What do you think about the current crime situation in the Miss-Lou?
January 14, 2008
Asked at Downtown Natchez
"People should be diligent and protect their property. The culprit behind such acts should find another way to channel their energy."
Roy Bonds, Postman, Downtown Natchez
"I think it has to do with Christmas. Everybody wants to get stuff for everybody. And there’s not enough employment. When I was in business in Baton Rouge shoplifting would always pick up around this time. People know hang out and case areas and so many people have a lot of stuff in cars and their homes during this time."
Steve Palmer , , Downtown Natchez
"For years the north side of town has had that reputation but now it has moved more into the south southern area (the Garden District). People have become relaxed and have felt immune to these issues."
Jim Pippen , Antique dealer , Downtown Natchez
"I’m from a different generation and we didn’t have crime like we do now. Our front door was unlocked all the time. I think it’s a sign of the times. I’m sure a lot of it has to do with drugs and involve younger people most of the time…people just don’t care like they used to."
Rhett Powell, Photographer, Downtown Natchez

everywhere you go there is always someone talking about crime.there will always be crime because noone enforces the law. cities know what crimes are important to them,as long as the cities refuse to punish criminals to the full extent of the law, there will always be crime, start punishing criminals and the crime rate will go down.dont fear criminals, put the fear of prisons into them.

Not snowed in...It seems to be missing us. This is my first winter here...i guess it is normal to be missed by the snow. I miss the snow.

What crime? Morticia just reported an unconfirmed hostage situation in Vidalia. This is from what she understands, involves a man and his family. Morticia is a step ahead of the media!

After reading this item, I checked out the "For the Record" section. Wow! I hope if I'm ever convicted of a crime, it happens in Natchez. The crimes of which people were reportedly convicted ranged from disturbing the peace to simple assault to domestic violence. Yet not a single one of the 37 convictions listed received any jail time that wasn't suspended or a fine higher than $592. Not much of a deterrent there. Sounds like if you want to commit a crime, Natchez is the place to be. Might as well just invite the criminals to come and stay awhile.

i agree with yousaywhat, all you hear is someone arrested for some crime and getting off with a fine and no jail.do you see the connection?its all about the money, they dont care about time in jail they just want you to pay in dollars.can anyone say corruption?

Seriously, What is the deal with the court system here?
Why are they so afraid to send people to jail?
Nothing will get better if the judges dont stop this, I just don't understand why they do the same sentencing time and time again.

CORRUPTION!
Posted by peacerulz (anonymous) on January 16, 2008 at 8:32 p.m.
crowded jails.
Posted by brod (anonymous) on January 16, 2008 at 9:55 p.m.
I think some of the people that are in jail, like it. They probably feel safer there, than out here with us.
Posted by luzichick (anonymous) on January 16, 2008 at 10:18 p.m.
They can't be that crowded, since they're not sending anyone there.

How can we complain????We keep electing the SAME Justice court Judges year after year....You know the good ole Natchez aristocrat boys!!!!!!

WHo cares if they have to sleep on the floor if they go to jail? You can stack them in there somehow... maybe just maybe if the JUDGES would put them in jail not caring if they were comfortable just maybe it would help...Couldn't hurt, I wouldn't think...

What's this "Ms-Lou" crime spree you speak of?
Haven't been any home invasions in Vidalia.
Maybe the shortage of police is finally paying what you would expect it to?

well last night I had four guys throwing rocks at my house. Busted my siding up real bad. Almost got a few windows. There are big size rocks around. I hear finger prints can be pulled of off a body, bet they can get them off of a smooth stone., BUT I didn't wait to confront these thugs I went out of my house with a pistol in my hand!!! I forgot to put a bullet in the chamber so it did not go off. This is the 3rd time in a year I have had this to happen. I am tired of it. Seems like the Adams County Sheriffs Department does not want to do not much about it, even though I am saying it is a HATE Crime. GAY man in a STRAIGHT man Neighborhood. I don't bother nobody, and keep to myself!!!

thetinman.....didn't you learn anything about the man in the news (CNN) who only witnessed his neighbors house being burglarized so he goes and shoots them both dead! IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT??? And to children? Rethink this man.

Haven't the people living in Natchez heard that the law changed last year? Now you can legally protect your home and family. Have you not heard of being "locked and loaded"? I do not live there now but am armed and would not hesitate to shoot if someone was in or trying to get into my house. It would only take a couple of incidences where the intruder got shot and all of that would cease ... immediately!!!

This problem started 25 years ago and will continue if the citizens of Mississippi will not support the death penalty through their juries, courts and judges. Parole hearings after serving 11 years of a so called life sentence for those who commit terrible murders during the course of a home or business robbery are not heard of in most states. In Mississippi it is a fact of life and the murderers know it. This travesty of legal justice to the victims and their surviving families is coming back to haunt you. Why do you not do something about it with your court system?

Notfromnatchez , just curious ; where are you from originally ? You can't compare the crime rate in Natchez to some super sized city . The crime rate is real to us Natchezians .
Posted by justinhughes (anonymous) on February 2, 2008 at 7:38 a.m.
Since the beginning of time there has been crime and it will continue until the end of time, I assure you. Control is the only influence we have over crime-through education, jobs and more police officers on duty to provide greater visibility in the community thus reducing crime.
