NATCHEZ — Wilkinson County Community Work Center inmate Yerby Lee Hughes simply walked off the job on Wednesday morning.

Tara Booth, a spokesperson for the Mississippi Department of Corrections, said Hughes was serving three years for an uttering forgeries conviction.

He had been incarcerated since July 2007.

Booth said Hughes was working with the Adams County Public Works Department when he went missing.

Booth did not know where Hughes was working or what type of work he was doing when he went missing.

“This is highly irregular,” she said.

Booth said since Hughes had never showed any violent tendencies and tested negative for drugs and alcohol he was eligible for the Work Center Program.

Adams County Sheriff Ronny Brown said his office had been notified of the escape.

Brown said he suspect that Hughes had some assistance in getting away from the work crew.

“He might not even be around here anymore,” he said.

Hughes was last wearing a green and white striped prison uniform.

Authorities describe Hughes as a white male with brown eyes and brown hair. He is 31 years old and weighs approximately 170 pounds.

Booth said Hughes is not considered dangerous.

Anyone with knowledge of Hughes’ whereabouts should contact the Mississippi Department of Corrections or local enforcement.

The MDOC can be reached at 662-754-6611.

He sould be anywhere by now. It has been 3 hours since he skipped out.

Why is this just now being made public?

Posted by whatitis (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 2:10 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Uh Oh!!! Lock your doors!!! Someone is coming to steal your checks!!!

Posted by kpage (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 2:11 p.m. (Suggest removal)

He's bound to stick out because of his clothes. Wonder if he had this planned? Or had help?

Posted by c_8512 (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 2:13 p.m. (Suggest removal)

go to the MDOC website and do an inmate search to see a picture of this guy.

Posted by silly_willy_24_7 (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 2:19 p.m. (Suggest removal)

myopinion, just be thankful that it did not take almost a week to report like it did over in LA a while back.

Posted by ijohnson (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 2:21 p.m. (Suggest removal)

IF he's still wearing the stripes he will be spotted. Unfortunately, he may have had some help (from the outside) and has already changed into civilian clothing and blended in with the rest of the law-abiding citizens.

Probably in Natchez right now in the convenience store buying a beer!

Thanks c_8512. I forgot about his website. I am going to emai the article to Jackson to a relative. By this time this man could be up there.

Wait! He is visiting his girlfriend! LOL!

Posted by ijohnson (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 2:24 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Yeah, ((myopinion)) he's visiting his girlfriend and driving the front-end loader they've been looking for!!! *lol*

Posted by ijohnson (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 2:28 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I wonder if they've counted all the tools to make sure he doesn't have something he can use as a weapon??

How many "eyes" are watching these guys on these work details?? How could he get out of their watch long enough to run without being seen by anybody, other inmates included?

Posted by Teach4Peace (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 2:40 p.m. (Suggest removal)

WOW! Release date 7/17/2010, he looks pretty mean too!!! This guy has changed clothes by now.

ClarionLedger article with the picture.

Posted by myopinion (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 2:44 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The last time I saw anyone watching the inmate workers, there were about 15 inmates and only 1 gaurd. If he got sidetracked with another inmate then this guy just found his chance and took it.

Posted by kpage (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 2:49 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Ole Yerby Lee looks like he'd utter a forgery in Walthall County

Posted by ijohnson (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 2:52 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Yeah, he took his chance and appears to have made a good run for it, too. Too bad for us -- who knows what he may do next.

Posted by ijohnson (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 2:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I wonder why the Democrat can't post this picture online like the Clarion Ledger? I think he has to pass thru Natchez to get to Jackson, so folks in Natchez need to know what he looks like!!!!!!

Posted by myopinion (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 2:55 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I know where he isn't!

Posted by Teach4Peace (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 2:57 p.m. (Suggest removal)

When he's caught, he just made it hard on himself. Obviously if he was on a work detail, this guy had some trustee status and for his crime, was NOT on a maximum security roster in the prison, so he could work. Well, if he's caught, good bye what little freedom he had to get out to work. 5 years added to the sentence for running, in addition to the rest of the time he has to serve run consecutively, so HE WILL NO DOUBT BE DESPERATE, while on the run. This time will be done, maximum security because he will be labeled as a runner. Smart move jack, you have labeled yourself!

Posted by ijohnson (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 2:59 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Lock your doors people -- cars and homes!!!!! A car-jacking may be the next headline we read.

Posted by CHall1229 (Christina Hall) on January 9, 2008 at 2:59 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Does anyone have any information as to where this work detail was in Adams County at the time of the escape?

Posted by myopinion (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 3 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The guy had a tentative release date for July of 2010. I bet noe it will be January of 2011. He will probably get a minor sentence for escaping. But at least it was reported on the day it happened and not 3 weeks later!

Posted by ijohnson (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 3:01 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Good thing there is not Sherriff race going on in Natchez, or would not have heard about it till after the election. lol...

Sorry, sould have said, might not have.

Posted by myopinion (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 3:26 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I know what you mean kpage. I have a feeling he is still in the Natchez area. They say the best place to hide is in plane sight.

Posted by myopinion (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 3:33 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Now, how many people read my previous post and went and looked out the window?

Posted by kpage (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 4:11 p.m. (Suggest removal)

My sweetie went to Ntz and I asked if he'd seen him. He said he would have remembered a guy in green stripes.

Of course I looked. In fact, I went outside to smoke a cig and looked all around my Vidalia neighborhood. Like he's gonna jump out of the bushes at me. Why do we react that way? I guess we're all kinda jumpy since the crime problem has escalated.

Posted by drawpaintsing (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 4:13 p.m. (Suggest removal)

What's so scary about this is that we don't where this guy is.

Posted by ntzmom (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 4:16 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I know what you mean Kpage. I am alot more observant these days and a bit jumpy too.

Posted by ijohnson (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 4:26 p.m. (Suggest removal)

No, we don't know where he is ((drawpaintsing)) or, what he may do next. Just be aware of your surroundings and don't let a "nice face" fool ya!!! Too many "nice faces" have cut people's throats as soon as they turned their backs. Be aware and suspicious of ALL STRANGERS, even females because criminals use the female to secure your trust, then they take over.

BEWARE!!!

Posted by ijohnson (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 4:29 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Looks like the Natchez Democrat must have read our comments regarding his mugshot -- they have posted the escapee's picture!!!! (((((LOUD APPLAUSE))))).

Posted by notfromnatchez (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 7:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Maybe the "professionals" that have set up a Crime Syndicate in Natchez are harboring the escaped felon.

Posted by freedom42 (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 7:55 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Yeah notfromnatchez, plus cars left with keys in them, and grocery stores without security.

Posted by notfromnatchez (anonymous) on January 9, 2008 at 8:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Don't forget about the cops behind buildings with their girlfriends...

This guy was pretty smart to escape in Natchez. He might end up retiring here.

A couple of months ago an inmate from New Jersey escaped...he was captured in Mexico City. Maybe Natchez should hire some Federales!!!

"We don't need no stinkin' badges!"

We're all locked up now! Time for bed. See ya'll tomorrow.

Posted by thetinman (Keith Reynolds) on January 10, 2008 at 3:49 a.m. (Suggest removal)

well if these detention centers and Police departments will pay better money, people can make a living working at these correctional facilities, then we will not have to worry about things like this. These private facilities I do think are bound to fail the American citizens eventually due to the fact, Corporate America. They are in it for the MONEY!!!! so they are going to cut cost so some rich person can make sure they have there new Mercedes Benz every year, Take there European Spa vacations and such!!! while paying someone trying to make a living non livable wages. ME, I am looking at these type of facilities, and say, let the Government take them. I do believe when this type of facility is government run, there employees get better benefits and pay, so they have a tendency to attract people to work for them

My Opinion

Posted by notfromnatchez (anonymous) on January 10, 2008 at 8:35 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I guess he is still at large. I figured with the diligence of the NPD he would have been captured by now.

Maybe he applied for a job with the NPD and is on patrol already...looking for himself.

Posted by opinsab (anonymous) on January 10, 2008 at 9:10 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Well I dont understand the balls of this guy i mean he probably had a lil over a year left, see another thing lets lock up and pays for this mans food clothing and bed, because he signed a couple of checks that werent his, I mean please i know men that have sexually harrassed and molested children and didnt spend one night in jail and this man gets three yrs. Now i start to understand why he skipped out yet doenst he know that eventually they will catch him. And then he gets another five to ten yrs for escaping. And no more work release!! All i can say is thats its shame for the our taxpayers to be paying for someone to live for forgeries and then he escapes and we pay for man hunt time!! YaY i love spending money

Posted by cchat123 (anonymous) on January 10, 2008 at 9:42 a.m. (Suggest removal)

He's not considered a danger. He will however be apprehended on petty theft charges. He may even turn himself back in after learning how difficult it is to survive in open society without financial means.
