HARRISONBURG, La. - Services for George Sargent, 89, of Harrisonburg, who died Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at North Louisiana Medical Center, in Ruston, La., will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Kidron Baptist Church with Brother Ed Cotten officiating.
Burial will follow at Heard Cemetery under the direction of Young’s Funeral Home in Jonesville.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home in Jonesville.
Mr. Sargent was born June 3, 1918, in Harrisonburg, the son of William and Julia Maude Sargent. He was a lifelong resident of Harrisonburg and was retired from the U.S. Corps of Engineers and a member of Kidron Baptist Church.
Mr. Sargent served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 56th F.A. Battalion, which took part in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe campaigns and received a Presidential Unit Citation for action in the Hurtgen Forest.
He was preceded in death by one son, Randy Sargent; his parents; two brothers, Roy and Frank Sargent; and two sisters, Mary Sargent Rasmussen and Martha Sargent Tarbutton.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Sharel Huff Sargent; two daughters, Julia Post, and husband, Warren, both of Harrisonburg, and Shirley Linn and husband, Gary, of Grain Valley, Mo.; two sons, Tim Sargent and wife, Frances, both of Eldorado, Ark., and Kevin Sargent of Alexandria, Va.; and eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be friends of the family.
