Voter ID needed? Look down south
Published Friday, September 25, 2009
If no one is planning to stand outside the Wilkinson County courthouse Monday with a voter ID petition and a pen, someone should.
The August 2007 election in Woodville could easily be the poster child for the statewide campaign to require Mississippi voters to show a picture-ID at the polls.
Connie Hollins, who allegedly hand-delivered three absentee ballots to Jackson and assisted the recipients in voting, is the only person being prosecuted in what began as a storm of allegations after the initial election.
And if the prosecution proves that Hollins did, in fact, participate in illegal voting practices, she should be punished.
Wilkinson County was, and many would say has been, a hotbed of political scandal. Tampering with votes steals the very democratic process that makes our nation great.
Anyone found guilty of violating voting laws needs to be made an example of if we hope to ever have fair elections.
But greater than the outcome of next week’s trial are the efforts of many Mississippians to get voter identification laws passed.
Legislators have time and again said “no” to voter ID for reasons that don’t hold water.
Let’s turn our heads to Wilkinson County Monday, get out our pens and start signing those petitions for change.

True dat!
Nonetheless, quite interesting the angle that the ND is leaning on this one...

What is the big deal about showing some type of proof of who you are when you vote. To me, it can cut down on a lot of voter fraud.
If you drive a car, if you don't have a license, you could stand a chance on going to jail. Don't give me the argument, not everyone can afford a card. No pun, but I am not buying it!!!
GOD Bless the World.
JESUS CHRIST is coming soon

Maybe I'm missing something. Regardless of where you stand on voter ID, I fail to see how voter ID would have prevented the offense alleged in this case. A clerk is being accused of hand delivering absentee ballots and assisting the voters. Voter ID won't prevent that. Prosecution, conviction of the guilty, and appropriate punishment might. If you favor voter ID, wonderful. I would'nt suggest this case be the "load wall" of your argument.

For the Natchez democrat editorial board to find a person guilty before a person goes to trial sounds like the Republican editorial board to me. And yes we will be there in big numbers Monday with our pens but only to sign a petition against the District Attorney and the Attorney General office for targeting one group. Make sure the Natchez democrat editorial board be there to see whats in store for the lies you write in your paper. Besides ask your reporter about the testimony given in the last trial that the ballots were mailed from the clerks office. Are you sure that the Editor from the Woodville Republican didn't write this story?

This is really sad for the Natchez Democrat Editoral Board to print an article like this. You need to start reporting all of the facts instead of a one sided story misleading people. I don't think that there is anything wrong with showing a photo ID, but that will not solve all of the corruption happening in elections. Natchez Democrat report the facts and stop misleading people. As your reporter Vershal Hogan sat through the entire trial with the whites and only reported their opinion. That is why your paper is so small because you all are so small minded. On Monday the only paper I will have in my hand is a petition for people to sign to send to the United States Justice Department and Congressman Bennie Thompson to investigate the Mississippi Attorney Generals office and the District Attorney for investigating one party.

Thank you DEB. I think it is now obvious what kind of mentalities have been stealing our elections.

A picture i.d. will not stop voter fraud. We in Concordia Parish have to show a picture i.d. and we have a sheriff that has been beaten twice in elections, and he still serves as sheriff. We have had people vote in our elections that do not live even in the state of Louisiana, much less in our parish. Voter fraud will stop when enought people are prosecuted in a severe manner that makes them think---HEY I BETTER NOT DO THIS OR I WILL GO TO JAIL.

bee, if the law doesn't crack down on voter fraud, then the people will. We simply need the crooks/crooked voters identified. In the 1850's the people (vigilantes) cleaned up San Francisco when the politicians were too crooked to do it. It can be done again. Vigilante justice can work and does work when the crooks are entrenched.

I'd like to ask the commentors on this site what their solution to voter fraud would be and if it is of a concern to them ?

Thanks Natchez Democrat for this informative article! This concerns me because it is the county of my residence and I certainly do not see any thing wrong with presenting proper identification prior to voting UNLESS, there is something to hide. Just look at the tons of id that citizens present daily in routine functions. Almost every time a person cashes or writes a check to pay for merchandise, id is asked to be presented. I have no probs. with this; however, it will never pass in in our corrupt state and corrupt county of Wilkinson.

yesindeed1980 — The following story as reported by Mr. Koob quotes the two sisters who Hollins allegedly helped vote illegally as saying she delivered the ballots:

Wasting your time, DrunkenMonkey. Those two have already gotten the other thread on the trial closed. You can't argue facts and reason with blind hatred.

southernbelle, we could cut voter fraud drastically if we were to hang people that were convicted of it. But I don't expect that to happen. Voter ID is the next best thing. Honest folks hired/elected in the Courthouse is another. An end to gerrymandered districts would also help. Just some ideas......
