Downtown sees more break-ins

Published Wednesday, January 23, 2008

NATCHEZ — Police Chief Mike Mullins said two early Tuesday morning robberies on Wheeler Avenue and Auburn Avenue were not the work of the man police have identified as a suspect in the downtown burglaries.

Police have not made that suspect’s name public yet.

“We were able to confirm he was at home during these robberies,” Mullins said.

Mullins said at approximately 4:25 a.m. a couple on Wheeler Avenue heard one of their windows being slid open.

Mullins said when the homeowners got up to investigate, they scared the would be intruder.

“He ran off before entering the house,” he said.

Mullins said the homeowners were able to see the would-be intruder.

He was described as a male, wearing a dark colored jacket, standing approximately 6 feet tall.

At approximately 8 a.m., on nearby Auburn Avenue, another burglary was reported.

Mullins said he suspects the same perpetrator was involved in both cases.

On Auburn a vehicle was broken into and three pocketknives and $20 in cash were stolen.

At the same residence, the unlocked laundry room was also burglarized.

Mullins said a set of golf clubs and various tools were stolen from the laundry room.

There was also evidence at the scene to suggest that the burglar may have attempted to enter the home through a window, Mullins said.

Mullins said on Tuesday evening he does not have any suspects in the latest burglaries.

Mammas don't let your sons grow up to be burglars in Natchez....they'll get their butts shot off.

Seriously, if you know your son is doing stuff in the middle of the night, you had better sit on him now. Too many people are getting too frustrated from lack of action on these problems.

cute post! this really makes me want to go off but i can't here. i'd be in trouble if i said what i wanted to about the kind of person that goes into ppl homes while they are sleeping. i've bitten my tongue somewhat so far but i'm beginning to wish that someone would put a cap in a few of these ppl.

I am telling ya'll, everyone go get a dog.
Everyone should be so lucky as to have the unconditional love of a dog!
They love you and will protect you!
Mine hear everything and let me know when smeone is walking down the street.

I wonder if any of the homes broken into had a dog...anyone know?

I don't know if it is being done, but it seems that finger prints should be collected at these burglary sites (and possibly shoe prints) and a data base formed. Like I said, maybe this is being done already.

Here is an emial sent to me...enjoy it folks!! Did anyone else get this in their inbox?

The user disappointed sent the following message to you via The Natchez Democrat:

==============================

As a new resident to Natchez MS, I am not biased by "old money" or "well known families". I am, however, from the south, and I am terribly disappointed in the display of ignorance these blogs have shown. It is a disgrace to the town, as well as the justice system. Justice is blind and in case you have forgotton, or simply never knew, one is innocent until proven guilty in this country. As far as "the suspect" is concerned, I believe it is a desparate attempt on the NPD to cover up their incompetance to catch a petty criminal. And further more, if you believe for one moment that a "crack-head" could out-smart, out-wit, and out right Out DO the NPD, you must not have too little faith in the police, or eithter too much in a "crack-head" ;as you so candidly stated. I am amazed, not at the number of blog entries on the matter, because it is serious, but at the emphasis put on whose family is envolved. This, by all out-ward appearances, seems to be a case of too much time on one's hands, and approaching dangerously close to slander. Step lightly and find a new hobby. Idle hands do the devils work. My deepest sympathy to the family that has lost a loved one. I do not make light of the situation, and hope the culperate, whomever it is, is detained without further tragedy or loss. I find it most disturbing that the paper reports merely gossip as opposed to NEWS, and that some are so simple-minded or uneducated enough to believe such. So i say this to those of you awaiting the arrival of your daily paper, "You can't believe everything you read!" So as I will continue to follow this story, I am anxiously awaiting the culperate to be brought to justice, as are you, however, it seems that you have already "nailed" the guy. So if you are wrong, will I have the pleasure of seeing your humble apology to those you have slandered.

P.S.
Being a "natchez mom" i would hope you spend as much time parenting as you do blogging.

To address disappointed's email that the police are "As far as "the suspect" is concerned, I believe it is a desparate attempt on the NPD to cover up their incompetance to catch a petty criminal." just shows the ignorance of her knowledge of what police do. They are expected to catch the drug dealer on the street, patrol the entire city with only 4-5 officers working a shift, respond to domestic disturbances, false alarms on old-out-dated alarm systems, respond to accidents, and look for the one specific house the bad guy is looking at breaking into. It is a difficult task to accomplish and it does take time. The police may or may not know who the bad guy is, but unlike some, before the police speculate too loudly they must make sure that they have the evidence to bring charges about. Rome was not built in a day, and this is not CSI. If it was CSI the police could have solved this case before the first commerical break and pull finger prints off of a pool of water

WEll looks like Natchez P.D. is working on there case. The Sheriffs department is not interested in the 4 people who threw rocks at my house last Saturday and almost broke some windows and busted my siding on my house. The 3rd time this has happened in the past year to me.

Posted by ntzmom (anonymous) on January 23, 2008 at 5:06 a.m. (Suggest removal)

tinman, install a security camera, maybe you can catch them on tape!

Posted by thetinman (Keith Reynolds) on January 23, 2008 at 5:16 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Ntzmom, I have a few. I am having to add better lighting now. The camera just didn't get them being so dark. I got a street light now I am goign to put up today. My house will be very well lit up. I was asked to put up digital outdoor deer cameras, but I know every car that passes by will trigger the camera to take and I am afraid this may case for blinding the driver in the car passing buy from the flash.

I know why these people are doing this, "HATE" and the sheriffs department isn't doing anything about it.

Ha ha. Disappointed hasn't lived there long enough to know what he/she is preaching about. But he/she should use spell check before sending shame shame emails.

I heard on the radio in another community that local law enforcement was having a series of small seminars for those interested in defending themselves against home invasion.

Maybe Chief Mullins should put something like this together for Natchez.

sayitright, if not, then Randy Maxwell would probably give one. He's great at having neighborhood watch meetings, safety seminars and just keeping the public aware of dangers and how to protect themselves. Wouldn't hurt to ask him to give one and all could come over to attend.

Hey all! I have read these comments for weeks now and decided to put in my two cents worth.... This is absolutly rediculous! As small as this town is and the law cannot catch a burglar! Ok, so they have a suspect but why isn't he being held???? Everyone knows who they are talking about because that is all anyone is talking about. He is a crack head! Put him away! Who cares who his parents are if he is a criminal! He is going to get killed if he continues to break into people's homes. (which might be the best thing)
Ahhhh. That feels better! I had to get it out!
Thanks!

That email ntzmom got was a crock! This person obviously hadn't lived here long enough to understand how small town Natchez works. Disappointed, you just sit back and watch, you'll see. Don't judge us for our opinions. The story the Democrat put on here was actually news. The comments are for our opinions and none are meant to be viewed as fact. Get over it! This guy is a crackhead and I'm still not convinced that he was at home during these recent burglaries. He's been slick enough to evade the cops so far, how do they really know he was at home?

Posted by kpage (anonymous) on January 23, 2008 at 9:54 a.m. (Suggest removal)

The email ntzmom got was littered with misspellings, incorrect punctuation, and poor grammar. The subject matter made no sense, either. Let's not be threatened by ignorance! We can't bring that poster up to our level so let's not get down on his!
I personally think the majority of us are smart and have some common sense. He/She on the other hand, has shown how inept a fool can be when they open their mouth (or their keyboard).

Posted by eagles (anonymous) on January 23, 2008 at 9:55 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Now we have kegs and other things stolen from businesses? When are these guys going to slip up and get caught? I doubt that the same person did the Kenilworth burglaries and the Liberty Road burglaries, but are they poking fun at law enforcement? I hope not. Is it just a game to see how much they can get away with before they are caught? I feel sorry for our law enforcement. They are understaffed, underpaid and working hard to arrest these criminals, only to watch them be turned back out on the streets.

The break in I am talking about was in October of 2007. That is how long they have known about this guy. So this is not new to them. The info I get is He has a warrent for his arrest......they could care less. I bet if it happened to them they would care. Like I alwas say..... it takes something bad to happen for them to open their eyes.. and as far as an arrest and warrent that is a BIG JOKE>>>>>cause my friends X- Husband has a warrent for not paying child support for many years and like I said they do nothing cause his brother actually works for the P.D. So you see it is a double standard you scratch my back and I will scratch yours. they get a snitch and try to catch a bigger fish and that NEVER happens!!!!!!!! And oh by the way this is for the CPSO and Vidalia PD also!

I agree CS, something is not adding up.
Once, when a purse snatching happened downtown, I told the police that I had seen the guy sitting on the bench outside the Eola. I asked if they could go fingerprint the left armrail of the bench and they laughed at me and said I was watching too much Televisio.
I raised an eyebrow and went on my way shaking me head.

Posted by Peace007 (anonymous) on January 23, 2008 at 12:32 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The burgular may be wearing gloves, and in that case...there would be no fingerprints.

Why are all of you giving up so much information to the burgular? Shhhh, don't tell him, or them, how many cops we have on patrol. Don't give him/them the impression that our cops don't know how to take fingerprints and stuff like that.

IMHO, there is more than one doing the breaking and entering...2 crackheads. What I wonder is, are there any common occurences between those being targetted for the break-ins? IE: Did all of these people, whose homes have been broken into, have any construction work, concrete work, air conditioning repairs, etc and so on, by the same contractor or repairman? Is this someone who could already know what who has in their homes?

Posted by ROCKSTEADY (anonymous) on January 23, 2008 at 12:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I think that people are starting to realize that the NPD is doing the best they can, even through the ACSO is snatching yet another NPD officer this month, Mullins has spent money on overtime to provide officers to patrol our streets, and he is riding at all hours of the night tring to catch this guy. I do believe that dogs are a good deterent, and I still believe that a reward should be posted all over town, not just in the newspaper, do crach-heads read the paper ? let the money work againest them.Is there programs provided by law enforcement dealing with home security?

I'd like to know if anyone out there can give us the real truth. Was he actually arrested or just questioned? If he were just questioned, I understand why his name isn't being put out. However, if he was actually arrested, and someone is hiding that, then we should all expose him. I do realize someone is innocent until proven guilty, but get real. We know what he's done and we know he's not innocent. Can someone from the inside just tell us if he was arrested or if that's just rumor? No need to give names, just tell us if the "person of interest" was in fact arrested.

Posted by ntzmom (anonymous) on January 23, 2008 at 1:11 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Surely he was not actually arrested. I really believe that Julie Finley would under no circumstances not publish the arrest record. I mean, i would be totally shocked to find out any different.

Hey. I didn't see that you spoke to me because they are posting out of order. Why is that happening?

Posted by peaceout (anonymous) on January 23, 2008 at 3:01 p.m. (Suggest removal)

i think it only happens when a person posts more than once in a row.

I wonder if there is anything new? Seems like we are going to be waiting a while for this to end. It's frustrating.

what's the deal with the surveilance tapes? what's on them?

Posted by shedevil (anonymous) on January 23, 2008 at 7:03 p.m. (Suggest removal)

something i dont understand...the natchez democrat put the guys name in the paper that shot another guy thirty something times.his name was in the paper numerous times & was juat a suspect at the time.he was arrested later by the us marshalls.so why cant they put this guys name in the paper?i want to believe its not because of who his parents are.

Good question!

Posted by peaceout (anonymous) on January 23, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. (Suggest removal)

well, that guy was WANTED for 3 murders but this town does make up it's own rules sometimes. (IMHO)

Posted by eagles (anonymous) on January 23, 2008 at 7:39 p.m. (Suggest removal)

True. But, I think they had eye witnesses on that case. I don't think there are any on this one (at least none that have seen his face). I would think sooner or later, they will slip up.

Posted by peaceout (anonymous) on January 23, 2008 at 7:43 p.m. (Suggest removal)

did'nt 3 cops know who it was from the tape?

Posted by eagles (anonymous) on January 23, 2008 at 7:49 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I wasn't sure. I thought that tape was of someone using the credit card that was stolen. But, that doesn't mean that person was the one who stole it. They said he was trading items for drugs, so it could have been anyone that had it. Even so, why wasn't that name released?

Posted by peaceout (anonymous) on January 23, 2008 at 7:51 p.m. (Suggest removal)

oh, that's right. it was from a store. and i don't know about the name thing. i can only guess.

peaceout and eagles..."friends of friends in high places!"

Posted by eagles (anonymous) on January 23, 2008 at 7:55 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I understand that about the main suspect, but I kind of assumed the other one didn't have any pull. If nothing else, the family of the main suspect would want the guy's name released that was on the tape just to take the heat off of baby boy.

For those of you that think NPD is not doing all they can, and or just don't care, I'm sure they have a slot for you. Go get an application. Oh yea, you wouldn't (or can't) do what they do for twice what they get paid. It seems that for what the city pays you are getting more than what you pay for.

Posted by eagles (anonymous) on January 23, 2008 at 8 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Take it easy. I'm not blaming the PD for anything. I have often said I support them and I know they are underpaid and working hard on this case. Not all of us are poking fun at them.

Posted by LdyBreez (anonymous) on January 23, 2008 at 8:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The video survailance tape is of the man who received stolen property, (at least I think that is what the artical stated) he was at a gas station in Ferriday using a card that was reported stolen in one of the breakins...

csguidry -- Quotes from you - "looks as if the police have forgotten how to investiagte a crime or they are not too interested" -- "I garee police and fire do deserve more pay for the degree of danger they face with their jobs however they knew this when they signed up." -- "Common sense would tell you that if in fact these robbers are handling glass windows ect then there should be prints how about lifting some and doing some real police work for a change." -- "They also have to be pawning the items taken somewhere for cash Why not check the pawn shops and put the word out in other towns?"

Show me, and some others here, what you have. Go down and get an application and show them what they are doing wrong or not doing. You seem to think you can do better? Show me.
I don't believe anyone becomes a police officer or fireman thinking they are going to get rich or even live in a nice big house and drive a new car every few years. I do believe that when they took the job it because they are trying to make the city a better place and they are willing to do the job. However, I don't think anyone took the job knowing they wouldn't get a raise for 10 years. Why not go help them since you think they haven't been doing what you think they should be doing. Natchez is waiting...

I still believe that our community as a whole would greatly benefit from having the S.O. and NPD consolidate. Then the PD would not have to worry about loosing their trained resources to the S.O. and all law enforcement will be on the same pay scale. Plus we would have added patrol where patrol is needed most. The Aldermen and County Supervisors should also be consolidated. These consolidations would save tax payer dollars and make this small community work more efficiently.

I dont know if the suspect will be named or not, it wont be the first time someone has slipped through the system, I recall another incident where an injustice was done to animals(horses) and there was a suspect and they slipped through, I'm referring to the liberty barn fire where I myself had livestock and horses there

csguidry - Sorry to hear you are disabled. The 'things" you pointed out have been done. I know people at NPD and know for a fact it's been done plus other things you don't know about. Go back and read your own post. You are the one running NPD down. You can use a computer so I guess you can use a phone also. If you can help then call them. If you can't do any better then you have no right running down NPD. Yes, crimes happen and when the police get there, even if 12 people saw everything that happened, most times they tell the police thy didn't see a thing. As far as the "suspect" that folks here have been talking about it may or may not be that guy. No one at NPD cares what his name is, how much money he or his family have or anything else. They want this to stop as much or more than the people in Natchez do.

“It is not the young people that degenerate; they are not spoiled till those of mature age are already sunk into corruption.” - Charles de Montesquieu. The suspect in the prior burglaries was reportedly at his residence. This seems extremely convenient and rightly so. I'm sure he was told to stay at home. Because this new culprit was intended to draw public attention elsewhere. The first new attempted burglary happened at 4:25am. Luckily he was scared off. But even an idiot, low life is not going to hang around. 3 and a half hours later the second burglary took place not a half a mile away. No common street trash is going to hang around hiding out in the neighborhood. They are going to run. This person obviously had other means of transportation, a vehicle of some kind that allowed them to vacate the scene and return later. The question is why? Possibly because they were under directions to "try to" burglarize houses in that particular area. Think about it. What did they do after the second robbery? Hit the streets running with a golf bag on their back, carrying power tools, headed to the nearest pawn shop. And there aren't a lot of golf playing, handyman crack dealers that would take that stuff for trade. The original robberies were after cash or jewelry. This new robber was running out of time at 8am and just grabbed a bunch of stuff. Because that was his purpose: to draw attention away from the original suspect. All the jibba jabba in this article sounds like pure rip rap to me.

Regardless I can't say for sure the best things I can do is say that what is or what should happen is that the NPD should Ask around town for any suspicious activity. As concerned citizens all we can hope to do is keep our eyes wide wide open Else we may find ourselves in a turbulent situation where the only truths that can be told are through secret halls and Doorways through which truth and lies will collide. This is a fine, fine city. The only I have ever known. But we can't Galvanize our city against corruption. Hear me now and believe me later, dark is man's soul after it's been sold for money. Instead of money buying happiness, some try to lease it for a bit. But justice will find us all in time. I don't mean to ramble Negatively or come off strangely, but this blog isn't just a venue for petty bickering. Find answers not in the right places.

I wonder why none of the break ins were reported in the records for Tuesday? I also wonder if it's possible to get our local police department some outside help. Considering they are short staffed and are trying hard to catch these idiots, why can't a department from a bigger city (Jackson) or even the Highway Patrol come in to help out? Even if they go undercover and sit in parked cars in neighborhoods. It seems to me that we need all the help we can get. These poor cops can only be at one place at a time and I'm sure they are all drained by now. Or, maybe the sheriff's office could put several investigators on the case.

I think everyone's anxiety has skyrocketed and we are all in panic mode. Our law enforcement is working on it and that is what we need to accept, I guess. It takes time to catch a burlar when there are very few on duty at one time. They are underpaid and have a serious and important job to do. Citizens don't feel protected right now and are venting and talking about it all over town. Everywhere I go someone is talking about "it". I would guess that there are more than one person doing all of this. I have read all of the news articles and am convinced they have an idea, but not enough evidence yet. So I guess we should all pray for our safety as well as theirs while this person is still loose!

Posted by Peace007 (anonymous) on January 24, 2008 at 11:29 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I wouldn't want the police to arrest just anyone, someone who isn't guilty of doing the crimes, just because they are a known crack addict. I hope they get the right person, and have concrete evidence to back it up when they do arrest someone. I wouldn't want an innocent person locked up and the real criminal still out on the streets. I do feel confident that the NPD will catch the one responsible.

i was told eagles that the sheriff's office has been involved from the start it is nice that ASO AND NPD do work together now i remember when they didnot anyway i have been told that the ASO is out in the city also working you ever wonder why the burglar is not in the county its because they would be shot or dead by now wake up Natchez protect your property it is the law now people in the county know they can shoot and ask questions later (just a thought)

Posted by leona (anonymous) on January 30, 2008 at 10:49 a.m. (Suggest removal)

i know people that have been victims and they have never heard a word from the sheriff's dept. i have also heard of others who have been stolen from and they contacted the sheriff's dept. themselves and were told that it was not in their jurisdiction. they live around the block from the sheriff's dept. in a beautiful home. the npd is shorthanded, the sheriff's dept. can't be bothered. what a sad state of affairs.
