Red Cross short on general funds

Published Monday, December 10, 2007

Editor’s Note: This is a part of a series of stories highlighting non-profit agencies that need help or donations during the holiday season.

NATCHEZ — The Adams County chapter of the Red Cross is about to go into its first year with no funding from the United Way.

Chapter Manager Angie Brown said the $15,000 United Way normally contributes will be missed.

But Brown said the new monetary gap will not be passed on to those to whom the Red Cross provides aid.

“Of course we wish we still had it,” she said.

The Adams County Chapter of the Red Cross now runs on a budget of approximately $70,000. The agency was cut from the United Way’s list last year because the paperwork was not in place, United Way officials said at the time.

Of the Red Cross’ budget only about 10 percent comes from funds donated by the city and the county.

The rest of Red Cross’s budget comes from private donations.

“They (donations) keep us operational,” she said.

Currently the Adams County Red Cross is not funding any major relief efforts, but that could change at any moment Brown said.

Brown also said recent flooding in Washington and Oregon could draw volunteers from the Adams County chapter if the situation calls for more volunteers.

Brown said when volunteers travel all of their expenses are covered by the Red Cross.

And those travel expenses are paid for with funding that comes from donations.

Brown said unlike many other charitable groups, the Red Cross does not always see a spike in clientele during the holiday season.

However they do see a change in the needs the their clientele that revolve around the change in seasons.

To see an increase in fires during the wintertime from misused heaters is not at all uncommon Brown said.

“When people start to heat and cool their homes during the change in seasons they need to be careful,” she said.

But no matter the season the Red Cross is always in need of donations Brown said.

Brown also said all donations made to the Red Cross can be made to stay in the community of even go towards a specific project.

i know i am about to recieve alot of flak from this comment i am about to make...i dont like the red cross i think that they are the biggest waste of money. i have alot of reasons and i dont have the time to type all of them. lets just say when a few of my soldiers and myself has needed them we was told it wasnt important.....i will tell one story that just happen about a week ago....one of my soldier found out that his wife was cheating on him with a drug dealer. his wife abandoned there 5yo and 8yo. his sister called the red cross cause his grandmother died also. she(the sister)was told that they(the red cross)did not see the importance of that because there was no proof of the death and they dont have a police report about the kids....thats his story....mine is about when my grandpa died and they told my parents they wouldnt send it cause he wasnt my parents...i could go on and on about the things that has been done to soldiers. i do admit they help some people but i havent seen it and i have been deployed 3 times. dont let me even get started on the international red cross. i guess i can say they both will never get any suport from me or my family

My family and I who have always supported the salvation army also will not longer support them! This is by far not the first soldier are family that has stated this. When they go and give water and set up with the "GIVERS" donations for the march for the Jena six, it was over for lots of people I know. This was not a state of emergencey but a rally and then people in need are not helped sorry but this has offended tons of people I know.

The Redcross will never see a dime from me if I can help it because of the Jena situation. Also have heard of the Cross failing in other areas too.

Posted by kpage (anonymous) on December 10, 2007 at 8:47 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I didn't know the Red Cross set up at the Jena rally!!!! There was no catastrophe! And they went to this circus to ask for donations? What did they need the money for? To give to M. Bell's family (who reportedly are living "high off the hog" since this) or to the other boy's defense?

No wonder someone "forgot" to fill out their funding paperwork!

Gunther...if we posters had known of your troubles, we would have done what we could for you! We are grateful for your sacrifices to ensure our freedoms.

Posted by candy (anonymous) on December 10, 2007 at 9:03 a.m. (Suggest removal)

kpage, they were there handing out bottled water and helping with the rally with the monies givin by donaters! These people chose to march which is fine buy there on water, and help each other if they wanted to march! So with my donations I chose to help people in need that have been in situations that they did not chose to be in. So from now own I will help other organizations... And DITTO for me as I quote you in saying Thank you and we are grateful for your sacrifices to ensure our freedoms.

It would be nice if there were other ways the soldiers could go besides the red cross, but if one of there family is seriously ill or dies, you have to contact them through the red cross or they will not be able to come home. Even if you can call the soldier directly, they will not get leave if the red cross is not involved. Uncle Sam should make some other arrangements.

Thanks Gunther, for your service. You write as well as the two young girls from Natchez High who applied for a job where I worked. They were in the Beta club and graduating with honors. So long as you get the gist across, do not let it bother you. To cut down on idiots bugging you, though, use spell check.

Again, thanks, and if you think all of us posting here should contact Uncle Sam to tell them to use something other than the red cross, come on and let us know.

I'm somewhat confuse with "they" have the welfare system. Every black person is not on welfare (you do realize that), and for those people who are, who's to say they aren't making an effort to get off.

I've heard some of the most insenstive, illogical comments on this site, sometimes I'm even at AW!

Also, it isn't the organization making the mistakes, please take a look at the managment and management's capabilities.

Posted by candy (anonymous) on December 10, 2007 at 1:11 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Statistics, say! I have many black friends, who has told me they would not lower theirselves to stand out in the frezzing cold like a fool begging for money they will never see...Lots of white people too are gouging the welfare system also and I don't care if the klu klux klan marched they should have bought their own damn water! My donation are gave for the needy not the stupid....

Posted by candy (anonymous) on December 10, 2007 at 1:14 p.m. (Suggest removal)

And by the way my black friends work just as I do and it makes them just as mad. As a matter of fact, the black attorney I work with feels the same way...

Are we excludiing anyone?

Posted by candy (anonymous) on December 10, 2007 at 2:03 p.m. (Suggest removal)

No we are not excluding anyone! You are GREEDY instead of NEEDY no matter what color you are red, white, blue, black, pink or purple if you accept donations that were intended for the poor and needed and when you don't bring your own water and what ever other provisions that you will be needing during a march of any kind for any purpose.... Those funds should be spent for those that have been through a disaster or catastrophic event not a march!

Posted by candy (anonymous) on December 10, 2007 at 2:05 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Can you honesly say that you would rather money that you had give for a homeless person or a helpless mother and child be spent on water for a march?

Posted by candy (anonymous) on December 10, 2007 at 2:11 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I, would be equally appalled if the white supermaciest marched and a black homeless man or woman or child was doing without becase I gave a donation for a need not for a willful act !

The person that was responsible for the paperwork, has a history of not getting the paperwork done. Shortly after Katrina, I called him with questions regarding our local R.C. services and what might be available to our citizens in the event of an emergency. He told me that what is at our local R.C. is for evacuees only. I still scratch my head on that one.

Read "The Great Deluge" by Douglas Brinkley. Among other things, he describes how ineffective and wasteful the Red Cross was in the aftermath of Katrina. I donated $500 to the RC in the days immediately after the hurricane, so I was plenty steamed to read how sorry their organization was during the crisis. They will never see another dime from me.

Well, anyone who agrees with what I said if you would please contact me through here and let me know. I'm going to need help with this one! I'll repost my comment on here for you..

Ok.. So this weekend the discussion was brought up between me and a few intelligent people I know and we came up with an idea of how to get police/firemen a raise. So everyone pays property taxes right? So why not add an extra $5 every year? Its not a whole lot when you think about how much you are paying already. And that adds up with everyone who pays the property taxes. Anyways.... it would have to be passed that there would be a separate fund solely for this extra money to be put in for either an across the board raise for these guys or a "Christmas bonus" at the end of the year... So give me some feedback on this because to get this in motion I'm gonna need as much support as I can get.. and believe me I am going to be working VERY hard to get this going.

First of all gunther, thank you for serving our country. I wish we could do more for you. I gave up on the Red Cross years ago, and the Jena incident really upset me. If people want to march in the heat, fine, but I'm with Candy on this one -let them bring their own water. That's why I never donate to the United Way, because RC is one of the organizations which they give to.

Posted by shedevil (anonymous) on December 10, 2007 at 6:39 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The RED CROSS should go to the marchers that were in Jena to collect their short fall of funds.Im willing to bet they have never donated a cent.

Posted by candy (anonymous) on December 10, 2007 at 6:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Sorry I was wrong and had lots of work to catch up on! Seeing how I was sidetracked with all this. It was the Red Cross that handed out water. However the Salvation Army has done some of similar things with the funds donated to them. Firered I think its a wondeful idea whats 5 more bucks when you have to pay what we pay anyway and it would sure help the underpaid families out if nothing but once a year...

Posted by candy (anonymous) on December 10, 2007 at 7:08 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Thats my point shedevil if you had you would not dare condone that type of behavior! I would have told them that I chose to be there and have my own water! I think your on to something they can go back to Jena and collect!

Posted by shedevil (anonymous) on December 10, 2007 at 7:09 p.m. (Suggest removal)

firered...that would be a great idea & I wouldnt mind giving the 5 dollars.....but our clowns at city hall would just put it into the general fund as they do everything else so the aldermen can get themselves a nice raise

Posted by candy (anonymous) on December 10, 2007 at 7:11 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Wonder how much the Michael Bells family has donated over the years?

Posted by firered (anonymous) on December 10, 2007 at 7:19 p.m. (Suggest removal)

No they can't do it if we all get it passed that there will be an individual fund for them. It can work out to where the aldermen can't touch it!

Posted by shedevil (anonymous) on December 10, 2007 at 7:26 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I wish it would work like that firered....the firemen get money from the state to up grade equipment every year, but the clowns at city hall take it & put it into the general fund. The firemen have to raise money at the firemans ball to buy the much needed safety gear that they need.

Posted by firered (anonymous) on December 10, 2007 at 8:01 p.m. (Suggest removal)

That's why we should take it upon ourselves to see to it that those clowns don't touch OUR money. Somebody needs to put these people in check and I think that we just might be the people to do it!

I was not in town when Sharpy & The Rev were in Jena doing their best to start a Riot. Two men who call themselves Men Of God and spend their life spreading hate. I was in Texas when the march took place but did see on the news about bus loads of students being bused in to Jena from Houston. Now I believe people should have the right to protest no matter their race but I don't think we need the likes of Al or Jessie to come and bring trouble with them. They talk of hate crimes. Well I think most all crimes are hate crimes even if they are against lavender people. If the red cross was involved in the march even to hand out water then it was wrong. But I made up my mind to never give to them when I saw the way they operated after Katrina, right here in Natchez. What a waste of money. Couldn't even bother to see if people really were in need because of the storm. I still think everyone who took money from any organization when they didn't need it or have a right to the funds should be prosecuted to the max. I for one will never give again to the Red Cross. I also have heard many horror stories about the way our service men have been treated. Shame on them. Let's all remember and pray for our service men and women and all their families at this Christmas time. God Bless each and every one who have fought for our freedom.

I just said it on another post, ya'll are some kind of crazy people, but I love it. Couldn't live without it. Keep trucking. Posters, I for one have been busy on puter talking with people who are interested in FIRE'S idea. She asked if I could help and I felt honored. It is such a great idea it gives me goose bumps to think about. I suggested to her, not to think about going through any tax org. but use a bank account set up for the sole purpose of her idea. A committee can be formed by volunteers who are interested and go from there. It would be an org. created by the people, for the people, with donations only for the goodwill of our protective heroes who desperately need it. If our illustrious leaders are to cheap to see to the welfare of our people, then we can. Whats 5$,?? one less Margarita?? one less dairy queen?? one less pizza?? And I know the forces would show their appreciation to no end. Just think, this time next year they won't have to worry about their children at Christmas doing without so they can pay their bills. It would also make our Christmas much happier, knowing we did our part and the money was there for them instead of going the greedy hands that always grab it. I think this org. can grow powerful enough, that next time these leaders give themselves a raise, the org. will be there to veto it. What do you all think.

Posted by freedom42 (anonymous) on December 11, 2007 at 1:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I'll sign up today to be on the committee! Just got to figure out how to keep our public officials hands off, and how to disburse the money. Could this be a tax-free charity or foundation?

Posted by destiny (anonymous) on December 11, 2007 at 2:05 p.m. (Suggest removal)

freedom, I'm sure it could be set up that way. A commitee could be formed and as I stated they would all have an input about the disbursement. I'm just like FIRE, putting ideas out there. A bank account could be set up requiring more than one signature for safety's sake. We might can find a lawyer who will sit on board for all the legal papers we will need. I'm sure in this fair city of ours we could find a legit one to help the org. More info as people join the org. We've got some great minds out there, lets use them for this cause. Maybe we could initiate it's own network space and keep all meetings open to the public and keep a monthly report on all donations, etc. There is so much work to be done to start something like this, but I'm ready. Are ya'll?

Posted by dixiemama (anonymous) on December 17, 2007 at 5:49 a.m. (Suggest removal)

During WWII The Red Cross charged the fighting soldiers for a cup of coffee. Now that is not very patrotic during a World War.
The only charity I would give to is St Jude's in Memphis. I've never had to use them but you never know when you have small children & Grandchildren & their doors are open to anyone reguradless, of your race or if you have money or not.
If The Red Cross helped with the marchers in Jena that tells exactly what that represent & any decent American will see that!
