Hmmmm....... wonder what happened to those people that were making fun of the ones that bought extra batteries and water.......
Sure glad I had extras since I'm still without power! Better to be safe than sorry. I bought one extra case of water and one extra loaf of bread and made sure I had fresh batteries. I didn't go overboard, but glad I got more than I usually did. Just means i don't have to fight the crowd at the grocery store as soon as I normally would!

I'm getting a generator for the next one
I don't like hoarding gasoline, but that is what I would have been short on if things had been worse, it's dangerous keeping extra gas around the house, plus gas cans can gather condensation and you can ruin whatever you use that gas in if you're not careful
I'm figuring on 20-30 gallons with a generator and I ought to be good when the next one comes.

Good point supermom. You beat me to it, as I had been thinking the very same thing. I wondered how they faired that were on here bashing those of us who went and purchased water, canned foods that wouldn't need cooking, batteries, and filled-up our tanks just in case we needed to hit the road.
Btw, those solar lights that are out in your yard work swell inside at night to keep you from being in the pitch dark.
Posted by Peace007 (anonymous) on September 3, 2008 at 11:05 p.m. (Suggest removal)
At least we can agree on that Krogers. I was thinking the same thing, and almost went out looking for a generator yesterday, before I thought about there not being any gas for sale. Not too long ago, WalMart had a generator on sale and now I wish I had bought it.

Peace, I never would have thought of bringing in the solar lights. That is brilliant. You are one of those 1000 uses for duct tape people aren't you?

I was one that laughed at the guys joke...but I retracted my giggle BEFORE the storm hit.
He was funny, but I do see why people did what they did.
We were stocked fine, because like him, I keep plenty of bottled water, cokes and canned food anyway.
I also keep charcole because we grill alot.
Also, I am a candle nut , so I had lots of Trapp candles, Tyler candles, the house smelled great and we had plenty to eat!
HOWEVER, I was miserable with the heat, but nothing would prevent that!

I fired back at the guy about special needs people who actually cannot do without all the extras. We stay pretty stocked, but did make sure we bought extra water and gas. The generator is a necessity all the time, but came in especially wonderful with the power out for an extended period. We can run all his survival equipment including a window unit and the fridge. When it gets too hot elsewhere in the house, you give him a long visit. Everyone takes their turn to chill, so he is never alone!
Krogers, we rotate the gas in our cans on a regular basis with the lawnmowers and if we feel they are aging, we use them up in the vehicles and replace with fresh. We just make sure all cans are filled if a storm is eminent.

The one's that were saying all of us were crazy were preparing for the storm that it wasn't going to be bad here are the ones that are too busy waiting in those lines. They don't have the time to get online and vote here.
I know it has been rough but I am glad that for the most part everyone is ok. I have been hearing how the heat is getting to some people but the power companies are awesome. I will be so glad to get back to normal...slowly but surely.

I promise I tried to stock up but was laughed at and told we had plenty. I asked my sweetie if we had everything we needed ONE MORE TIME and he said not to sweat it. Well, as we were sweating in the heat, we ran out of cigarettes, ice, etc. AND I TRIED TO PREPARE AND HE TOLD ME NO!!!!
I love "I told you so"!

I don't know about the rest of you, but, the wind was blowing in my neighborhood!!! I didn't get hot because I opened the doors and let the breeze blow through. I know that some of those with medical problems have to have AC and I sympathize with them and their discomfort. As long as the water and gas are on, I can remain comfortable... I can bathe in hot water and cook the food as it thaws. I did not have much in the freezer to loose. I feel very fortunate to have weather the storm so free of problems. Actually, I felt like my peace and quiet were infringed upon when the television came back on again... guess I need to use the off switch more often!

One other thing I plan to purchase prior to the next storm, window screens. The only screen on my whole house is on the storm door, but I did open my windows like itsmemame and let the breeze blow thru. I had forgotten how damp a house can get with the windows open. Even though our water heater is electric, we did not run out of hot water...but another day without electricity, we would have. It's great that our electricity was gotten back on in a timely manner, as some folks are still without power. Having lived in Pascagoula, I remember past storms and longer days without power and water, but this is the longest I remember ever been without power in Natchez.

emp, as a matter of fact, I can't take the credit, but I have seen duct tape being used as a bra underneath a prom dress. I wasn't the genius who came up with the solar lights during a blackout idea, I had read about it on the internet years ago...and it may very well have been on 100thingstodowithducttape.com, lol. But my genius husband is who remembered to bring the solar lights inside during this storm.

Spitbaths after the storm?
We all know how children will often immulate their mothers, and so it seems that while her mommy was bashing Obama during the RNC I accept the vp nomination, lil Piper happily demonstrates how Palin has been able to juggle being both mother and govenor (spitbaths for the kiddos).

Peace, why are you talking about Palin on this article? You are always the one who starts the political disputes (finds anything possible that may be negative toward republicans). Do you really know any Alaskans personally to personify that statement? Many people are also furious about all the lies good ole Barack dreams about. How many politicians have promised high achievements for the US and how many actually made everyone happy?

We didn't think anything of it so we weren't prepared. In fact, I tried to go to Wal-mart Monday evening to get some groceries but they were closed. Luckily McDonalds was open so I was able to get dinner :)
My husband stood in line for three hours to get a generator at Stines and luckily his friend had gas we could have. We had no cash so had to buy some from my sister in law. Luckily there was a gas station open so we were able to get some adult beverages.
Overall...lesson learned. We will be prepared for the next one.
BTW someone told me FEMA will reimburse you on your generator, I'm going to try it.

Georgia man imprisoned for teen sexual encounter freed by court decision
FORSYTH, Ga. (CNN) -- Genarlow Wilson, imprisoned for more than two years for having oral sex with a 15-year-old girl when he was 17, was released from prison Friday evening after the Georgia Supreme Court ruled his 10-year sentence amounted to cruel and unusual punishment.
A smiling Wilson walked out of the Burrus Correctional Training Center in Forsyth about 5:30 p.m. and hugged his mother and 9-year-old sister.
Wilson, 21, said he was looking forward to spending time with his family and plans to enroll in college to study sociology. To supporters who rallied around him and campaigned for his release, he said, "You will not be disappointed."
Wilson also said he doesn't regret rejecting a plea offer that could have freed him from prison months ago -- but would have required him to register as a sex offender. (Posted 6:45 p.m.)

Like many of you, I was made fun of last week. After experiencing Katrina, you would think people would have been better prepared for Gustav. But it's amazing how quickly people forget. Anyone with any sense went and put gas in the car (and cans if necessary), bought extra food, water, batteries, etc., if for no other reason than the fact that we had thousands of evacuees coming through the area, which created a bigger demand for these items. I did these things and have not had to go to the store (and fight the lines) for anything so far. The only problem we had was the heat and now the need to re-stock the fridge. Think I will invest in one before "next time".
But I'm the one laughing now as I drive by and see the lines at the gas stations and grocery stores.

I did laugh at the person that wrote about the sandbags,
but ...as I said, we always have a weeks worth of food and drinks on hand.
So, we are still doing fine.
I filled my car up last Friday and I still have over a half a tank!
About the windows, the breeze was blowing, but it wasnt cold enough to handle my hot flashes---so I slept in my car with the air on! I would crank it for about an hour, get it FREEZING, then sleep a bit and repeat the process.

obamayama, I do know some Alaskans personally, but you might prefer to read what this Alaskan woman whom personally knows Sarah Palin has to say:
Everyone is trying to get the measure of Sarah Palin, the woman who was rocketed from small-state obscurity to the national stage when John McCain selected her as his running-mate on the 2008 Republican ticket.
Republican senators and governors are admitting interviews, as former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, R-Mississippi, did with me a few minutes ago that: "Most of us don't really know her personally."
Well, Anne Kilkenny does know Sarah Palin. http://www.thenation.com/blogs/campaignm...

Peace, you talk about the republicans putting down Obama when all you do is try to find the GOP's dirty laundry. I would say that makes you a HYPOCRIT! You put down Palin for her many children, but how can you put down Cindy McCain for adapting a foreign child from Mother Theresa almost 20 years ago? Oh wait, I know your reasoning, she knew that in the year 2008, her good cause would contribute to her husband getting elected as president. Now get out of here with that nonsense. Barack Obama doesn't have a chance. Keep dreaming just as he does. IT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!

I'm not making fun of anyone for overstocking because I could have done a better job, but I have a question: Why do people buy so much bottled water when they can just fill up containers from their faucet to prepare?
Posted by Peace007 (anonymous) on September 5, 2008 at 1:06 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Let me just clear this up for you obamayama...I did not put down Palin for having 5 kids. I could have 5 kids too. I did not put down Cindy McCain for adopting an orphan, or say that she did it to win an election. I think all of the kids are cute, especially the adopted orphan. My problem with Cindy is that she took advantage of her situation by stealing drugs and wasn't prosecuted for that even though she had prescriptions written and filled in other peoples' names. What I said about the kids was...it was going to cost a fortune to provide secret service for all of those kids. And the reason I said that is because...not long ago on here someone said that at McCain's age, if he should get elected, he probably won't live long enough to run again, so that should save on providing secret service for him after he is no longer president, like we do for so many of the other ex-presidents and their wives...I'm not sure about secret service for the kids after they leave the White House.
Please tell me what you think we should do...should we just vote for someone because they are running, or should we search and find out what is printed about them? I was offering to inform you of the information that I had found online. Never did I say you had to agree with the information. But, there are certainly enough on here who do support McCain and are offering false information about Obama. Someone should keep it fair.
What I question about Palin is her judgement in running so soon after having a new baby and when she knew her teenage daughter was pregnant and would be the brunt of many jokes. I question her judgement in taking that new baby to the convention and exposing it to all those air-born germs. I question her judgement in getting on an airplane when she was nine months pregnant to attend a governors convention in Texas, and then staying after her water broke to give a 30 minute speech, and then getting back on an airplane to Alaska so that her baby would be born in her state instead of Texas. I do not have any problem with her having kids. While I did admire her selling the jet, I do not admire her for accepting almost half a million less than it was worth and I see no money savings there. I do not admire her attempt to censor the books available at the local library. If McCain is elected and should he for some reason no longer be able to continue as president...she will be the president of the United States. I think you should want to find out every thing you can about her and him before casting your vote.

luckiestgirl, sometimes the water goes out just like the electricity after a hurricane, or if the generators at the water plant aren't functioning, you might have to boil the water coming from your faucet.

obamayamama, did you know that when Palin's mother in law ran for Mayor, Palin wouldn't endorse her, but instead endorsed the person running against her? Why should we accept Palin, just because McCain picked her, when she didn't feel compelled to vote for her own mother in law?
John McCain may very well become President, but it won't be because you were on here insulting Obama and the people who do like him. BTW, I think Cindy McCain is very pretty and does some very good and helpful things, but it bothers me that she doesn't acknowledge her own sisters and tells the world that she is an only child. How can I trust her to care about all of the people of the United States when she ignores her own family and behaves as if they dont exist? I don't know the circumstances, but the one sister said, at this point, she just wanted to be acknowledged as a sister and child of her father. She looked decent enough in her picture and maybe she would even be a good friend. The kids are certainly missing out on having cousins.
I myself have two sets of kids who are half brothers and sisters...if I were to die and leave hundreds of millions of dollars, I would hope my kids would stay a family and share all of that wealth, which distributed evenly, would still be a lot of money each. Of course that won't ever happen to my kids, because I don't have any money, lol. I'm sorry if I appear to be a hypocrite. Mostly, I just hate knowing that US bombs have destroyed innocent children that didn't have one thing to do with 9/11.
Posted by obamayamama (anonymous) on September 5, 2008 at 1:49 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Peace: It is ashamed that you can't realize that maybe those bombs have to do with your freedom and safety in this country. What a shame.
As for Palin's mother in law, all I can say is that I RELATE to that. I have the most evil step monster anyone could imagine. And she just as well could have been a mother-in-law.
And as for Cindy's siblings, they are her HALF-brother and HALF-sister. And if she was raised without them in her life, then she has a ligitimate reason for claiming to be a single child. People are crazy, especially when money and stardom are involved. You must be obsessed with gossip. All you do is find out the dirty on these people then throw it our way. I am not even going to waste my time trying to find something on Barack, Michelle, or Joe.
It really doesn't matter. Weren't you the one on here the other day saying how much she hates to shake people's hands? I bet you freaked when you saw that she actually has done some good for humanity. What could you find out about her that would make her look disgusting? Oh, now it the whole only child thing. What's next? Cindy McCain doesn't wash her hands after using the bathroom?
Not all families are perfect. And like I said before, SHE IS NOT THE ONE WHO IS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT so it shouldn't matter.

If we were gonna attack them to get rid of Saddam and to free the Iraqi, then that's what we should have been told at the time! If the lies are ok with you then that's ok for you. I still don't like the thought of all those innocent lives being lost because of US bombs. I don't like the thought of all those US soldiers lives being lost because of lies.

Peace, PLEASE go and do some research as to why we went to Iraq. I really do not feel like explaining to you why the US went after Saddam and his weapons of mass destruction, stockpiles of anthrax and other chemical agents, and how he was backing Al Qaeda. We removed Hussein so that Iraq could start a democratic society, WHICH THEY HAVE DONE.
You know, if you like the thought of US soldiers lives being lost, does that mean that completely ignore the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, and the Korean War? If you don't agree with what has made causes have been fought to make this country so great, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!
You must be a woman that lives in a bubble and thinks that everything on this earth consist of peace, love, and happiness. WAKE UP!!!! If we would not have asserted our power, terrorism would come to us more and more.
