Preservation Commission OKs revised health center plans

Published Thursday, March 11, 2010

NATCHEZ — The Natchez Preservation Commission voted 7-1 Wednesday to approve revised expansion plans for Jefferson Comprehensive Health Center.

The commission last month tabled architect Johnny Waycaster’s plans, suggesting Waycaster move additional construction from the south side of the property to the north side. Waycaster granted the commission’s request.

Though the health center is outside the historic district, the commission reviewed the plans because of the health center’s proximity to the historic property Hope Farm. Moving the construction, Commission Chairman Tony DeAngelis said, would not obstruct the view of Hope Farm.

Commissioner Cornelius Bradley represented the dissenting vote.

The revised plans will now go before the Natchez Planning Commission, which meets at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 18, at the City Council Chambers on Pearl Street. The planning commission voted 3-2 last month to deny Waycaster’s original plans, citing safety concerns.

In other business:

4The commission approved plans submitted by Neil Varnell for repairs and exterior detail work at 205 Clifton Ave. DeAngelis abstained from the vote, citing a conflict of interest.

4The commission approved plans submitted by Conner Burns for repairs and exterior detail work at 201 Franklin St. DeAngelis abstained from the vote, citing a conflict of interest.

4The commission unanimously approved plans submitted by Butch Johnson for repairs with exterior detail work at 601 Washington St.

4The commission unanimously voted to deem the vacant house at 198 St. Catherine St., as demolition by neglect.

I'm so sick of this hysterical people blocking progress in Natchez for that is the reason our young people have to leave Natchez for jobs. I'm ready to see progress than to keep thinking you are living in the past. They don't pay taxes as everyone has too. I still believe a time will come when the people will have enough and over throw the hold back of the certain click.

"I'm so sick of this hysterical people blocking progress in Natchez" - Didn't the commission just approve the expansion with a 7-1 vote? Do you people even read the articles first or just comment?

Thanks homeboy! I was trying to figure that one out. What people don't want to realize is that we need the preservation committee, and the garden clubs. They are hard working groups of people, the only ones who care about Natchez and aren't ready to leave it.

They love Natchez because they control Natchez. They also turned who knows how much business and industry away because they wanted Natchez to stay a small, sleepy southern town, well they got it. Getting smaller and sleepier.

What I don't get is that they are all worried about this project because of its proximity to an antebellum home! It is not in the historic district. So, right across the street is an old Pik-Qik with some sorts of businesses, caddy corner is a building falling down by neglect with a hole in the side of it as big as a car, and a nice church next door. The elephant in the room is falling down by neglect building with a hole in the side of it as big as a car! And they are touting progress! What a joke.
