WOODVILLE — Monterey softball pitcher Ellen Bairnsfather wasn’t the only area pitcher to throw a perfect game Thursday. Two members of Adams County Christian School’s baseball team did the same thing.

Jake Brumfield and Christopher Carrell combined to pitch a perfect game as the ACCS Rebels opened up MAIS District 5-AA play with a 15-0 win over the Wilkinson County Christian Academy Rams in four innings Thursday night.

Brumfield pitched the first two innings to pick up the win as he struck out two and walked none. Carrell came on in relief for what turned out to be the final two innings and he, too, struck out two and walked none.

“It was outstanding. It’s very rare to see a perfect game,” Rebels head coach Hunter McKeivier said. “They were able to throw strikes and get it in the strike zone. They played solid defense behind them whenever WCCA put it in play.”

As for the players’ reaction to the perfect game, McKeivier said, “I think every kid kind of knew it was there. There’s an unwritten rule in baseball about not talking about it (during the game). I think once they saw it, something special had happened.

“They’ve probably never seen one before (live) and they’ll probably never see one again live because they are so rare.”

And while Brumfield and Carrell were dominant on the mound, ACCS did get off to a slow start itself. After not scoring a single run in the top of the first inning, the Rebels scored two runs in the top of the second.

“We haven’t played a game in 10 days. They were leading with their front foot. We just had to make adjustments at the plate. I always tell my kids you have to hit with a purpose,” McKeivier said.

ACCS broke the game open by scoring six runs in the top of the third inning for an 8-0 lead and put the mercy rule in effect after scoring seven runs in the top of the fourth.

Christopher Perry went 2-for-3 with a triple and a home run while Ryan Goddard was 2-for-2 with a double.

ACCS (9-1, 1-0) hosts WCCA for a varsity doubleheader today. Game one of the doubleheader gets under way at 4:30 p.m.

Centreville 6, Central Private 0

CENTREVILLE — Hunter Devall pitched six innings of one-hit ball with 14 strikeouts and just one walk as the Centreville Academy Tigers, the preseason No. 1 team in Class AA, defeated the Central Private School Rebels Thursday night in the District 5-AA opener for both teams.

“Just an outstanding job. He’s an outstanding competitor,” Centreville head coach Jason Horne said. “They got the hit on him in the sixth. Left the slider up a little bit. He’s going to do what it takes to compete and get a win.”

Centreville (6-2, 1-0) scored one run in the bottom of the first inning before opening up the game with four runs in the bottom of the third. The Tigers scored their last run of the game in the bottom of the sixth.

Cliff Hurst pitched the top of the seventh inning for Centreville and gave up just one hit, struck out two and walked one.

“He’s getting back to pitching. He won’t be hitting for a couple of weeks,” Horne said.

The Tigers improved to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in district play. Centreville plays at Central Private today in a varsity doubleheader with the first game starting at 4:30 p.m.

Trinity Episcopal 9, Baton Rouge Home School 1

BATON ROUGE — Trevor Faust and Givonni Dent combined to strike out 13 batters as the Trinity Episcopal Saints defeated Baton Rouge Home School Thursday night at Baton Rouge Community College.

Faust pitched the first four innings and allowed one unearned run on five hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. Dent pitched no-hit ball with six strikeouts and one walk in the final three innings.

The Saints scored seven of their runs over the middle three innings to break open a close game. They scored their first run of the game in the top of the first inning before taking a 3-0 lead two innings later. They added four runs in the top of the fourth for a 7-0 lead before Baton Rouge Home School scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth.

Trinity scored one run in the top of the fifth and again in the top of the seventh. Faust smacked three doubles and went 3-for-3 while Kent King was 2-for-4 with a double and Sky Logan was 2-for-5 with a double.

Trinity Episcopal (3-0) plays at Centreville next Monday with the junior varsity game at 4:30 p.m. and the varsity game at 6:30 p.m.
