Crews work to bring three sunken barges back to surface

Published Tuesday, October 2, 2007

VIDALIA — The large barge with a crane hanging out just south of the Mississippi River Bridge is part of a salvage project to resurrect three sunken barges from their watery resting places.

The barges sank in late January after they struck the bridge’s pilings during high water.

The first step salvage crews will have to take is to remove the remaining cargo from the barges, surveyor Peter Diaz said.

Diver Brian Goldwater, James Canavan, Brock Stewart, surveyor Peter Diaz, and Steven McKinney anchor their barges together Monday afternoon. Budwine and Associates and River Services are working to remove sunken barges from the river.

Diaz is with Budwine and Associates, one of the firms working on the salvage project.

The cargo the barges were carrying was small pieces of granite, Diaz said.

“It’s rock like you would find in your driveway, little pieces chopped to the size of an inch, maybe an inch-and-a-half,” he said.

Once the rock is removed, recovery crews will try to pump water out of the barges’ tanks and lift them with a large A-frame crane on the salvage barge, Diaz said.

Divers will cut holes in the barges, pass chains through them and patch any holes as they survey the barges to see what kind of damage has been done to them, Diaz said.

One of the barges will likely come up in two pieces, he said.

The crew will probably move to a submerged barge directly under the bridge today, Diaz said.

“That one will likely be the easiest to raise,” he said.

Even though another salvage barge is slated to join in the recovery effort in the near future, the process will still be a slow one, Diaz said.

“Without any problems, this project will take about two months,” he said.

Did anyone happen to notice that NONE of these men are wearing life jackets. Shouldn't that be required when working on the river.

Posted by mwhittington (anonymous) on October 2, 2007 at 11:24 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I would assume, being professionals in their fields, they would know what is required.

Posted by truck0724 (anonymous) on October 2, 2007 at 11:42 a.m. (Suggest removal)

does anybody know exactly how deep the river is in Natchez?

Posted by mommyof3 (anonymous) on October 2, 2007 at 11:45 a.m. (Suggest removal)

You would think that dealing with sunken boats they would take some kind of precautions to protect themselves.

Posted by jammin1 (anonymous) on October 2, 2007 at 12:17 p.m. (Suggest removal)

You can bet that if any of us were on that river without a life vest we would get a citation. And didn't a man fall or get knocked off of a barge in the not too distant past and drowned? Budwine must have some really good ins.

Posted by jammin1 (anonymous) on October 2, 2007 at 12:19 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Oh and it's not how deep the river is that kills you. It's how swift the current is, that pulls you down.

Posted by freedom42 (anonymous) on October 2, 2007 at 12:34 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Right where they are working, at this time, the river is only a few feet deep and very slow moving. It's not like they were in the middle of the channel which is currently 31 feet and very fast. I have stopped to watch them several times in the past few days while walking on the Riverfront.

Posted by mommyof3 (anonymous) on October 2, 2007 at 12:45 p.m. (Suggest removal)

It doesn't matter how deep the river is. Safety is safety. The democrat shouldn't even publish these pictures. My children see this and have already asked "Why aren't they wearing life jackets? You said anybody in a boat has to.".

This is a major company they need to follow proper safety guidelines.

Posted by mwhittington (anonymous) on October 2, 2007 at 1:15 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Well. There is ONE guy in a wet suit.... may be sorta hard for him to dive and go under water, with a life jacket...

Posted by mommyof3 (anonymous) on October 2, 2007 at 1:29 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I am aware of that. It wouldn't be too funny if we logged on to the paper tomorrow to find that one of those men died from drowning. Now would it?

Posted by BigPapa (anonymous) on October 2, 2007 at 2:24 p.m. (Suggest removal)

yes, these men probably should be wearing life jackets. anyone ever tried working in a life jacket, though? can't imagine it would be too easy. all i've even done while wearing a life jacket is sit on my behind in a boat...

amen

Posted by freedom42 (anonymous) on October 2, 2007 at 4:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)

No, it really wouldn't be funny. But the diver has on a Bouancy Compensator (BC) which he can inflate if needed.

Posted by jmcan1279 (anonymous) on October 2, 2007 at 7:10 p.m. (Suggest removal)

For those of you so concern that they are not wearing a life vest, just be thankful they are cleaning the Mississippi for you. They have trained for years and KNOW exactly what they are doing. So kiss your lucky stars thay are cleaing up so you can have a river you can enjoy.

Most of you have NO CLUE what they are doing or understand their work. So before you crticize their work GO play Donkey Basketball and get over it.

Love,

Mom

From another Mom, These guys are not required to wear life jackets, but they have them in their possesion, as every other person on the water in a boat is required to have. If I am not mistaken, and my children are grown, every child under the age of 12 is required to have their life jacket on if they are in a boat on the water. These guys work very long hours and some of their work can be very dangerous. They have to be ready to go all the time as they often respond to Emergency Calls. I agree with jmcan1279 in saying before you criticize their work, GO play Donkey Basketball and get over it.

Love, Mom

No one was being critical of the work they are doing. Don't put words in my mouth. I think you need to read those comments again. I was critical of the lack of safety precautions being taken. Hey, what so I know I thought the Donkey Basketball was great because the money was raised for cancer research. Excuse the poop out of me for having an opinion.

Posted by jmcan1279 (anonymous) on October 3, 2007 at 9:01 a.m. (Suggest removal)

There is NO lack of safety precautions on there behalf. Oh by the way I'm happy for the Donkey Basketball for cancer, BUT were they wearing safety equipment. I think NOT.
So I will excuse the poop out of you since you have NO clue what you are talking about.

When you're children are grown we must have another discussion.

As a matter of fact they teams playing Donkey basketball were wearing helmets last night.

Maybe it is YOU who has no clue what they are talking about.

I'm done here.

Posted by canavan27 (anonymous) on October 3, 2007 at 10 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Most normal people would not have a clue about donkey basketball. which goes to show you that you know nothing about the job that those guys do... just like i or jmcan1279 knows about donkey basket ball. so before you comment on another subject in the paper MAKE SURE you know what you are talking about!!!

Posted by capndaveman (anonymous) on October 3, 2007 at 10:09 a.m. (Suggest removal)

As Safety Director for a Marine Towing Company on the Mississippi River, I can assure you that the individuals in this picture are in violation of Safety Rules requiring the use of a work vest (PFD), and would be subject to disciplinary action, including termination of employment.
THERE IS NO EXCUSE AND NO REASON FOR FAILURE TO WEAR A WORK VEST whenever there is a danger of falling overboard. These individuals are the exception, not the rule, and I would hesitate to call them "highly trained professionals" who know what they're doing.

Posted by mommyof3 (anonymous) on October 3, 2007 at 10:28 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Thank you capndaveman!

Posted by canavan27 (anonymous) on October 3, 2007 at 10:32 a.m. (Suggest removal)

you said it towing not diving!!!!

Posted by jmcan1279 (anonymous) on October 3, 2007 at 10:35 a.m. (Suggest removal)

These are the exception and I will CALL them "HIGHLY TRAINED PROFESSIONALS." They are well aware of the danger.
They don't TOW they DIVE and have all of the necessary equipment to do do their job safely and effectively.

Posted by mommyof3 (anonymous) on October 3, 2007 at 10:41 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I never said the diver should be wearing a life jacket. Only the workers who are walking around the barge looking over the edge.

Don't tell me I don't know what I am talking about. I went and watched the event last night because it was for a good cause. Get off of my back. I stated my opinion you DO NOT have to like.

Get over yourself you are Not the only human on earth with an opinion.

My only salvation is in fact that I am RIGHT! I also apparently KNOW what I am talking about.

We all know I am good at raising CANE!! (for fear of being deleted! HAHA!)

Posted by capndaveman (anonymous) on October 3, 2007 at 11:59 a.m. (Suggest removal)

"Diving" by definition refers to UNDERWATER activity. There is not "diving" going on in this picture. These guys are standing on a barge and are required to be wearing work vests. And if they are highly trained, and "know what they are doing", they would know the leading cause of injury to river employees is falling overboard, and by far the leading cause of death is by drowning. The best way to get the odds back in your favor is by wearing a properly fitted, properly secured work vest. They may know what they are doing, but they don't show it in this picture.

its a shame that the only thing that mommyof3 can do in her lonely life is to sit on the computer and complaine about other people who are living there lives and working, who also said after 9.15 am that she was done.. go make a bottle, change a daiper and whatch your soaps. or get a life that is not spent on line all day......

Posted by mommyof3 (anonymous) on October 3, 2007 at 12:28 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I don't have to make a bottle or change diapers! My children are potty trained. It is sad that all you have to do all day is sit here and complain about my OPINIONS!!

You do NOT have any room to talk about sitting here posting comments b/c if that is the case then you are just as lonely as I am. By the way, I have a job. What about you? Why are you online posting comments? Are you lonely?

Come off of it. Get a life and let people have their opinions. I won't comment on you and you can stop commenting on me and the world will be a happy place.
If you feel the need to reply to this goody for you. I am not going to argue with you over anything. Just learn to respect others opinions because they are like poopholes, everybody has one.

Posted by mwhittington (anonymous) on October 3, 2007 at 12:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I think I started a trend.... with the "poop" word, and you are so correct mommyof3... for someone who knows "everything" THEIR grammer is very lacking...

Posted by buttercup26 (anonymous) on October 3, 2007 at 12:53 p.m. (Suggest removal)

oh my comment going to be sooo deleted after today.. GRR!! haha!

but seriously why are they even worrying about the barges that sunk? i thought things like that made good 'homes' for fish and such? or is it due to the currents that they are afraid will knock the sunken barges loose in time and cause them to hit the bridge? hmm... i think i answered my own silly question... haha!

Posted by mwhittington (anonymous) on October 3, 2007 at 12:53 p.m. (Suggest removal)

We got your back, girl. NOW, can somebody please tell me why they call it "Donkey Basketball"?

Let those men come to my job without proper safety gear. They would be escorted off of the premises.

How's that for knowing what in the THUNDER I am talking about?

Donkey basketball has been around for years. We use to have them in high school once a year to raise money for different things.

It is very entertaining...Always loved to see the donkey get the best of a teacher or principal. We had someone with pooper scooper...LOL
