Jail elevator at top of supervisors’ list
Published Tuesday, December 4, 2007
NATCHEZ — A malfunctioning elevator at the Adams County jail will likely prove to be a costly project to repair.
At yesterday’s meeting of the Adams County Board of Supervisors a plan of action for elevator repair was discussed.
County purchase clerk Rosa Wilson said the elevator needs to be fixed quickly.
Wilson said the elevator stalls between floors and often passes the next floor by up to six inches before coming to a stop.
Board members gave Wilson the go ahead to hire an elevator inspector to determine if the elevator needs to be replaced or repaired. But no matter the solution it will be costly.
The consultant from Elevator Technical Services in Alexandria has a fee of $125 per hour and charges .48 cents per mile. The inspector will evaluate the elevator.
Wilson said based on her preliminary research a new elevator system would cost over $100,000. Wilson did not have figures for elevator repair.
Board members also approved the purchase of a new pothole-patching machine.
The new machine will cost $50,750 and should be delivered in about two weeks.
County road manager Clarence “Curly” Jones said the new machine will be an asset to Adams.
Jones said while the county already one pothole-patcher, a second will allow road crews to cover twice as much ground.
“With one truck it’s hard to keep up,” he said.

its not a high rise building!! I think walking up & down the stairs will do the inmates good.

How old is the elevator? What is its useful life?
Surely, the Alexandria firm is not the only elevator repair specialist in the area.

Hmm seems like you can consult with a electronics technologist with training or application also with hydrolics like I got from Co-Lin, would be a good alternative. I am sure some of the local Electrical companies do have a few individuals that has the learning experience to do this. Just let me have some schematics and some other technical applications to the device I bet I could have it figured out in a few hours and ready to go providing if I don't have to order parts. Over shooting the floors by 6 inches, seems like to me are a relay switch device that are not making contact. This would be the 1st thing I would look for. These devices tell the computer or switching device to let it know where to actually stop. I could go on, but!!!!!

Yeah, let thetinman take a look at it! Something tells me he won't charge the astronomical price the Alex. company is asking for. See yall, we have talented, trained people right here in our area. No wonder we can't keep our experienced people in town.

"Jail elevator at top of supervisors’ list"
Let's see jobs, education, crime, etc are not at the top of the list but an (expletive) elevator is??
Maybe, we should try a recall on Supervisors! huh!

I bet anything that this is more for the employees benefit than anything else. The woman at the front desk is so huge she'd have a problem getting around any other way. I had to run in once for something non-criminal, lol, and she was very rude to boot. Rude on the phone also. Rude all the way around and that's what the ppls tax dollars pay for. I'm sure she's prolly still there.

I think this is an ADA thing. You have to have access for handicap people in buildings. I am suprised that there is a rep as close as Alexandria, whenever we need one of these guys they are scattered way across the U.S.

I forgot to say, these elevators companies usually require that service on these elevators be done by factory certified technicians. So you can't get a local electrician to work on them. There is too much liability.

I agree mike, it is mandatory as it should be. Just had to get a shot in at the rude lady. lol

mike8427, I believe that's exactly what's at play here. It's a part of the American with Disabilities Act. A lot of buildings, especially government buildings and certain corporations, are mandated to have working elevators for the disabled.

Well if that's the case then allow the Disabled to use it make the rest take the stairs it will last alot longer....Why should the employes and inmates use it? Mississippi is suppose toi be about health now so take the stairs not the elevator employees and inmates...

better yet..just put the handicap inmates on the first floor & make the rest use the stairs

So true shedevil...I didn't think about a inmate being handicapped......

An elevator cost of 100k plus, that's after no telling the cost for info that tells them what to do, vs a raise in pay for our protection hero'es. Get real, supervisors. Other arrangements could be made. Again 100k amount comes to the forefront.. What's with this amount. Seems that 100k is going to be spent some way or other. Like mama would say "That money's burning a hole in their pockets". What a laugh. It would be funny if it was not so sad.
