William Marvin Simonton, Natchez

NATCHEZ — Graveside services for William Marvin Simonton, who died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, at Natchez Regional Medical Center, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Natchez City Cemetery for family and friends with Lee Jones officiating.
Burial will follow under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.
Mr. Simonton was born Jan. 20, 1923, in Oklahoma City, Okla., the son of James Brady Simonton and Virginia White Simonton. He was a member of First Baptist Church. Mr. Simonton played saxophone in the Natchez High School Band and was a star football player. As a first lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, the airplane he piloted was shot down over Hamburg, Germany. For 13 months, he was in a prisoner of war camp in Stalag Luff on the North Sea. Mr. Simonton was presented a Purple Heart, an Air Medal and two presidential citations.
Mr. Simonton was an exceptional craftsman, most notably 18th century reproductions. His talents were appreciated throughout the country and his legacy will be cherished by many people who enjoy owning the furniture he made.
Mr. Simonton was blessed late in life with his grandson, Will. He took pleasure watching Will participate in athletics.
Mr. Simonton will live on in the hearts of many dear friends with whom he shared his love for life. He was sought after as a dancing partner to many Natchez belles, though his favorite was his wife, Bee.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Deane Jones Simonton; one son, Brady Montgomery Simonton; two brothers, Bob and Gerald; and two sisters, Delores Mallory and Betty Sue Newman.
Survivors include one daughter, Cynthia Simonton; one grandson, Will Simonton; one brother, Max Simonton and wife, Jean; and many nieces and nephews.
