I think all need to read this article carefully. It said should Mississippi raise taxes on cigarettes. Meaning it would be a state tax, not a local tax. Meaning it would be unlikely that the tax would see its way back directly to Ntz.

My father, my birthmother and my birthuncle have all died of lung cancer. I think anything and everything should be done to deter ( or at least make them hurt when buying em, just like they will hurt those they leave behind) smoking.
My father went from being the strongest man in the world in my eyes to someone who was weak and gasping for air his last moments on this earth. My birthmother whom I never met died one year before I found her. My birthsister took care of her for 3 months while she was bedridden and unable to do anything for herself. This is not a way to live OR die.
I say up the tax up the wazoo. The insurance companies are having to pay out millions to care for these people thus making all of our rates go up.
Rest in Peace Charles, Willie Mae and Algie.

What kills me is that everyone is down on Smokers! But I can sit in a Bar or a Rest. and smoke and not get in my car and drive home and kill someone but if you are DRINKING its a different story! People should be more worried about Drinkers than smokers

I've always thought the saying "taxation without representation" is a myth.

restaurants charge an extra tax paid only by people that eat at restaurants. if you do not want to pay this extra tax, quit eating at restaurants. if someone does not want to pay an alcohol tax, quit drinking. if you don't feel like paying more taxes on cigarettes, quit smoking.

Touche', silly_willy!!! Thanks for the comments...you have a way of hitting the nail on the head!
I smoke, so I am willing to pay an extra tax on cigs. I realize the dangers of smoking so I don't disrespect others by lighting up around them. And I don't expect the state to take care of me if I get sick...I know the danger. I wish people would follow silly_willy's suggestions. Don't B%$#$ if you gotta pay extra taxes...just don't purchase the items!

I smoke and I have no problem with upping the taxes on cigarettes. It'll give me one more reason to quit. (Which by the way I'm trying...)

One remarkable thing about these comments is how easily the Democrat has you all arguing about whether or not cigarettes should be taxed. Another remarkable thing is what a beautiful demonstration of the primary objection to pure democracy is, the objection to mob rule, three wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner.
Why does no one question whether the tax is needed or not? No mention has been made of what the tax revenue will be used for.
I hope most of you don't vote because you clearly have no sense of the principles of liberty the country was founded upon. Why give government more money to misuse? You live in a city where sixty two percent of the students are failing english. You live in a country that ranks about fiftieth in education worldwide. You live in a country that spends more per student than any other country. And most of you advocate more tax as long as you don't have to pay it, you don't care that what you get back is so substandard as to be absurd.
Don't you realize that every penny of tax is a restriction on someone's liberty? Do you realize that only one third of all government revenue comes from taxes?
God help us, because the people can't.

I am a smoker and I do not want to pay any extra taxes. Some people want to make smokers pay for every little thing through more taxes. I think if you raise taxes on bad habits it should be all bad habits. More people are affected by obesity than lung cancer lets tax fatty foods and fast food.Lets not stop there sugar is not good for you lets tax that along with chocolate and coffee. How about upping the taxes on gasoline even more, the exaust fumes are probally far more damaging than cigarettes. SUV owners are using extra gas to get back and forth why don't we raise the taxes on SUV's and other gas guzzling vehicles. What I'm getting at is its not fair to single out one group and say they should have to pay extra to keep them from hurting themselves or others, when everyone does something that negatively affects their health. Extra tax money = extra waste in government.

I'm sure that if you look into it, taxing people that don't smoke will bring in more money. GUY2CO, I get your point, but, I smoke, I'm fat, etc. I'll never be able to pay all those taxes. I'll have to go to the poor house and let the govt. pay the taxes for me.

csguidry: Back in the 1930's and 40's few people were yet aware of the dangers tobacco posed to their health, and a very significant portion of the population smoked. My Dad was born in 1926. Warnings did not go on labels until the 80's when companies were required to put one of four labels on the packages.
My Dad quit in the 1980's. I do not understand how anyone ( especially smokers)could sit and watch a person literally suffocate to death and still want to light up. This is just my opinion.
As far as the tax going up. What about the insurance that I pay going up to take care of those who choose to suffocate themselves to death? Should I be responsible? NO.

thelorax should I be responsible for the health problems of over eaters. Whether its smoking, obesity, or alcohol, we all do something that is bad for our health. Why should just the smokers pay?
