Camp burglarized, burned
Published Tuesday, March 9, 2010
WOODVILLE — Jay Himmel wants to know who burned down his camp.
Thursday evening, somebody broke into the camp at Piney Road and Old Highway 61 in Woodville, cleaned out the brand new single-wide trailer that was installed in September and then lit it on fire.
The thieves also stole tools from a barn on the property, Himmel said.
“The place is six months old, and it is burned to the ground,” he said. “We have nothing left.”
“It was a brand new trailer with front and back porches, and it was completely burned down — there was nothing left but the axle of the trailer.”
Items Himmel said were stolen before the arson included a Samsung 52-inch LCD television, three 32-inch Sony LCD television, a .444 camouflage rifle with a Zeiss scope, a .306 rifle with a Leupold scope, a pair of Swarovski binoculars, a pair of Zeiss binoculars, a Honda Rubicon Foreman Camouflage 4-wheeler and a 16 kilowatt generator.
An official with Chief Deputy Fire Marshal Ricky Davis’ office said that the state fire marshal’s office has a program that offers cash rewards for anyone who provides information that can lead to the arrest and conviction of someone in connection with an arson.
Anyone who provides such information can receive an award of as much as $1,000, and officials said Himmel’s case qualifies for the program.
And Himmel said he is willing to match any reward from the fire marshal’s office.
“We are willing to pay a lot in cash to somebody if they have any information connected to this,” he said. “We just want to see this person convicted.
Anyone with information about the arson can contact the State Fire Marshal’s Office at 601-359-1061 or 1-888-648-0877.

Thugs are not only stealing from folks.....But now they have started burning down peoples homes.....OR in this case the mans camp!
They must have left a ton of DNA or fingerprints all over that trailer for them to think they had to burn it down!!!
Loosers! I hope they are caught and convicted!

I am not a cop but if I were I would look at the adjoinng landowners or hunting Lessees of the adjoining lands or any recent club member who had lost his membership or had a grievance with the club. The cuprit is someone known to the club members and perhaps the least suspected. Wilkinson County is the wild wild west and I love it.

That girl on that sculptz.com ad up above sure does look like that foxnews girl named Julie. She must be working too jobs during the resession.

I feel bad for the guy but what in the world was he thinking? 4 fancy T.Vs ,probably the most expensive hunting equipment on the market............In a trailer in the woods in WOODVILLE!!!!!!! Come on now. Not a smart thing to do. Sounds fishy at the very least. If someone did break in and take these things............Thats the way you learn!!!!!

They will catch the thug and then, maybe he or they will be tarred and feathered! Probably not even from the area....

You've got to be a dam fool to leave that much of those kinds of things in an unattended hunting camp. What the heck were they thinking?

I am the owner and I truly hope this never happens to any of you. If people would start getting prosecuted and held reponsible for their actions maybe this would not be the "wild west." Since this has happened its suprising to know how many crimes in the area of happened and the guys still remain on our streets. Instead of calling out ignorance of a victim of this crime, maybe everyone should do a better job of finding and convicting these criminals. Then none of us would have to be worried about what we leave at our camps. There was evidence left, including fingerprints, and we will go after this at all costs. The article says we will match the reward but I will give $10,000 cash reward for the information that gives the conviction of these criminals.

It doesn't matter where it was or what it was. My parents taught me that "if it isn't yours then leave it alone". Too bad there are so many that never got that lesson and feel entitled to take whatever they want.

To hunter1982..... I'm very sorry for the things you lost,I'm just saying. that's a lot of stuff to leave at a camp in the middle of the woods. I know you probably worked real hard for the things that were stolen, but what in the world were you thinking? Thats not a smart thing to do. I do hope they catch them but I think it's very unlikely. GOOD LUCK AND I HOPE YOU LEARN FROM THIS UNFORTUNATE THING.

Sorry it happened, loosing anything to theft and arson is a terrible thing. Hope Mr. Hunter1982 aka Mr. Himmel had lots of insurance on his trailer and belongings.
Sounds more like a personal vendetta than just a robbery though. Time will tell, the answers will come...

WITHOUT EVEN KNOWING MR. HIMMELL MY GUESS IS THAT HE IS A HUNTER FROM LOUISIANA. SOMEONE BURNED SEVERAL CAMPS ALL AT ONE CLUB ON THE POND/ PINKNEYVILLE RD LAST YEAR. MY VACANT GRANMOTHERS HOUSE (WHICH IS ISOLATED)HAS BEEN BROKEN INTO TWICE. LOCALS WATCH AND SEE THE PATTERN JUST LIKE IN THE CITY. YOU HUNT ON THE WEEKEND AND GO HOME DURING THE WEEK. HUNTER 1982 DON'T EXPECT MUCH HELP FROM THE LOCAL SHERIFF'S OFFICE. ITS SAD AND I FEEL YOUR PAIN.

OF COURSE IT IS SOMEONE HE KNOWS.
4 HIGH DOLLARS TV, GUNS ETC.
SOMETHING JUST ISN'T RIGHT ABOUT THIS WHOLE PICTURE.
INSURANCE MONEY.

Every hunting camp my husband has ever been a member of has been broken into and items stolen. The members knew to leave nothing of value unless they wanted to lose it. It seems to be just the nature of the animal in Mississippi. Sad, but the norm. Sorry for your losses...

Set up a "bait" camp. When they show up, shoot them just like you would a deer. When you bring them into town drapped across your fender it might make the other idiots figure that burglary ain't the way to go.

Sorry for your loss hunter1982. I do hope that the punks that did this are caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Just a suggestion, but try setting up trail cams at the entrance to your camp. Photo evidence will go a long way in identifying any future intruders. Good luck and please let us know if they do catch these punks...and provide names.

Just doesn't add up to me. People that steal don't burn down the store, kinda like killing the cow after you milk her. Too much nice stuff listed as being stolen and it all just smells like fish to me.
Posted by revols (anonymous) on March 9, 2010 at 10:07 a.m. (Suggest removal)
The theft isn't nearly as troubling as the arson. People steal to gain what they can't afford. Happens all the time. But there was no personal gain to burn down the trailer. Just unnecessary.
Posted by hunter1982 (anonymous) on March 9, 2010 at 10:25 a.m. (Suggest removal)
For all of you who are suggesting I had something to do with this, the comments are simply ludacris. Just so you know the insurance we had will not cover all the losses and we have receipts for everthing that was there. The trailer is brand new and everything is 100% paid for, including the property. After I pay the $10,000 I will be very much in the red. The money here is not the issue. I want these guys convicted. I hope that some property owners will be thankful that people are going after these criminals. It will be in the woodville paper tomorrow and on news channels even in Baton Rouge.

The arson makes it look like insurance fraud committed by the owner, but could also be a clever addition by the real thief to make it look like insurance fraud so that the investigators will not look so hard for the real thief? Especially if there were similar burglaries with fires a year ago? Or maybe I need to quit watching the detective show reruns on USA and F/X and get up and do the laundry.

Hunter1982, the appearance of the first line of my post right below yours makes me look really insensitive to what you're going through, and I'm sorry it looks that way. Even though I'm anonymous, I really do worry about offending people here, especially those who have already suffered. It really sounds to me like the arson is the m.o. of a practicing thief. It takes advantage of the fact that a lot of the hunting leases are held by non-locals, and of the inherent mistrust of non-locals by locals.

NtzNavyMan, totally uncalled for. The man owns his camp, he should be able to leave whatever he wants in there without worry. What a sad, sad world we live in. Who cares how big the tvs were or how many he had. Lets focus on finding out who did it and get them off the streets. Obviously, they don't work hard for their money so if we find them, at least they can work hard picking up the trash on the side of the road!

WOW.. YOU PEOPLE OBVIOUSLY HAVE NEVER BEEN VIOLATED BY THEFT!!! IT DOESN'T MATTER IF THIS MAN LEFT A MILLION DOLLARS IN HIS CAMP. NOTHING WILL EVER MAKE IT RIGHT THAT SOME LOW LIFE, SCUMBAG, THUG WENT IN ILLEAGALLY!!!! DON'T TRY TO BLAME THE OWNER; WRONG IS WRONG. EVERYONE IS ALWAYS SO DAMNED EAGER TO HOLLER INSURANCE CLAIM, IDIOT, ETC. GET OFF HIS BACK. I THINK HE'S BEEN HURT ENOUGH.

LOVESNATCHEZ is right. Doesn't matter what he left at his camp....it's his stuff. If some people can afford the nicer things that does not give anyone the right to take or destroy it. Also, I should not have to limit my camp (or home) to the things that would not tempt a criminal. That is just absolutely stupid. Some people work very hard at life (education, career) and end up with the money to have nice stuff. It always pisses me off to see people act like having money is a crime. This is all I tend to hear from the same people who have made bad life decisions all their life. If I go to college and work hard for 20+ years I deserve to have it. If you don't - you don't! Also, to jump to the ignorant conclusion that the owner did it himself just adds to the reason I will never post on this site again. Very few know anything about what they talk about. That wouldn't be so bad if they were asking questions instead of speaking as an authority.

Dang. Four tvs in a single wide trailer. In the absolute sense, it was his stuff and he should have the right to leave that much stuff in a trailer that serves as a camp. In the relative sense, I would have never done it. Folks did not start stealing yesterday and they are not gonna stop tomorrow. If you catch who did this and hang them in the town square, some of the folks who see the hanging will steal something on the way home.

What are some of you people thinking. Who gives you the right to falsely accuse someone of potential insurance fraud or having something to do with this horrible crime. It is none of your business telling people what they should or shouldn't leave in their hunting camp. Maybe you are jealous and some people are more fortunate than you could ever dream and leaving big tv's and guns at a hunting camp is no big deal. Like the owner said, its not about the money or material things its the fact of the matter that some thug has burned down their camp. Set the jealousy aside and realize what is going on. "DUCKHUNTER" you have no clue what luxury is. Leaving these types of things at a camp does not consider it a luxury camp. The things that were stolen are common things found in camps. Maybe once you go to a real camp that is considered a "luxury camp" then you will wake up and not be so ignorant is accussing someone of being "fishy for insurance fraud". At "luxury" camps, they are houses, not trailers, where you have your own guide, chefs, etc. So before you judge get your facts straight!!!!
Posted by Greenfields (anonymous) on March 9, 2010 at 8:10 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Nope, sorry hunter0314, the camp you had was more luxurious than 95% of camps out there. You sir, are an "elitist".

Tell me this: If the trailer was burned all the way to the axle how does the owner know that all of these items were stolen and not burned in the fire. That is what seems suspicious to me. I have looked through the remains of very hot fires. Binoculars would melt including the glass lenses, as would the tv's. The only thing he would be able to tell was missing would be the metal guns b/c he would see the remains in the fire.....very very suspicious.

Greenfields, this was not my camp, this was hunter1982's camp.
Posted by hunter0314 (anonymous) on March 9, 2010 at 8:49 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Natcheznow, you don't know the whole story and were not there so don't be so quick to judge, or where you there, or do you know something about who did it? Seems very, very suspicious that you "know" so much about what happens in fires. Maybe there was other evidence to prove this. Dont be so quick to assume things.

I have a very nice camp with a lot of nice things in it. We hope that no one is going to break in, but we know it will happen sooner or later. We go to our camp weekly and I refuse to pack my tv's and other nice items up evertime that I am not there. It is ashame that now days you can't work hard and accumilate a few nice things before some jack*** steals from you. Some of you people need to get out more because you would be shocked at some of the camps that around this area.

Hunter1982 i really hope the cops do a good job and find the person or persons resposiable for your loss.it don't matter what you had in there and i'm just thankful you and your family were not there and just ignore all the bad comments... you know what they say opinions are like butts! everybody has one. i know you will never replace what you and your family lost .even if they find the crook.so you would be better off just keeping your 10k and start over but add more security and less attraction to what you do have behind closed doors.my opinion.... it's someone who has been in your home before and knew what was there.
i will keep you in prayer, again i'm sorry for your loss.it's a shame you can't own nice things and just be happy...

That is really evil, stealing all that stuff and burning the camp!! I doubt it's insurance fraud, no one wants to go through all that hassle, after working so hard to set up a nice camp....hope these scoundrels are caught, whooped, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law...then whooped again!!!
I'M LOOKING FOR A GOOD HUNTING CAMP TO JOIN!!!
Please drop me a note if anyone knows of a membership vacancy, close around to Natchez please. A camp in Wilkinson Co would be great! I'm an experienced hunter- bow, rifle, muzzleloader. And know how to work food plots, tractors, etc.......
Hunter1982- sorry to hear about your troubles in Wilkinson Co.
Did you guys have a locked gate up? Any hidden motion detection camers that you can use for identification? Most hunters have those motion detection cams up around feedrs to see what size bucks they have....use them to surveil the camp too in the off-season...
Hope you catch them, that reward should help!!

I fully understand and know that you should be able to leave anything you want at your camp, and frankly, I think I should be able to keep my door unlocked at times, but I can't do that, especially now. I wouldn't have such high-end merchandise at my camp. A nice 32 inch glass screen TV would do me just fine, but hey, it's not my camp. If the items didn't perish in the fire, local shops should be on the look-out for the items, that's if they are not in someone else's home or long gone out of this state by now. Folks, be careful.

Everyone seems to want to point their finger at hunter0314. I can't understand why a man would be willing to pay $10,000 for info leading to the arrest if he wasn't honest.
I just hope the thugs are caught soon, but of course they will be out on the streets again robbing other innocent people just like all the other thugs that have been robbing people.

I just set up a place in Wilkinson County and I purchased 2 Moultrie I-45 game cameras for security they have the telephone GPS system attached so that if they steal the camera the pictures have already been sent to a web site for me to retreive. Cost 30.00 per month per camera but I will pay 60.00 a month to make sure that my stuff is secure and if not I have pictures of who is taking it. Sorry for your loss I had 2 4 wheelers stole and after you lose something like this you get real inventive on what to do to prevent it again.

I know these people and to accuse them of insurance fraud is CRAZY!!! Everyone may have their own opinion about leaving/having nice material items but it's life, some have it and some do not. Duckhunter, triscuit, beammeupscotty and natcheznow this camp is actually owned by a father and 2 sons and if you knew them they would help anyone at any given time. YOU ARE WAY OFF BASE! Natcheznow, I have 16 years in law enforcement, you can tell if an item was left, especially TV's, crystal glass etc....
Some of the items taken were actually Christmas gifts given to the father by his office staff, it meant alot to him.
It seems these "LOSERS" left way to much evidence, DNA and other items for them not to be caught. I was told there is NUMEROUS amounts of local/state/federal authorities involved. Its time the "wild west" comes to a close.

I agree 2579ELS. It is nobody's business what was at the camp. The theft and arson should be taken seriously. We need to start setting an example for these punks that this type of behavior will not be tolerated.I hope that those responsible are caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. For the camp owner, sorry for your loss...and more so for the crude comments made from behind an anonymous computer screen. I'll bet that those comments would not be made face-to-face with the camp owner.

Big3 and 2008, that is not who did it. It was some “crackhead” who wanted money for drugs, stole all of the things they thought they could pawn quickly, and burned it to the ground because they thought they may have left fingerprints. Like the Wilkinson County SO would even bother to take fingerprints if they hadn’t burned it down. They couldn’t care less that this man’s property was robbed and burned to the ground, because he lives out of town and can’t vote for them.
GottaBeHappy, Speakup,Moondawg09, Duckhunter, and Greenfields. If you work for what you get and make the money to purchase it, it’s not “luxury”: It’s an honest purchase. It wasn’t a “rickety cabin”. It was a new mobile home with a front and back porch and not in the “woods”, it was in a populated area.
Siouxlady, you are just WRONG.
Beammeupscotty and Triscuit, you burn something down if you think that you left evidence. As mentioned above, WCSO wouldn’t have gone through the trouble to even check.
Greenfields, not only did you get the wrong person to complain to, but what if he is an “elitist” as you claim. He worked for it and EARNED it. He didn’t get it in the MAIL.
Natcheznow, do you ever think for yourself? The items were either stolen (what the “druggies” thought they could pawn) or burned in the fire (things they didn’t want). What is so very, very, suspicious to you? As I mentioned before, no one would spend that kind of money to establish a “camp” to turn around and burn it to the ground. Hunter0314 has a point there. What did you have to do with it?
Hunter1982, I truly hope that your reward helps you find out who did this to you. People in Wilkinson County, and obviously Adams County, have a different attitude. They think that you are some RICH person who was given everything that you have and were foolish for leaving it at a “camp”. Most of these people talking negative about you get their money from a “mail box” and have no IDEA what it’s like to actually work. They live in neighborhoods where they have to guard all of their possessions 24/7. They are jealous that you have things that Obama will not give them. I truly hope things work out for you and you get to the bottom of all of this. I know for a fact that your “camp” was NOT in the woods, but a populated neighborhood. Good Luck and post it back here if you get to the bottom of it, though if you do, they probably won’t even spend the night in jail.

RTSJR2, you are right on. I appreciate all the positive and rational comments. The others show why we are in the position we are in. Just so you all know. 2 arrests have been made. The other will probably happen today. 3 have been solved as of today and more will follow this weekend most likely. In the last 2 years 25 camps that we know of have been arsoned or robbed. We all have to come together and change this. We have proved its possible.
Posted by hunter1982 (anonymous) on March 12, 2010 at 2:12 p.m. (Suggest removal)
My camp was definitely in the woods and the people have definitely spent a night in the jail. The Sheriffs department and fire marshal are serious about this one and I think they will spend some time. No statutes of limitations on arson in MS.

To any of the negative peeps above, duck hunter, beammeupscotty etc......i think you owe the guys an apology. Accuse them of insurance fraud???? I was raised the same way with the remingtons etc...but you know what, it still does not give anyone the right to steal and arson. From what I was told the wild west is coming to a close. A task force has been formed and will be "extra patrolling" Wilkinson County.
FYI- duckhunter and others...you showed your as* protecting middle aged non working METH addicts that did this crime. you might want to support the victim not the suspects the next time you mouth off. I am sure hunter1982 and his family would love to meet you and Obama as youmail box approach the mailbox as you get your check next month.
