NATCHEZ — Trinity Episcopal’s first home baseball game of the season went from being a nail-bitter to a big blow-out win for the Saints with one offensive outburst Wednesday night.

The Saints and Silliman were tied 4-4 going into the bottom of the fifth inning when Daniel Dunaway stepped to the plate and singled to right field to start a string of 12 straight base runners.

When Givonni Dent’s two-run home run sailed over the right field fence 11 batters later the score was 15-4 and Trinity had won the game by the ten-run rule.

“That’s the way a lot of these guys are,” said Trinity head coach Mitch Ashmore about the fifth inning rally.

“People start swinging the bats a little bit and we get some people on and then somebody pops one here and there and it seems to get contagious.”

The win signaled the first victory for Trinity at their new home park. The Saints will be playing their home games at Huntington’s field this season.

“We’re glad to be playing somewhere we can schedule our own stuff so we’re a little bit happy about that,” Ashmore said.

“But, we still have a lot of work to do here to get it the way we want it but I thought overall for the first day it worked out pretty good.”

Trinity’s pitching was streaky Wednesday night but when they were not struggling with their command of the strike zone, starting pitcher Scott Turner and reliever Jake Winston were very effective. The two combined for 11 strikeouts and 8 walks while giving up 4 runs. Three runs came in the third inning off Turner and one of those was unearned.

The win gives the Saints a 2-0 record heading into their game Friday, which will be a rematch of Wednesday night’s contest at Silliman.

Trinity can take a lot away from Wednesday night’s first home game, Ashmore said.

“The thing about it is we kind of have a plan of what we are doing with the guys from last year but we expect some other people to contribute as we go along,” Ashmore said.
