Ferriday High School principal arrested
Published Monday, November 19, 2007
NATCHEZ — Ferriday High School Principal Michelle Bethea was arrested in Natchez Saturday on old charges of false pretense.
Bethea, stopped for a traffic violation, was found to have an outstanding warrant issued in 1996. Bethea reportedly wrote two bad checks in 1995. One check was for $55, the other was for $28.16, Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins said.
Bethea, 41, has been principal at Ferriday High since the summer of 2006. She lives in Clayton.
She was released Saturday night on $963 bond.
Acting Superintendent Loretta Blankenstein said Sunday night that she has not heard the news and did not yet have a comment.

Can you say Statute of Limitations. Well I'll give Ferriday this much, They are doing their job. Sure bet they didn't count on catching the high school principle though.

This can happen. On my way to Baton Rouge on Hwy 38, I was stopped for speeding years ago and the LA state trooper ran my license. I had an outstanding warrant for my arrest. It was like 5 years old !! The ONLY reason he let me go, was I had my 2 year old daughter with me at the time. He said I had better take care of it. Talk about bad luck... Right before I got in BR, I was stopped AGAIN and he wasn't going to let me go. I had to beg and explain, that I had just found out about it earlier and had to show him my speeding ticket to prove it. Come to find out, my suppose to be brother in law was a deputy for sheriffs office and instead of telling me about it, he threw it in his floor board and never thought about it again. He laughed his butt off when I called and told him about it. I didn't think it was so funny. The warrant was for no insurance. I was young and had to let my car go back. I didn't know, I was suppose to take off the tag and tell them I didn't own it anymore.
Long story, but true.

Probably a simple mistake that happened over a decade ago. She probably did not even know that checks were bad. Happened to me when banks changed ownership ( Magnolia Federal to Union Planters to Britton and Koontz all in the same year or so. This would not have made the news if this was the principal of VHS. Can anybody say TABLOID !!! Keep selling papers and destroying lives of good people Julie. Hope you sleep good at night. Remember what goes around comes around. A decade old rubber check for less than $100 is not worthy of front page news !!!

sorry, revolutionary, it comes with the territory. Just as we hold politicians to a higher standard, everyone involved with our kids are especially held accountable. When she was made principal, there should have been a new background check made, and this charge would have been found in system.
A little background on bad checks in Mississippi. Before you can turn them over to the DA, you have to send out certified letters to the writer of the check. If she had furnished a proper address, she would have been notified prior to the DA being brought into the mix. His office also sends out letters giving them a chance to pay up. Only then are proper charges filed.

I think revolutionary doesn't like our friend Julie F. Why "kill the mesenger"? She is doing her job, and a good one at that, revolutionary. Would you want her to be biased and not print this story? Make up your mind, friend, and go have yourself a wonderful Monday! And happy turkey day!!!!!

Was this warrent issued before she became principal? Hope they do a background check befor they hire or promote in the school system. Can't be too careful when dealing with the children. Sure this is minor but if they have no way and means to insure the employees don't have any criminal record, then you never know what might be out there.

This may have been a decade ago, but I'll bet this
lady hasn't forgotton those hot checks. Just felt
she had gotton away with it. She deserved to be caught, and thanks Democrat. This woman should have
done a better job of protecting her own reputation.

they need to give her some time off and get a new principal.

JunkyardDawg, you may be right. However, I would think that a fine of $963 and the public humiliation is enough.
Maybe, an in-depth background check to see if there is something else.

She was released on a bond of $963.00. No fine &etc.

Yes, I know she was released on a $963 bond. I figure the bond was probably close to the fine amount. I maybe wrong.

That's a pretty hefty sum for $83.16 in bad checks.... and a very hard lesson..... to lose your job over that amount.... BUT if you do the crime you should have to suffer the consequences...... sorry... : (

You're right truth, but i don't think that if this is her only offense that she should lose her job.

cutt'er sum slack y'all, regardless of if u know it or not, EVERYONE has written a hot check or two in their lifetime (AND IT'S NOT NEWS WORTHY); most just happen to have a little thing called "overdraft coverage," especially for the little amounts tht she wrote for.

NOT everyone has written a hot check... sorry to disagree. I agree it perhaps shouldn't of been news, so maybe she could of straightened it all out and gotten it cleared up without everyone watching..... to see what happens....

Maybe ur not old enuff to hve learned tht lesson yet!

would that even show up on a background check? it's not a felony under $500.00.
Posted by DUCKHUNTER (anonymous) on November 19, 2007 at 7:38 p.m. (Suggest removal)
my point exactly. i had a mark against my DL and it didn't show up against me until 2 years l8r when i was in an accident. i didn't know it was there, but the state "said" it was. turned out to be nothin but a "failure to look far enough back in the records 'human' error."
in my case, no damage was done. in this case, b/c she is who she is, there is untold damage to be done. y, b/c of eight some odd dollars in checks.

CPSO does the background checks for the school board, they take your fingerprints, sign the form and you are out of there, the whole process takes less than 5 minutes, if it isn't in the parish data base then they(CPSO) doesn't want to know about it

I do not think anyone is maliciously pointing a finger at her. She was stopped for a traffic violation and was found to have these outstanding checks. Her position made it newsworthy.

Stuff like this bothers me because people in education have done way worse or have even been caught doing inappropriate things while serving our children - and they keep their job. She is an excellent principal and I hope this does not effect her career. It was so long ago and for such a small amount - come on now - it is not a felony.

Anyone can make a simple mistake and write "bad checks." Once, a company mischarged my debit card for double the correct amount, and as a result, two checks I had written that would have been debited correctly bounced. The company did not correct their mistake, but luckily my bank took off the overdraft charges and it was fine. For all you people know, the same thing happened to her. NORMAL people make mistakes in check registers. Even ACCOUNTANTS switch numbers sometimes. OH MY GOD SOMEONE BOUNCED THEIR ACCOUNT. TWICE. FOR LESS THAN EIGHT DOLLARS COMBINED. People float checks for more than that every day and get away with it. SO WHAT?
Posted by srob (anonymous) on November 19, 2007 at 9:58 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Thats all the FHS kids need is a reason to not listen to their principal. Now when she cites them for disobeying the rules they will disobey even more and say that SHE'S a criminal too. Way to go cops. Let's see how the students there act now that you've called their principal a criminal for something so trivial. Bravo.

If she has been fired, that's just plain old rediculous! If this woman had a history of violent crimes, sexual offenses, etc, then I could understand the hoopla surrounding her losing her job, with the education system. Having a fine on a bad check is NOT. People forget, Natchez had an alderman who had way more in bad checks uncovered and what was done? How is it that we are so holier than thou, but yet at the same time, if someone was to place a spotlight and a magnifying glass on our lives, we would all scatter from the shame of it all. Words to the high and mighty, the only difference between her and some of us is, she got caught.

I don’t know who the checks were written out to, but if it was me….I would have walked into the place of business and handed them in cash the $55.00 and $28.16 PLUS the bank charges for nsf check as soon as I realized the checks bounced. If I really didn’t have the cash to do that at the time, I would still walk in, apologize, and promise to pay as soon as a got my next pay check. Then, I would do it. That is what any person who made an honest mistake would do, isn’t it. Or is that just me?

I don't believe someone could forget writing 2 bad checks, surely not someone who considers themself a professional. She apparently thought she was above the law. But why shouldn't she? So many others in high positions feel that way.

We should all pray that things have calmed down by next week when this principal and her staff return to work, so that they can continue to provide a safe and productive learning environment for the students that they serve. Ultimately, isn't it suppose to be all about the students. LET GO AND LET GOD!

It's quite an unfortunate situation. Hopefully, she will not lose her job behind it. Whatever the circumstances were to result in bounced checks and her failure to make them good, I'm sure she, AND OTHERS, are learning from this "oversight" because it can, and will, come back to bite you in the butt!!!
After publication of this story, I bet you Ferriday, Vidalia and Natchez will be seeing a lot of folks showing up to pay old fines for "hot" checks, traffic offenses and outstanding warrants.
Maybe they'll collect enough money to hire one more police officer.

I agree w/ citizen. This is not about someone just bouncing a check. This is about someone who bounced a check and didn't take care of her business. Most people have bounced checks, but most people will take care of a bounced check immediately. I run a business and I have the ones that bounce checks and will call appologizing and bring cash immediately, and we don't charge an extra fee except what we were charged. Then I have the ones that I never here from again, which this seems to be the case here. As far as I am concerned, that person has just stolen from me. If you are any kind of responsible person then their is no way that this could have slipped your mind. Some of you act as though this is no big deal and this happened a long time ago and shouldn't matter. I tell you, the more I read the post of my fellow citizens the more disappointed I become. We have become a society that doesn't want to hold people accountable and prosecute people who are trying to help. I'm confused! These are probably the same people that the school system are having problems with their kids. No discipline.

I wonder where were the autorities when the checks went unpaid for so long? Don't they serve you with a warrant or keep coming after you until you pay up? Why was this allowed to get OVER a decade old? I am sure it was easy to find her, at home, if they really wanted to arrest her.
Posted by thetruthhurts (anonymous) on November 20, 2007 at 9:23 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I agree. I also am in a position that bad check writers are not "just something everybody does". Thank you for stating your opinion from the "other" side!!!
Posted by thetruthhurts (anonymous) on November 20, 2007 at 9:41 a.m. (Suggest removal)
You can have a warrant out for you and not even know it... they hand you a legal pad at the sherriff's office to fill out the "incident". If you get stopped for a traffic violation, they arrest you. (they don't go looking for you) and then it's up to YOU to prove your innocence.

citizen--No, you aren't the only one. I would address
this issue EXACTLY as you. Folks, I'm not holier than
thou but an nsf check in any amount is a big deal to
me. I don't want to luck-up and get away without pay-
ing my debts, I want them paid. Do I think this lady
will or should lose her job, absolutely not, but this
wrong should be rectified. The fact that many people
have done worse doesn't matter. We are responsible for ourselves, and moral decay has to start somewhere
And we all know how destructive it can be.

Outstanding checks are a part of your bank reconcilement until you adjust your check book.
Of course, you could contact the payee and try to come to some resolution.

No, I would not carry a check on my bank reconcilement for 11 years.
However, I would try to find out why the check had not cleared the bank. The bank may be able to tell me something and as I said above, I would contact the payee.

HELLO.... the checks tried to clear the bank.... they were returned. There are notices that one receives from the BANK when you have a check returned. There are calls and notices from the business that you wrote them to.... (if the business is even still open after 11 years, I am sure they "wrote" them off long ago after turning them over for collection.....) I still do not understand your reasoning.
