“Typically when you have a single race you usually have lower numbers because not everyone has a horse in the race, but with so many horses in this race, you might see more,” Gardner said. “I do think the (recreation) referendum will help this race. It brings another group of people into play in voting.”
Registered voters who will be out of town Tuesday or who are over 65 or disabled can absentee vote at the circuit clerk’s office in the Adams County Courthouse until 5 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.
The clerk’s office is continuing to mail out absentee ballots upon request, but those ballots must be received in by the clerk’s office by 5 p.m. Monday to count.
Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

If you don't vote, you deserve exactly what you get.

on yesterday, a person on Cox's committee's phone me asking to vote for Cox's on Tuesday, November 3, 2009. I was one of the citizen's of Natchez decided I wasn't going to vote. After talking with Mrs. Tillman for 10 or 15 minutes I had a change of mind. One of my concern, I ask Mrs. Tillman will Chief Sims, and the other employee's remain on his or her job?. Mrs. Tillman reply was that Cox's has no plan on replacing anyone, as long as he or she does their job. Let's vote for the man with the experience, have and has the experience, and most of all will do the job. VOTE COX'S NOVEMBER 3, 2009. I'M AN AFRICIAN AMERICAN, ONLY FOR THE MAN I THINK WILL DO THE JOB.

Godbold has also committed to keeping the staff at the sheriff's office, and he doesn't bother anyone with letters in the mail, phone calls at home, or BS adds in the newpapers or on the radio. Vote Godbold.

Commander: How would we know. Again I'm thankful for Cox's in having his committee staff do what they are doing. Because I would have been one of the register voter, that didn't Vote, because of lack of communication. I didn't mean to offend anyone, but just voicing my own opinion of what I would have done. I'm not knocking noone, now we know for those that's for Godbold or whomever. Again thank you Mrs. Tillman.

mrbobo: Yes she did inform me of her son. But you have to remember we all make mistake, non of us is perfect. Except one. As far as his body that's a personal issue. My main concern is who "I" THINK is right for the position, not anyone else, I can't even make the decision for my kids. We all have that right to vote for whom we think is capable of protecting the city of Natchez's, and again my opinion is Cliff Cox's. My aplology to anyone if I offend you by what "I" think is right. I leave you'll with a :). Have you yourself "mrbobo" seen the tatoo on Mr. Cox's. My grandmother told me while living "believe half of what you see, and non of what you hear".

It is nobody's business if Ms. Tillman has a son in prison. What does that have to do with her working on somebody's campaign? I'm sure that Mr. Cox cannot get her son out of prison in Kentucky so that would not be her motive - maybe she truly believes in the candidate she is working for.

Has he got any body piercings? that would certainly sway my vote.
My granddaddy blamed Hugh Hefner for all this body piercing. He said after looking at so many foldouts a nekid woman just didn't look natural without a staple in her belly button.

I'm voting for Chuck Mayfield. He has experience running patrol, as an agent, as an administrator, and with juvenile justice system. No other candidate has that span of experience.

This is why I LOVE these online comments, you can find out and read about all kinds of stuff that are often "hidden." People, vote wisely. Natchez is polarized enough, vote for someone who believes in the safety and protection of ALL people!

The important thing is that everyone vote...if only 35 percent vote then better that 6 out of 10 have no voice in government. Of that 35 percent who do vote then it takes less than 20 percent to elect the next Sheriff. Vote, vote,
vote!!!!

Uh, sailaway, we should only vote once. But if that important to ya...

Angie Brown has endorsed Randy Freeman.

get out and vote!!!!!! I'll be there-go Chuck Mayfield!!!!!!!

Angie Brown is endorsing Randy Freeman because he's kin to her and to most of Adams County. That doesn't mean he's the man for the job. He doesn't have experience as an administrator and he's also endorsed by Binky Vines! Since he didn't have the nerve to show up for the forums, how can he represent the Citizens of Adams County!

Come on welcometothejungle! Mr. Freeman was in Atlanta at his son's divorce hearing - a commitment he had made way before the scheduling of the forum. I don't care who you vote for but get your facts straight! Personally I can't fault a man who: 1. Honors a commitment; 2. Supports his family. No matter who you or I vote for we need to get the facts straight.

I would not vote for someone just because they vow not to let anyone go. The idea of a new sheriff is the idea of change. And for something to change for the better the bad eggs might have to be weeded out. I have no problem with that because the man that wins will have been elected by the people and in that, trusted to make needed revisions to the department. Oh and I believe Chuck is just the man for the job! Go Chuck!

Freeman was in Atlanta for an Braves Ballgame! He didn't even attempt to show up for the second forum. No excuse to be out of town for that one? Did he not have enough confidence to show us what he does know?

Just FYI: Cable channel 9 (for those of you who have cable) has lots of paid programming where they interview some of the candidates. I know I have seen Freeman, Cox, and Mayfield on there. There are also several programs with information on the Recreation issue that will be on the ballot on Tuesday....just in case anyone is interested.

If I remember rightly Ronnie Brown said he would not let anyone go either, and yet they left like rats leaving a sinking ship.
What else is on the ballot besides sheriff, judge, and recreation - anyone know?

Everyone has their opinion. Here is mine.Ray Brown will be the Sheriff because he is the right person for the job. All of these guys have worked in law enforcement but the truth of the matter is Ray has the attitude and heart that you should want in the person elected to this position. So on NOV.3,2009 all the citizens of Adams county should send the message that Ray Brown is OUR Sheriff. VOTE RAY BROWN!!!!! GO RAY
