Centreville cruises to 39-0 win
Published Saturday, September 19, 2009
LIBERTY — The Centreville Academy Tigers didn’t have to do much against Amite School Center Saturday, but they did plenty enough to cruise to a 39-0 victory.
The win was the fourth consecutive for the Tigers and their second consecutive shutout after defeating Tallulah 21-0 last week.
Cliff Hurst threw two touchdown passes in the first quarter and Zach Sinclair rushed for two TDs in the second quarter to give the Tigers all the points they would need.
The Tigers finished the game with 304 total yards compared with just 103 for the Rebels.
Centreville could have had much more, but coach Bill Hurst had his quarterback take a knee much of the fourth quarter so not to run the score up.
Centreville got on the board on its first play from scrimmage as Hurst threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Travis.
Later in the quarter, Hurst threw another TD pass, this one a 39-yarder to Beau Field.
Those were the only two passes Hurst attempted all night.
After scoring through the air in the first quarter, Centreville went back to the ground game in the second.
Sinclair had just three rushing attempts in the game, but two of them went for touchdowns.
The first was on a 3-yard run just 23 seconds into the second quarter and the second was on a 32-yard run less than 90 seconds later.
Travis scored the Tigers’ final touchdown of the half on a 21-yard run with 1:26 left.
Centreville’s back-ups played the entire second half, and Devin Hughes scored the only touchdown of the half when he fell on a teammates’s fumble in the end zone midway through the third quarter.
Travis led Centreville’s rushing attack with 78 yards on two carries while Hurst was 2-of-2 passing for 79 yards and two touchdowns.
Tallulah 20, WCCA 0
WOODVILLE — With Wilkinson County Christian Academy’s starting quarterback Todd Gonda injured, the Rams were already in a tough spot.
But it might not have mattered if Gonda were healthy with the show the Tallulah defense put on.
Tallulah’s defense sacked backup quarterback Trenton Hall nine times for negative 71 yards and held the Rams to negative 14 yards rushing and just 54 total yards.
The WCCA defense tried to keep the Rams alive in the game, as the allowed just six points in the first half, but Tallulah scored two touchdowns in the third quarter to put the game away.
Hall completed just 3-of-10 passes for the Rams for 68 yards while Tip McKenzie was the leading rusher, running for 46 yards on 12 carries.
Tallulah broke the scoreless tie with 11 seconds left in the first quarter when John Robert Fortenbery caught a 56-yard touchdown pass from Jes Shivers.
Tallulah then struck for back-to-back touchdowns in the third quarter to put the game away.
The first was on a four-yard run by Shivers with 6:21 remaining and the second came courtesy of a blocked punt. Cody Petty fell on the loose ball in the end zone for the final points of the game with 4:41 remaining in the third.
