Local attorney collapses at jail, later dies

Published Wednesday, February 6, 2008

NATCHEZ — A Natchez attorney visiting a client at the Adams County Jail collapsed Tuesday afternoon and was later pronounced dead.

Sheriff Ronny Brown said it was believed at the time that David Read, 55, had a heart attack.

“He was talking to everybody when he came in,” Brown said. “Then, he just sat on the floor.”

Brown said Read had a heart beat when the ambulance arrived, at approximately 3 p.m., but was pronounced dead at Natchez Regional Medical Center.

Sheriff’s deputies and jailers performed CPR at the scene, Brown said. Brown rode in the ambulance with Read.

Read had his own law office on Commerce Street. Brown said Read served as a court appointed attorney and was frequently at the jail.

“He’s a real good guy,” Brown said. “He was doing his job.”

Oh no, this is terrible! David Read was a very good man first and then a good attorney. I first met him when he was working at a free legal agency. He helped me so much. My prayers go out to his family. He will be missed so much by so many. He even came to my mothers funeral. That's the kind of person he was. I am in shock to hear of this tragedy.

Yes he did live on North Pearl. David was a nice person and a smart attorney who loved his work and enjoyed a friendly game of golf. He will be missed by many.

My prayers go out to Atty. Read's sister, other family and friends, his paralegal Melody Bradley-Brown, Atty. Sanders, and of course Atty. Deborah McDonald. Now, "Mr. Read" is in heaven golfing as much as he wants. We will miss you but you are now with your mother whom you missed so much.

My heart goes out to the family of Mr. Read. I did not know him, personally, but had heard from others before this tragedy that he was a nice man and an Attorney who CARED ABOUT HIS CLIENTS' WELFARE-whether court appointed for them or not, whether they were black or white, whether they were of little means or had pockets of depth.
Death is not the end. For now, he rests-as if asleep. There is HOPE & GRAND PROMISES for the future. John 5:28 & 29. Rev 21:3 & 4.

We also must pray for our Sheriff, how hard it must have been to watch a close friend die. In the last few years, I have grown to see such this wonderful, humorous, dedicated side to our Sheriff and all of those men and women who work under him. I salute them!!!
