Series of events leads New Orleans resident to Natchez

Seven-year-old Jarrod Lambert stretches as he and he his parents Carrie and Don relax in their living room Saturday afternoon. The Lamberts recently moved to Natchez from Las Vegas.
NATCHEZ — Carrie Lambert says she has Mississippi mud in her veins.
After living in New Orleans and in Las Vegas, for years, she is now in Natchez —and loving it.
“I’ve been coming to Natchez since I was 8 years old,” Lambert said. “Living in Natchez to me is like living in a fairy tale.”
There were many turns of events that took place before Lambert made her decision to settle in the city she loves.
First was her decision to leave New Orleans and move to Las Vegas.
She had a dream one night, she said, that she was carrying her 7-year-old son Jarrod through downtown New Orleans with water up to her chest.
She awoke from that dream with a feeling that something was going to happen and was weary of dealing with hurricane season.
So Lambert, her husband Don and her son moved to Las Vegas.
“Eight months later, Katrina hit,” she said.
Another factor that took them out West was her husband’s construction job.
Lambert said that construction is very crooked in New Orleans and her husband, who is from Santa Barbara, Calif., was not accustomed to it.
“So, I said, ‘Let’s go out West,’” Lambert said.
They first moved to Arizona, but were unhappy living there.
“It was like living in the twilight zone,” she said.
They moved to and stayed in Las Vegas for two and a half years, where Lambert worked as a paralegal.
Lambert said life in Las Vegas was not wild, as she kept away from places for which the city is known.
“Vegas, I wasn’t into it,” she said.
She did have an exciting experience one Saturday on her way to work, however.
Lambert said as she was trying to park in order to get into her office building, but there were cops preventing cars from entering the lots, so she tried another lot, that was completely empty except for one couple.
She was wondering what all the fuss was about, she said, but then she looked up and saw something unusual.
“There was a plane circling the high rise offices and it was black,” she said. “There was a lot of noise. And there was a helicopter flying around, also.”
Lambert, in a panic, called her husband and asked him to turn the television news on to see what was going on, but there was nothing on the news.
“Turns out, they were filming Oceans 11 or 12,” Lambert said. “It scared us to death. Who was to know?”
At the beginning of summer, right before she moved to Natchez but after she had already made her decision, some criminal events began taking place that solidified Lambert’s decision to move.
“High school kids were doing home invasions,” she said. “They were breaking in and robbing and tying people up.”
She said in Las Vegas, there’s no such thing as a neighborhood watch program.
“On the whole, nobody knows anyone,” she said.
You could be getting robbed and your next-door neighbors would do nothing about it, Lambert said.
The violence of the break-ins increased, from tying victims up, to beating them and finally to killing them.
“I said pretty soon they’re going to kill someone and then it happened,” Lambert said. “The next week of two, the same thing happened and I said, ‘That’s it, I’m getting out of here.’”
In a place like Natchez, you feel protected, Lambert said.
Lambert said she is happy to be in the South, for herself and for her family, as well.
“I wanted my son to grow up in a Southern community,” Lambert said. “My son was growing up without what I consider proper manners.”
Lambert’s husband was unable to move to Natchez for five months, something Lambert said was very difficult.
“But it’s something we wanted for our family, so we made the sacrifice.”
Her motivation to move to Natchez was the city, not a job, so she was unemployed when she first came. But she opened up the newspaper to the classifieds section and saw an opening for the job she has now as director of the Natchez Downtown Development Association.
“It was almost like divine intervention,” she said.
Lambert, her husband, son and their dog Coco are enjoying finally living in Natchez.
“Just to be in Natchez is magical,” Lambert said.

Dang. I wish I could feel the same way about Natchez. It sounds almost delusional. It always sounds delusional to me when someone moves here and thinks it's great.
I guess if you don't get bored, and don't mind rudeness and stupidity, it wouldn't be as bad...
I think the Democrat should do a follow-up, in about 2 years and see if these people are still as happy... or if they've died from boredom.

Locust, I don't know what you are doing with your time, but I have lived other places and by far this is one of the best places to live. We have so much to do, my calender is feeled up and complain because I have to much to do. Everyone of our friends that come visit from out of town just love this place. In fact I was talking to a couple that moved here close to a year ago from Hattiesburg and they mentioned that their friends keep asking them when they are moving back. She keeps telling them that they have had so much going on and having fun that they haven't even considered moving back. They love it here. I wonder sometimes what peoples expectations are from the erea that they live in. I find that any place is what you make it. I assure you, unless something major happens, I will never leave Natchez. My family and I love it here.

Great story!! I'm so glad you're happy living in Natchez and raising your son here. Hopefully, you will continue to feel safe and at peace. Natchez is a great place to live. Let's keep the bad guys out and keep the businesses coming in . . . heck, the availability of good jobs is the only reason A LOT of law-abiding good folks have moved away!!! Otherwise, I would still be living there, too. But I'm glad things worked out for you.
May God continue to bless you and your family!

I too love Natchez to pieces and notice those that complain have simply never ventured out to see what this town has to offer! There's a whole world outside your front door....check it out! Get involved in various activities and enjoy life in Natchez!

I LOVE Natchez!! I grew up there, but live elsewhere now. I think about Natchez all the time and dream of moving back. We hope to be back in a few years. I live in a big city and trust me, those that live in Natchez have it made...I miss going places and seeing familiar faces. You can always know that if you need something or help, it is always right there!
I know our expectations are different, but trust me, Natchez is one of the best places to live. What a beautiful little town! Gotta love Natchez!!!

EXACTLY! If you don't appreciate the kindness and I mean TRUE kindness of the people here, go live somewhere else for a while and see how much THEY care.

Good morning, all! Locust - I can assure you that I will feel this way in 2 years - in 20 years - and thereafter. I've lived elsewhere for 48 years - mostly New Orleans - which I also love dearly. Through the years I've lived places with their share of "challenges" - so I know what we have here in Natchez and I treasure it. Many of us are trying to bring about some changes that will help the dream grow here in Natchez - to bring the magic to all. My father's an artist - and I owe God and my parents all that I am today - especially from the "dreaming" aspect. We all have to work together as a community to bring about positive changes in Natchez - but it begins with 1 person - then another - then another - and it has started to happen. I didn't start it - others have - but I've jumped on that band wagon - there are many fine places to live - but none finer than here - in our own back yard - in Natchez. The world around us has changed - unfortunately - many times for the worse - and some of that has come to Natchez - but with determination and love - we will root evil out and bring Natchez to new days of glory by building on what's great here and creating more!!! I say I caught "Natchez fever" when I was 8 - and I never want to be cured of it - my son caught it when we moved here 6 months ago and will flat out tell you he loves Natchez and never wants to leave - now my husband's coming down with it bad, too!!! So let's not concentrate on the negative - look around you at all the positive - and the beauty! I never cease to be amazed and caught off guard at the beauty God has blessed this city with - and not just nature's beauty - but the people!!! Go to the bluff at sunset - or any time of the day - walk around your neighborhood - take a drive downtown and walk those historic streets!!! This city is amazing and brings tears to my eyes!!! The Natchezians are even more amazing - some of the finest, most loving people on earth live here. I feel so blessed to live among you. Thank you for your positive comments and support - and thanks to all who post positive comments as well!! I know that together we can bring about the changes we need here - speaking of which - today we celebrate the man who had a dream - and brought about so much change - 1 man - with a dream - who changed so much - Happy Martin Luther King Day! Pay it forward!!! Good day and blessings to all!

Trust me, the majority of people in big cities don't care that you have three children under the age of four riding in your car. If you aren't driving over the speed limit, they will run you over!! I hate driving in this city and I feel like I am putting my children's lives at risk every time we hit the road...Sayitloud, you are so right that Natchez offers TRUE kindness to its citizens...Just my opinion!!

Wow, you almost brought tears to my eyes with your post. I agree with everything you said. I miss strolling downtown and hearing the church bells in the background, the smell of the sweet olive trees and Pearl St. Pasta. I miss hearing the boats as they travel the mighty Mississippi River. I miss that it took me at least an hour to grocery shop because you always stopped and talked to your friends. I miss that when my oldest was a baby, I had so many people come by and visit us and offer their help. I miss going to the marketplace for coffee and beignets, and visiting with Mr. Mike. I miss seeing all my friends and family. Natchez is truly magical and trust me, after living elsewhere, I feel that it is more magical than ever!

If Natchez was like it was when I was growing it would be a great place to live, but it's not the same safe town it use to be. I'm sure compared to larger cities it is a nice place to raise a family, but compared to the 40's & 50's it's not.

Wow..I've never thought someone would appreciate natchez that was from a big city. I love Natchez, its beautiful in some areas though the people here aren't too great sometimes. My favorite area is the riverfront, but I am going to happily leave Natchez adn the entire state of Mississippi as soon as possible, my dreams are unfortunately bigger than the town.

You are right...I do have the fever, my husband too. Unfortunately, his work will keep us here a bit longer. We will be back and we know it. The last time I was there, I drove around and saw all the wonderful things taking place, it gets us even more excited about moving back. I do see progress. We moved from Natchez a couple of years ago and it is amazing what has happened in those two years.
When we move back, I want to get involved and help out in any way that I can. I think Natchez is lucky to have someone like Carrie in charge of the NDDA. Her enthusiasm and love for our blessed town is contagious!!

You know, the only negative I see regarding Natchez is the property values. Man, real estate values have really skyrocketed!!! The homes I see advertised online and in the newspaper carry hefty price tags for what looks like a "teardown". With the lack of good paying jobs and viable industries, I wonder where people will get the money to afford a decent home.
Why have the property values increased so much?

NPC- I have also lived in many other cities and states. Some bigger and some smaller than here, and by far, this is NOT the best of them.
You wondered what I am doing with my time here? Well, I wonder the same about the rest of you! I don't gamble or go to bars or get drunk, or stir-up chaos, so what else is there to do? Go to Walmart?
And 'sayitloud': what is this about people being so "nice" here? Do you mean BEFORE you turn your back to them?
Maybe the people who feel more content here are older than me, which is why they don't "get it". I've been here for A WHILE and still haven't found anything "fun", unless I drive 2 hours in another direction.

LocustStorm......be more specific will you? Exactly WHO have I turned my back on?
Posted by southern_bell (anonymous) on January 21, 2008 at 8:51 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Well I was born and raised here in the miss-lou area, and nothing is great about these towns. Where is the Historic stuff they talk about. Duncan Park has changed, new buildings have been put up for all the high society people. I have lived in different states and this is the only place where it has nothing for teenagers. I wish I could leave but family keeps me here for now. And when they are gone, ADIOS MISS-LOU.

sayitloud, I wasn't specifically saying that you have turned your back on anyone. When I said "you" I didn't specifically mean YOU.
When you said people are nice, I was asking: Nice when? Nice to your face and then when "you" (meaning whoever, not specifically you) turn "your" back (not specifially you, but anyone), then they are backstabbing "you"? I'm not sure if that was specific enough for you or not....
SouthernBell: I agree exactly with what you said.

Now back to the comment....myself I believe people treat you the way you treat them. I'll live if someone is nice to my face and then speaks badly of me when I leave!! Sorry but THAT won't kill me.

Locust, have you ever lived in a town this size that has an opera, little theatre, balloon race, blues festival, mardi gra, food tasting, hunting expos, ballet, hunting, fishing, camping, kayak race, state parks, cemetary tour, beautiful homes that you can actually go in and tour, golf, indian village, ms river, lakes, wildlife refuge with walking trails, downtown is constantly having events that you can join in, close friends that my family and I get together with on a regular basis. Their are many events that I didn't mention. I have so many truely close friends here that they are like family. I didn't meet all these people knocking on my door at home. I had to get involved in the community. I love going to Piggly Wiggly and knowing 50% of the people in there. My kids have a ton of friends here, because they are involved. They are constantly getting together with them and having a blast. I hate to here of people like yourself not enjoying the place you live. I hope that you find happiness wherever you chose to live. It always interest me to see how two people can look at the same thing and see something so different.

I have to echo the positive comments about Natchez. It is an oasis of craziness in the world.
Clean air. Stress free living. We have all the great stuff life has to offer.
Maybe some who have only bad things to say need to get some new focus in their lives. Maybe working with thier hands and the earth. Planting a crop doesn't leave you with time to be bored.
Posted by LocustStorm (anonymous) on January 22, 2008 at 2:04 p.m. (Suggest removal)
opera < Doesn't interest me
little theatre <doesn't interest me
balloon race < is only once a year
blues festival < doesn't interest me/ I don't like "the blues"
mardi gras <what? 2 little rinky-dink parades? this is "fun" to me, but they could be better and should last longer.
food tasting < yep, you've GOT to be older than me, if this interests you... no offense.
hunting expos < I DON'T hunt.
ballet < ??? I'm not into ballet
hunting, fishing, camping, <no thanks, I don't hunt, fish or camp. I like plumbing and electricity and no mosquitoes.
kayak race <<still not interested.. I like THE LAND under my feet.
state parks <been there, done that. What's the interest?
cemetary tour<< and this is interesting how?? I've been there 100 times....
beautiful homes that you can actually go in and tour <been there, done that. Not very interesting at all, to a person like me.
golf < DEFINITELY NOT INTERESTED!
indian village < been there, done that.
ms river, lakes, <Nice but not "fun"
wildlife refuge with walking trails < been there, done that.
Okay. Now, see, that's why you like it here and I don't. We are different types of people, in different age-ranges. What interests you doesn't interest me or impress me.
And I HAVE lived in smaller towns that had more to offer than what all you listed. They might not have had a "faux Mardi Gras"... or old homes to tour, but they made up for that with more exciting things.
I'd be more impressed by a ZOO; A PUBLIC POOL; some sort of Amusement Park - whenever there's a carnival in town, people FLOCK to it, don't they?? I used to live in a place that had a skating rink with an amusement park inside of it... that was pretty fun.
It doesn't make either of us a bad person just because we have different ideas of what's fun... I just wanted you (and others) to realize that what y'all might be content with doesn't make everyone content. And I'm not being negative, I'm just honest.
Posted by npc (anonymous) on January 22, 2008 at 2:57 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Fair enough Locust, we have different interest and chances are that I am much older than you. I could also say, zoo, been their done that. Seen one tiger seen them all. Skating have absolutely no interest, but the difference between us is attitude. I could go to either one of these and have the time of my life. The point that I am trying to get across is that you have to come up with your on interest and fun. A town can assist in this or not. It is what you make it. I have lived here in different ages of my life, and in every instance, my friends and I have had a life that I can only hope that someday you can experience. I don't keep responding to you as a means of picking on you. I like hearing from people with other opinions. This really interest me because from my perspective I here nothing but positive things about Natchez. I have friends from all over the U.S. and they all LOVE coming here and think that we are some of the luckest people to get to live here. I wish you all the luck in finding what makes you happy.

(( NPC )) Well I agree with LOCUST all the stuff here in Natchez we have all been to. But you also have to stop and think that none of it is the same as when we were growing up. Alot of it is new stuff, but my kids are grown and nothing is interesting to them. Where is the BIG WATER PARK Natchez was suppose to build? Yeah we have a bowling alley ( $3.00 to get in ) and a skating rink. WOW!!!! Everything you mention about what Natchez has to offer, the new generation has no interest in it. The children of today is Natchez's future!. If we can't provide enough for them to do of what they like, the crime will rise higher because of boredom.

Me again - I hear you loud and clear - I realize that what I know and love about Natchez does not capture everyone's heart the way it has mine - and I am actually working on (along with others) other things to do here - especially for the young - but it doesn't happen overnight. Please call me at Downtown Development - get on some of my committees - give us some ideas of what interests you - help us work and build these dreams so that there will be something here for EVERYONE!!! That is my goal - I want to keep Natchez pure - historically accurate - and while there is SO much here for SO many people - there is still so much more we can bring here - and I really want to do that - as do many of the leaders here. Call me - help me - I have a 25 year old daughter - we are all individuals which is what makes each of us so special - including you, Locust - so anyone who wants to see other things done - which would be great - like a Big Water Park - let's open dialogue - I've heard of this - but there are actually some things in the works you may not know about - so call me - let's dialogue!!! We need people like you with good ideas - who want more - to help us build Natchez into even more!!!

Southern_bell, you make my point exactly. Kids now days have to have something to intertain them. I know of very few towns under 30,000 that have amusement parks, etc. We learned to entertain ourselves. You can here that complaint from young people in every town across america. Where does it stop, you put an amusement park (which I think would be great), kid goes to it 10 times in one year and been their done that. Then we are back to their is nothing to do in this town. Until we learn to entertain ourselves with the simple things in life, you will never find entertainment. The only point that I am trying to make is Natchez is as nice or better (depending who you are talking to) than any other town in America. I am just a person that chooses to look at the positive. The negative just makes life miserable.

Well that's just the point isn't it? You have to get involved if you want something. SO DO IT! I am involved in too much sometimes! But I am doing things I enjoy and want - so if you want something Natchez does not offer, find a way to help and quit complaining there's nothing to do. It's like a bunch of kids the day after Christmas.

If your kids are bored they aren't doing enough homework or house work or have a job.
There are plenty of farms and plantations around Natchez that need farm hands. Get a job.
Learn how to provide for yourself.

Well my kids are not bored. They both have good jobs. And they have friends they hang out with on the weekends. And I guess alot of the others are not bored either because look at all the crime being commited by teens, have to be enterained somehow I guess. I'm just saying bring into Natchez more stuff for their age. Kids are not thrilled about a new condo, casino or who has the prettiest old house to tour. They want excitment, something they can tell their kids about what Natchez had for them to do. Where are all the good stuff my parents used to tell me about when they where growing up, like the drive in theaters, A & W, riding their bikes all over town not worring about being abducted and that kind of stuff. All I am trying to say is lets bring the old Natchez back like it used to be. Where kids can play on the streets, go to drive in movies and hang out at a the A & W we all remember.
(( clambert58 )) Why do you say contact you and give suggestions when all the major industries have closed. ( paper mill, tire factory, johns manville ) everybody is having to move away because of that. I think that if I am not suggesting a new condo or casino I want built, my voice will not be heard!!!! If I don't have alot of money or be rich, or belong to the Garden Club the Committee won't even pay attention to what I want for the community.
Posted by clambert58 (anonymous) on January 22, 2008 at 6:53 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I say contact me so I can hear suggestions for what people want to happen here - blogs aren't enough - I have committees that are always looking for people to sit on them - help with things - come up with ideas - if you ask people I have met with they will tell you that I do hear their voice and like I said - while change does not occur overnight - we are making strides - and I want to hear from the people of this town - in person - about what you'd like to see happen.

((southern_bell)((LocustStorm) & everyone else complaing about Natchez MOVE! All of this whinning is getting a little childish.
If you think it's so far back in time try fighting the mad house of NYC. Just getting to work everday you have to wonder if your throat will be cut!
Sure my kids have places like ice skating, operas, concerts & theaters but it's not safe to let them out of your sight.
I have relatives that live in Natchez & I loved the summers I spent witth them.

Hello Old Friend...(Natchez)...I too want to move back Home to Natchez. I've been gone most of my adult life but my family still lives there. I live in Panama City Beach, Florida and I miss home everyday. The reason I moved is because The Natchez Trace Parkway, the new road on Liberty Rd. took our houses. We had no choice but to move! I will never forget that day as long as I live. We had 3 houses on Liberty Road and they made us sell them all to the Natchez Trace and relocate. I chose P.C.B. because that's where I went every summer anyway...wrong. I miss the (everything)
about it but like one of the people said...until your back's turned...LOL and I did!! That's what I remember the most; all the Gossip. I raised my kids with this great line..."if you don't have something good to say, don't say anything at all".
Here's another one..."everyone has something good in them, you've just got to keep looking for it". And in these times...we have to look & look & look...LOL But really, if any body knows someone looking to relocate to Florida??? Get to gossipping cause my house is for sale and I'd gladly trade it with anyone there in a heart-beat. Do I hear an Amen??? "Got to get Gillian off the Island"...Amen. Anybody intrested in moving away from the good life, write me an email...and like I said, I will trade you, even steven. LOL anybody remember that old saying? Wonder where that came from? Oh well, later...I can't wait to read the emails...

Well I remember the days when you could go to the Natchez Trace and just pull off on the side of the road and picnic, play football, softball and have all kinds of fun. What happened to them days?????
when i was a kid you could ride out to the trace(and it was free)on the weekend and it would be people EVERYWHERE,Don't try to pull off in the grass under a shade tree today you'll be theratened with a ticket.Quick story-my mom and dad pulled off the road one day a few years back to sit with the mini-van trunk(back door) open and were eating and just chillin' and then BOOM a ranger had snuck up on them and thought they were making out (lol) and made them leave.
Like some people on here are saying if you are not a member of the country club you have to just twiddle your thumbs or play video games.
It really is quite boring here, really.
OH YEAH!>>>>>>> www.ronpaul2008.com

All I can say is Natchez has much more happening than any town of its size 2 hours away from a major city. Of course we don't have some things that a larger city has. Jackson Miss. had an Ice Skating Rink; it just closed due to a lack of business.
The fabled water park is not feasible for Natchez as we don't have enough residents or tourists.
NPC is right we are lucky to have so many events and the people who work hard to make all them happen.
It is easy to find fault and to be bored in Natchez, though some people would be bored in Jackson, Baton Rouge or even New York or London. Life is often what you decide to make of it.
Welcome Carrie, best of luck with the NDDA.

Build a water park 1/2 way between Brookhave and Natchez and that will also draw the Louisiana people.

Linen - just the other day, you said that Natchez had more snobs and crime than NYC. Now you're saying if people don't like it here, they should move??
So, now, I've been called "negative" and "whiney" and "childish"... and I'm told to just MOVE?
That's a "good" idea.... how about if EVERYONE that wants a better Natchez "just move" their whiney, negative, childish butts elsewhere... I'm SURE that would help this place.
I'll just rip my family apart and leave my ailing relatives, and move away.... right after I magically crap out the money to afford it!!!
Oh - and off the subject but I thought some of you might like to know: when you put someone's name in parentheses online, like this: ((locust)), it is representative of an 'online hug'.

"Linenbreeze" I agree with "locust" - why do should we have to move just because we are bored with Natchez? We have family here and I tell you when my family is gone I will move!!!! You don't live here to know what we are talking about. So why are you putting your 2cents in anyway !!!! You say you used to spend your summers here, but until you live here you don't know what you are talking about. Try raising kids here, it's nothing for them to do. So until you are in our shoes, STAY IN NEW YORK !!!!!!!!!

Why would anybody want to stay in New York when they could live in Natchez? I have no desire to live elsewhere. But I am a peaceful quiet soul who likes her routine! lol
