Missing elderly man found in Texas

Published Wednesday, September 9, 2009

NATCHEZ — An elderly Natchez man with Alzheimer’s that went missing Saturday afternoon was found late Tuesday in Texas.

Adams County Sheriff’s Deputy Maj. Ricky Stevens said Marvin Darsey, 81, was found late Tuesday in a truck stop parking lot in Orange, Texas.

“A truck driver saw him just walking around in the parking lot,” Stevens said. “Fortunately the truck driver was able to get (Darsey’s) wallet and started calling some of the numbers inside. (Darsey) is extremely lucky.”

Stevens said reports indicate that Darsey simply drove from Natchez to Orange, a distance of more than 200 miles.

This could have been my father as he has this terrible disease. I wish he could still walk and drive. Thanks to this caring truck driver, some family still have their loved one.

Does anyone remember the case of the lady from Florida who was in the post office in Natchez, who had alzheimers? Her family was called to come get her. Thank goodness for these good citizens. They are blessed to come in contact with goodness.

i believe after a certain age people should have to take another test for driving because my grandmother died of the same illness and she got  lost right downtown natchez and she had lived her all her life.. this is sad but very dangerous...my grandmother would hit the mediums and curbs...could be a serious matter

if you see something that raises a flag to you as being out of place or it is a pecuilar situation take a moment to check it out or notify the local law enforcement agency have them check it out,the worst thing you can do is nothing, you just may save a life.Newton texas is now in the process of trying to find an elderly gentleman who has been missing for several weeks,This story has a happy ending thankfully to where the Newton County officials may not have the same ending we can only hope it turns out for the best.

It's always great to see things like this happen. This goes to show that there are still caring people in this world. I'm just glad to know that this man has made it back home safely.

I agree that at a certain age and with certain conditions such as alzheimer's a person should not be allowed to drive. If you are a family member of a person like this, I think the responsible thing to do is to make sure that they no longer drive anywhere or have license to drive anywhere. It's good that this man's family made sure that he had contact numbers in his wallet or else it would have been hard to track down his family members and get him home safely.

Thank goodness for the good samaritan who guided him until someone came for him. Alzheimers is a horrific disease and steals the mind . Had an aunt (in Texas) who was in her 40's, an accountant for an oil company, drove to work, went into her office, came back out and sat in her car, thank goodness she did not drive off and her husband came for her. She was diagnosed with Alzheimers. Some days we just don't know how lucky we are, right?
