Lott-less
Published Monday, November 26, 2007
It doesn't take a pessimist to be a little worried about how Trent Lott's resignation will affect Adams County.
Just read the article in Tuesday's edition quoting our local elected officials. They all seem a little down.
Darryl Grennell and other county supervisors and city leaders have built a relationship with Lott. They've told him about Rentech, told him about how much IP hurt. Lott not only knows where Adams County is, he knows we need money. And he's been good to our county.
But now local leaders will have to start all over training a new politician to remember the southwest corner of Mississippi.
It can be done, and it will be done.
But Lott's decision to step down is a blow to our area.
Wonder what he's going to do next. Any ideas?

Some speculation is that he will be the President of USM.
i still couldn't see myself at 66 taking on anything new but maybe a sky diving lesson or scuba lesson! haha!
Could this be a reason to resign now: "A law kicks in on January 1 that forbids lawmakers from lobbying for two years after leaving office. Those who leave by the end of 2007 are covered by the previous law, which demands a wait of only one year."
The needs of our county should still get some attention if Chip Pickering is appointed to replace Sen. Lott. I also think if Sen. Lott does become a lobbyist, he will try to look out for Mississippi as he does his new job.
Maybe it is because Washington has run out of money.
I don't think it is the USM presidency being tossed around, it may be Ole Miss. Robert Khayat, the current chancellor may be looking at retirement. USM's new president was recently instated.
BYE BYE TRENT, TAKE THAD WITH YOU
NOV 26:
Sen. Trent Lott of Mississippi, the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, will announce his resignation effective this year, FOX News has learned.
Lott, 66, was re-elected in 2006 amid speculation that he would retire. Instead, against his wife Tricia’s wishes, he ran again, regaining a Senate leadership position after being forced from the top Republican seat in 2002, following remarks he made that were seen as racially insensitive.
Lott, who is serving his fourth Senate term, was expected to discuss his plans later Monday.
CRAWFISH NOTE: These two former Ole Miss cheerleaders talked just enough conservatism to get elected but had NO big ideas or new ideas and always managed to RUN when the liberal heat got bad. Neither impressed me the 27 years I spent as a Mississippi resident… two more get-a-longs with little spine and less vision. You get a teeny, tiny thanks.
Ya’ll “coulda been contenders”, “could have been somebody”… but became just two more congressional royalty remembered for almost zero achievement. Thanks a yahoo.

Lott has been a reasonably conservative politician, but he is an old-style Republican who has never been comfortable with the transparency that today’s Republicans expect from their leaders. Lott tended to be more loyal to his fellow Senators, Republicans and Democrats alike, than to principle.
I assume Lott’s seat will stay in Republican hands, and whoever replaces Lott–Haley Barbour, perhaps?–will likely be a stronger and more consistent conservative…..

MERRY CHRISTMAS: LOTT’S LEAVING
“(T)here’s ample reason for conservatives to view Mr. Lott’s retirement as an early Christmas present.
“Though a strong supporter of tax cuts and the military, he also frequently behaved as a typical Congressional pork barreler during his the 34-year career. Just this month, he voted with 78 other senators to override a presidential veto of a $23 billion water-projects bill loaded up with 900 pork barrel projects. Mr. Lott, who presumably knew he didn’t have to worry about reelection, still couldn’t resist the urge to shovel money back home to make his contributors and lobbyist friends grateful.
“…(H)is departure means one fewer Republican remnant hanging in the way of building the party’s future. Principled conservatives will have one fewer incumbent to apologize for. There’s also little chance Democrats will capture Mr. Lott’s seat in 2008, so, on the whole, his departure is a reason for conservative satisfaction.”

Look at the AP headline about the lawyer indicted. Maybe this had something to do with his decision.
Please don't wish Lott upon USM!! Let him go to his alma mater, Ole Miss, where he was a cheerleader. If you want to read the gossip columns, he's leaving because of the threat of explosive allegations regarding his personal life. But in this day and age, nothing politicians do surprises me anymore and furthermore, who cares? Good riddance!
