Burglars clean out Carter Street business
Published Tuesday, January 8, 2008
VIDALIA — Vidalia police are searching for suspects in the weekend burglary of a Carter Street business.
The Olde River Cleaners, located at 717 Carter St., was burglarized sometime over the weekend, Police Chief Billy Hammers said.
The burglars entered the building through a side window where they would not be seen, and took a computer, an undetermined amount of cash and some checks made out to the business, Hammers said.
The vandals also stole a cash register and a stereo, Olde River Cleaners owner Ricky Knapp said.
“What hurt the most was the computer they took, because it had all my accounting software and all of my business credentials on it,” Knapp said.
The business is looking at a probable loss of between $5,000 and $10,000, he said.
This was not the first time the business has been burglarized, Knapp said, and after an incident six years ago he didn’t think to take the precaution of putting bars over the windows.
“I am in the process of making arrangements to fix that right now,” Knapp said.
The police do not have any suspects at this time, but they did collect several partial fingerprints at the scene of the crime, Hammers said.

Hopefully, this business has accounts backed up on a disk, where no one could get it. Also, they should probably have been using a software with a hard code to crack, so that the account information stolen, is encrypted. As for the burglary itself, there is no mention of a burglary alarm system, bars on the windows, and yes, it has gotten to that point folks. I wonder what theft deterrents were in place? It won't ultimately stop the thieves, but we need to start making it hard for them, not so easy.

you know i can't help but think that the way these buglars are getting in and out and not being caught that they are coming in town for a couple hours grabbing stuff then getting back out of town... of course one of the people would have to know the ins and outs of natchez... hmm?? makes me wonder???

I hope they didn't have credit card numbers on that computer...

There has been a major problem with burglaries in Vidalia for over a year now and very little has been done by the police department to slow this crime epidemic. Numerous businesses up and down Carter Street have been hit. I do not recall anyone being arrested. You can go by the police department day or night and there will be 5 or 6 police cars parked at the station. Who is patrolling? Vidalia will turn into Ferriday if something is not done soon.

to invidalialouisiana i have lived in Ferriday all my life and it's not a bad place to live. Every small town or City has problems. So you see Vidalia is not immune to crimes.

a couple of years ago my moms car was broken into. They used a glass popper and stole all her credit cards check books and business keys. If that wasnt bad enough the glass they broke was one of those little triangular glasses...ha,, it was over $800 to get it replaced. Her house had a street light infront and the police patroled the neighborhood quite often. Not proud of it but my car was a mess and needed to be cleaned out. My doors were unlocked and they didnt touch my car. Guess it loked like too much work for them... Criminals are not stupid they read the same stuff we do and know what to watch for.

Did ya'll check out the Headline?
"Burglars clean out Carter Street business"
And the business just happens to be a Cleaners!
Is the ND trying to have some dark humor in the situation? Nothing is funny about getting robbed!

whatitis:
Lighten up. ND is doing their job.
It’s not “dark humor’, and they know it’s not funny.
Get a life.
