Accounting software on city agenda

NATCHEZ — Crunching numbers in the City of Natchez might get a whole lot easier next week.
City Clerk Donnie Holloway said he plans to make a recommendation to the Natchez Board of Alderman Tuesday for new accounting software, but additional research is still pending.
For more than 20 years, the city has used an in-house accounting program developed by City Data Processor Gary Valentine. Holloway said he has studied accounting software programs used in several cities, and has narrowed his picks to two — Springbrook and AccuFund. Both software programs are designed specifically for government entities including municipalities, counties and special districts.
Holloway said the city has been written up for its current software program during city audits for the past several years.
“Ever year we get written up by our auditors, and the only thing we’re getting written up about is our outdated software,” Holloway said.
The new software will cut down on paperwork, and allow Holloway and city department heads to enter account information faster and easier.
“We’re still researching figures right now, and I’ll have a certain figure by Monday,” Holloway said.
Holloway will make his recommendation during the Natchez Board of Aldermen meeting at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the City Council Chambers on Pearl Street.

If auditors have noted this in the past, why has it been ignored? This is just as behind times as Ferriday with its water problem! For me all it takes is the family vacation each year to other places to see how 'Mayberry RFD' this region is. And before someone answers back "if you don't like it, leave," I want to say I love it here, but I just wish it was more progressive. But Natchez/Vidalia has NEVER been accepting to change and getting off of its 'slowpoke' mentality. Also, I think that this is one possibly one good means for saving money with the city's waning budget that Holloway came up with. I can't belive I'm saying this, but good job Donnie!
