NATCHEZ - A memorial service for Bethany Baker Ewald, a resident of Natchez for more than 60 years, who died peacefully at her home late Wednesday morning, Feb. 13, 2008, will be at 4 p.m. today at Trinity Episcopal Church.

Prior to moving to Natchez with her late husband, Karl Raymond Ewald Jr., Bette graduated from the University of Kansas and worked as a Braniff Airline stewardess based in Dallas from 1943-1947 before joining the Atlanta’s Rich’s Department Store as an interior designer. Up until her death, she continued working as a dedicated volunteer at the Natchez Children’s Home as a member of the altar guild at the Trinity Episcopal Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Survivors include one brother, Willis Everett Baker Jr. of Pleasanton, Kan.; one daughter, Bethany Ewald Bultman and husband, Ellis Johann, both of New Orleans and Provincetown, Mass.; one son, Karl Raymond Ewald III and wife, Margaret Rhodes Ewald, both of Houston; and four grandsons, Gwyther and Tristan Bultman, both of New York City and Karl IV and Andrew Ewald, both of Houston.
The family requests that memorials be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, 308 S. Commerce St., Natchez, MS 39120, the Natchez Children’s Home, 806 N. Union St., Natchez, MS 39120 and the New Orleans Musicians’ Assistance Foundation, 1525 Louisiana Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70115.

When I close my eyes I can see and hear Betty's ultimate southerness and grace. Some how, the hectic world outside never seemed to change her demeure softspoken wisdom.
Betty and I are the rare ones who persist on calling her daughter Bethany, "Betsy" . Betty always knew It was Kell when I'd call for Betsy!

From her chic ski parties in SnowMass to teas in Natchez, Betty will remain an example to all those who were lucky enough to learn and embrace her spirit.

Betty's wisdom and spirit lives on, through her wonderful family. My thoughts and deepest sympathies are offered up for them today , that they find consolement in fond memories.

A friend,
Kell Kelly Bennett
