Patricia Wiley’s students at Ferriday Lower Elementary enjoy work stations daily. “Every child cannot learn in the same way,” Wiley said. “With differentiated instruction, the children have a much better chance for success. They utilized numerous centers, such as: computer, reading, writing, art and listening center. My students care about learning and they care about achieving on and beyond their intellectual ability.” The students studied high frequency word cards, and the teacher and students read aloud the story, “Where Do Pigs Play?” The teacher discussed the question mark at the end of the title. The students chorally read the title and each student was required to participate and read a passage aloud. Some students built new words with –ig and –it families. “The students moved from center to center with little or no loss of class time. Work stations are routine procedures for my students. They know the do’s and don’ts and sometimes, students help each other to remember classroom rules.
