Walking preacher found to be a felon
Published Wednesday, February 6, 2008
NATCHEZ — The walking preacher who made a stop in Natchez a few weeks ago is reportedly a convicted murderer and rapist.
James Bowman made a stop in Natchez in early January, speaking at First Baptist Church and spending the night in a space provided by the Adams County Baptist Union.
He told area residents that he walked the country because God told him to.
Locals discovered that Bowman was a fraud before he left town, but the truth kept coming out the more Bowman walked.
Bowman made his way north to Kennett, Mo., and while telling his story at a Sunday service Bowman was unaware the was a retired FBI agent in the audience.
Sensing something was not quite right about Bowman the retired agent contacted his buddy — the sheriff.
The sheriff in turn alerted his son Lt. Deputy Ryan Holder at the Pemiscot County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff told his son Bowman was headed his way.
“So I went to check him out,” Holder said.
Holder said he met with Bowman in the parking lot of a church on Jan. 30.
“I just got a very strange feeling from him,” he said. “A gut feeling.”
And Holder’s gut was right.
After running a background check on Bowman, Holder made some startling discoveries.
“He has been charged and convicted of several major crimes,” he said.
In 1974 Bowman was arrested and convicted on charges of second degree murder.
In 1986 he was convicted on charges of kidnapping and rape.
Bowman served time in prison for both crimes in Colorado.
Bowman’s story, as he told it in Natchez, was one about his salvation from drug addiction and how he subsequently began to wander the United States at God’s behest.
He would normally tell his story to small church congregations after meeting with their pastors.
He was careful not to ask for money directly, instead he told his story in such a way that people felt compelled to give him money, food and lodging.
No one but Bowman knows exactly how much he has made as a drifter.
And when he was in Natchez, no one knew how much of a bad guy he really was.
“He’s a con and a felon,” Holder said.
And worse that being a felon, Holder said, he has a hunch that Bowman is walking all over the country committing other crimes.
And most concerning to Holder is that Bowman’s DNA is not on file anywhere.
“There’s no telling what he has been up to,” he said.

WHOA!! WAIT A MIN! he is a CONVICTED MURDERER AND RAPIST AND KIDNAPPER AND THERE ISN'T A DROP OF THIS SCUM'S DNA IN THE SYSTEM?? THAT'S RETARDED!! surely with this 'retired' FBI his buddy a SHERIFF and the sheriff having a son on whatever force they were smart enough to think of way to get some kind of evidence off this guy!! Did they offer him a coke, cup of water anything?? I WATCH ALOT OF CSI and you can get DNA off a discarded coke can!
WOW... I'M SOOOOO, SOOOO HAPPY NTZ. WAS ABLE TO PICK UP ON SOMETHING BEFORE THIS MAN HAD TIME TO 'ATTACH'
Personally, I would of never let him out of prison for any of the 3 CHARGES I JUST READ ABOUT! We all know darn well he has been committing more and more crimes!! ugh!!

Buttercup, you said it. You watch CSI, and thats the problem!! you don't know what your talking about. There was no DNA in the 70's and early 80's so what are you going to compaire it with. Also, where is your pc for getting a sample. Before you start slamming peple about that YOU think they should of done try to find out what your talking about.
I'm sick of reading this board with the same people rambling on and on about how bad the police are. These peolple need to stop trying to play police on a message board and go try and get hired on if they think they can do such a better job. But they won't

Wow, him being a felon, what a surprise! And him being a preacher has no bearing on other good preachers. He did what HE did. Be careful who you entertain. When his story first broke in the Democrat, I smelled a rat!

You never know who you deal with. Like I say, Never trust a MAN as far as you can see them. The story I heard about this man was too lavish anyway and there is no way I would believe him. But People..... You must not fall into the hands of strangers cause this is exactly what will happen.

Hello Natchez, I am a proud relative of a Natchez Police Officer. Our police officer is very dedicated to his job. Our current police force is understaffed, overworked, underpaid and yet they still choose to serve ALL of the citizens of Natchez. I challenge each of the above naysayers to apply for a job with the police force, attend the training academy and let's just see how many of you would actually graduate from the academy.
Natchez citizens need to join together with Police Chief Mike Mullins and his officers to better Natchez. Join your local Neighborhood Watch Program. Do something constructive with your time.

((areuserious)) if you are tired of seeing the SAME PEOPLE RANT AND RAVE and you have been reading all along to know by now WE ARE going to STILL RANT AND RAVE REGARDLESS TO WHOEVER THROWS A FIT AOUT IT then why read it?
ONE MORE THING!! they may not have had the RIGHT STUFF to track DNA in the 70's or 80's BUT THEY DID take SAMPLES BACK IN THE DAY!! HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF COLD CASES? so why didn't they take samples from this SCUM-BAG????

Perhaps he is trying to make a change in his life. Maybe God changed him. Now he wants to go preach about not doing these bad things since he has experienced them himself. "Do not kidnapp and/or rape or you will be punished by GOD!!!"
Do "walking preachers" carry resumes?

Mamatj, you aren't going to get a positive reaction from us by saying "Do something constructive with your time". By stating this, you are inferring that we do not do anything constructive with our time. Choose your words in a more polite manner next time and more people may consider your comment.
As for the NPD, yes they may be underworked and overpaid, but my experience with them shows me a majority of them are impolite, arrogant, and racist.
I have lived on other communities where police officers do NOT act in such a manner (Vidalia).

Obamayamama--I think you are one to something. Maybe God told him to do all those things...and now God changed her mind and doesn't want bad things done.
He doesn't carry a resume...he carries commandments.

Commandments and criminal records... maybe in the same folder.
This guy goes to show that anybody can say they are whatever (Doctor, Undercover Police Officer, Preacher) and most people are gullible enough to believe it.

Point! The people in Natchez that had dealings with this subject, took him in HOOK, LINE, and SINKER! Did not know him at all! some Americans are just to soft Hearted and you see what happens? Point! As I have said in many other postings, you must support your local NPD and your ACSO also!

Thank you Mr. Rushing for your comments on supporting your local law enforcement officers.
Ms. Obama, Doing something constructive with your time would mean supporting your local officers, deputies, neighborhood watch programs, etc. I'm sorry you have not gotten a good impression of Natchez. Maybe one day you'll have the pleasure of meeting our police officer. A true gentleman who loves his job, loves Natchez and also serves his country.

I am so glad that he did not have an opportunity to do any awful things here in my beloved hometown. I wonder is there anyway of getting the article/story to America's Most Wanted maybe get the word out and he might turn up to be brought to justice for all of his wrongdoings!

I am not denying that these types of offices exist in Natchez. And I also a few of the A.C. Sheriff Deputies of whom are similar in character. BUT from my experiences in Natchez (born and raised here), I would rather be across the bridge where the atmosphere is more comfortable.

((prayforachange))...he was already incarcerated for his crimes. The article say that someone's gut feeling tell him that this preacher is involved in other crimes. However, a gut feeling doesn't hold up in court.
You don't have to worry about this guy doing bad things in Natchez...there are plenty already there to do bad things.
((Mamatj))...Obama already met a NPD officer and they said it wasn't good.
one question--Are you saying that only true gentlemen love their jobs, love natchez and serve their country?
WOW...i guess there aren't a lot of true gentlemen. I hit 2 out of 3...does that make me only a gentlemen and not a true one?

I know I was most likly get slammed for this but think about what I am going to say. I do not want anyone to be riping anyone else off. But what did the walking preacher do that was wrong. Not tell everyone everything about himself? Do each of us tell everyone everything about ourselves.
My question is ..is he saved, has he changed his life and does anyone know for sure that he was not told from God to walk the roads and talk about Jesus.
It seems and maybe i read it wrong or i do not know everything as I did not sit in a service and listen to him, that he was a very bad person in the past and was then covicted and then served his time. Now did he ask for things from people fooled them into giving to him. I bet their are people all over town asking for things from people and telling them all the facts.
i would like to hear from some of the preachers and some of the people in the services locally that this man spoke at and let them tell what this man say and ask for or didn't ask for. I would like to hear from the local Ministers that meet this amn and heard this, how did they feel when he spoke, was God using him or not. These men are suppose to be God's choosen and they should have know if this man was doing something wrong.
i do not know this man that walks the road and I did not listen to him, but if all anyone has is he was convicted of something and he served his time for it, then what is the problem... I know the rape word came up. He still served his time..OK, I know he is lying, ... But I would like to know is he lying or is he just not telling everything and if that is the case, the jails in Adams County are going to be full tonight....the newspaper do not tell everything, the public officials do not tell everything and what are they hidding...What are the leaders and county lawyers hidding... I bet it was some people and maybe some ministers sitting in the pews on those days this man was speaking that was not telling everyone, everything about themselves.
I will close with this....has anyone looked into all the places this Man has walked and all the churchs this man has spoken at, what were the results, were people saved, what fruit was left behind, because of his words were lives changed.
If he is leaving the churchs in turmoil, causeing problems between the people in the church, and leading people away from Jesus then that would be different. But still I come back to this, "Why didn't some of these men and women of God that was supposing to be in the service not told by GOd that this man was not sent by God. Why did they stand up in the service and say, Man God did not sned you here and you are a fraud and I am going to throw you out of this church, Sir, and run you out of this town for my GOD has told me you are not of HIM.

Thank goodness we as citizens we're able to stop the cold hearted "con, murder" before he could do more damage to our communiuty. ARE we sure is out of the area? I fell sorry for all the innocent people that were draw to his scam. I hope they don't blame themselves because cons can convince the wisest people, they are usually well street taught cons. In these days & times you cannot trust anyone & sometimes not even the people you know can be trusted. Very sad but it's true. All we can do now is pray they will be caught before some else is conned or much worse murdered.
Another off the wall thing I though about was people from everywhere read the Natchez Drmocrat & can read all the comments about how afraid we are & think this is a great place to come do their dirty work. Right now we are at the mersey of the police which seen not to be doing much good.

((notfromnatchez)) AMEN TO YOUR COMMENT ABOUT 'ALOT' OF CHURCHES!!
((blindink)) sorry i got distracted about the middle of your 'article' but i did read where you said something about the idiot raping and he served his time?? WHATEVER! WHAT ABOUT THE 2ND DEGREE MURDER CHARGE AND THAT RAPE VICTIM? the person he killed has served time being dead soo why isn't the vitcim alive and free to walk around then?? and the rape vitcim?? Put yourself in that person life for about 5 mins. Since the scum-bag 'served' his time then the vitcim should be all fine and great with out the mental and emotional scars that they probably have to face EVERY SINGLE DAY FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIFE!!!!!!
Posted by ChooseOrLose (anonymous) on February 6, 2008 at 2:31 p.m. (Suggest removal)
One of the problems I see here is that convincted rapists must register in the area that they reside. This man should not be allowed to walk from town to town, because no one will know to watch their children and themselves a little extra closely. I do believe if he is going to go and speak in churches about how he has reformed, that he should be telling the truth, the WHOLE truth, and nothing but the truth, so help him God!
I am not a trusting person. I am a caring person, and a loving person, but because I am a smart person, I have learned to be mindful of myself and my surroundings at all times. In this world we live in, we encounter both good and evil. Often evil disguises itself very well, but it says in our bible that we should not judge. I try my best to not judge, but be mindful so that I protect myself, and one day when I have them, I will protect my children.
Always try to get all the facts. Don't let your guard down. If you are like me, then you can listen to your heart.
I would be interested in hearing a report of all the towns and churches he has visited. I would like to hear stories of personal encounters. I would like to know if anything strange, good or bad, has happened in these towns where we can see if there is a pattern going.

I've been in services before where guest evangelist would come, give his/her testimony, and then the resident minister would ask for a love offering...and this is how the evangelist made his livelihood. Some of those guest evangelists did tell some horrifying tales.
If I remember correctly what I read previously about this walking evangelist, he told tales that were unbelievable to some, and they did see if they could check out his stories, and that's where the problems came into play. When he was called-out about his stories, he disappeared thru the backdoor; no adios...see ya later alligator, no nothing. And that's my opinion of why he is being considered a con-man.

Freedom42, have you ever studied religion?
Why don't you do that now and come back to answer the following questions:
1. What do the Koran and the Bible have in common?
2. What do Mohamad and Jesus Chris have in common?
3. What does Mecca and Jerusalem have in common?
If you answered everything, you are correct!
The only difference is that Mohamad existed 600 years after Jesus Christ.

I don't need to study to answer your questions, and there are quite a few differences. To start with it is correctly spelled Quran, not Koran. Mecca is the holy city to muslims as Jerusalem is to Christians. However Christian can pray anywhere at anytime, we do not have to face any certain direction, because God is with us always. mohamad was a prophet who died. Jesus Christ is the only son of God who died for us and was resurrected. He lives in a spiritual body today. Now your turn:
What is the Kaaba? How did Muhammad treat Jews and Christians during his lifetime? What is the Hadith, the Shariah, the Sunnah?
I suggest you both read "Islam: What Every Christian Should Know" by Bassam M. Chedid. And please don't insult my beliefs by saying Christians and Muslims are the same.

Oh, well pardon me. You insult my beliefs for saying that the Christian god is the ONLY God. In fact, how many people's beliefs are you insulting when you say these things? That is what is wrong with organized religion, it is either one way or the other. And the believers are the most selfish people of all!
God is everywhere in everything and I do not have to pray to IT each night out of my own selfishness. I don't ask for forgiveness each night so I will not go to Hell. That is, in fact, what seems to be the main reason why this religion is believed in; because people are too scared to know where they are going when they die, so they choose Christianity so they feel "safe" thoughout this life on earth.

You religious people, you always have an answer for everything, and the answer is always God. Yet you ignore the evidence stored away inside and on the surface of the Earth exceeding 3.8 billion years.
I am sure you have an answer for this too right? This because God put it here huh? God made science.
I sure hope the next generation will be more enlightened to the REAL facts of life, not some man made beliefs that were created to enable order and discipline in a world or absolute chaos.

Obamayamama...3.8 billion years?!?!?! Is that how old the Earth is? Did you google that or are you some kind of geolgist/scientific person?
You make a good point. However, I think what you should have said is that the answer for everthing GOOD is because of God...the bad stuff...well that wasn't God. At least that's the thoughts of a lot of people.

I don't pray to IT everynight either. I pray to Him without ceasing. It is certainly your right to pray to whatever, or whoever you want to believe. I personally never said any different. Notfromnatchez knows that, because he and I have spoken of this before. He wants to believe in a goddess - fine. It's MY belief you are wrong, its YOUR belief I am wrong. Leave it at that, and I'll let God sort it out in the end. And btw, I don't ignore the evidence, I just see it in a different way. I also look forward to seeing God and Jesus when I die, so you can hardly say I am scared of it, but I bet you are.

Notfromnatchez...3.8 billion is the oldest form of rock or evidence of life on Earth.
Freedom42... you say to let each of us have our beliefs and leave it at that. Then you continue to chime in with your own personal opinions. I am not scared of dying. I embrace when I am allowed to exit this life and move on. For I know what I have learned so far in my internal existance will be used again.
It is ashamed your mind is so closed to the possibility of anything other than what religion has taught you.
God is everywhere, everything, everyone. "He" is both and neither good or bad. All that religion does is condemn this. You should try reading "Conversations with God" by John Walsh. He explains that it is not about religion but rather LOVE... and that is all that matters.
Posted by freedom42 (anonymous) on February 6, 2008 at 5:01 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Notfromnatz - I think that is the right time frame as far as carbon dating goes. I know it is a stretch for some people (read us Christians) but for me it is just one of those things I'll ask about when I get there. I once heard a bible scholar say that there were 2 creations. The 1st one was in Gensis 1:1, the second one was Gensis 1:2. Supposedly the phrase "the earth was without form" should read "the earth became without form" because God destroyed it and remade it. That is supposed to explain the dinosaurs, etc.
Not sure about that, but with God all things (good and bad) are possible. So ya'll have a good day for what's left of it, and I'll go pray for you!

Yeah, I have read part of that book. It is his made up conversations, new-age, whatever you want to call it. It is not the word of God. God is in everything, and it is Not about organized religion. You are certainly correct in that. It is about obeying Gods rules - Love your neighbor as yourself - and your first post on this subject showed that Muslims do not love their neighbors. No, you are the one with the closed mind, not me.

Well, do you think Muslims do love their neighbors? Isn't whats going on in the Middle East a prime example?
My mind is far from closed. I am always opened to NEW ideas, not ideas that began 2000 years ago.
One thing I have learned about paying taxes all of my years is that Law Enforcement doesn't always get the job done much less do so in a correct manner.
Just because I do not follow the typical "Natchez laws" of giving in to what everybody else is doing and going to a fancy church to study religion (because that's where all the wealthy people in Natchez go) doesn't mean I am insane.

I wanted to try to agree with you Freedom42 about how God is love, but now I see you are not unbiased to outsiders who are not christian.
Just that in itself is wrong. Go to church and PRAY! Keep living under that shield that you believe protects you through life.

There you go again, I thought we had agreed that God is love, but He is also just and rightous. Also we had agreed that we don't have to go to church to pray, organized religion is not necessary to belief, God is all around us and always here. I was simply laughing because you don't want to believe something that has been found to be true for 2000 years but would rather latch on to something "new", but everything you say has been said for over 2000 years.

Let me pose this question:
Where do the members from The Westboro Baptist Church fall in the grand scheme of Christianity?
Old money--What the Hell? I am glad to see you showed your backside. The bible shouldn't be treated literal. Maybe you should use some of your old money to pay for psychiatric evaluations. I know you won't like this so have your DA son-in-law to contact me AGAIN.
Freedom--i don't worship a goddess...i just referred to God as female to get people to question me. LOL.

I can't help but agree completely with freedom42. God did create all things good and bad and gave man free will to make choises in his pitiful short life here after the fall. your path in life is of your own doing and you can change your life with God's help if you accept his terms. BELIEVE in His Son. I am not and probably will never be a supporter of Musliums. I've seen too many examples of their disreguard for human life (especially women and children). Just look at the two mentally handycapped women they strapped bombs to and blew them up (remotely)in a crowded area. Great Love Huh.

Wow.. Obamayamama and Notfromnatchez - you're not going to get anywhere here. It's not that you don't have good, valid, realistic and rational points. The problem is, you're coming up against something that's not going to budge. Don't worry.. it's not going to be that way forever.
To the rest of you..
Thank you all for making me feel so good tonight about registering with the Democratic party and getting an education that is thoroughly rooted in hard sciences. You guys go ahead and rant all you darn well please about how science is wrong, and everything is as you see it in your narrow view (which IS a narrow one, even within the confines of your own religion), and your crazy, outdated ideas about how all people should live, despite your limited education and world view.. yeah.. whatever, have fun with this message board.
When someone you know gets cancer or suffers from a neurological or developmental condition, go ahead and pray, but the science is going to be what saves your loved one. If you could pray and leave that person out on a rock with faith enough to be secure in the knowledge that God will make them all better, you sure as heck wouldn't be taking them to the hospital where applied science is what's used to see them through.
People will tell you that Mississippi isn't like anywhere else in the country, and for that, I am thankful. Nice to be out of town.

Yes, I strongly believe in God and I start my day off with him and end my night with him. God said that he will never leave us nor forsake us, SO LET GOD HANDLE THAT!

I only read 10 responses in, but if this man supposedly got "saved" and God told him to walk the country talking about Jesus, don't you think God would have insisted he be a little more HONEST?? Wouldn't his message have come across better if he had stated he had committed murder and rape and s a truly changed man, just look and see he is walking the country spreading His word??
No, because his glorious story gets more money, therefore he is dishonest and NOT doing God's work, no matter what his intentions may appear to be. Being dishonest in the first place means he is lying, something God DOESN'T like, which is something I'm sure all of you regular church goers can testify to. Good point, no?

Secondly, the Muslims do NOT love their neighbors. And terrorist suicide bombers aren't all mentally insane. Trust me on this one. I went to a seminar type thing on this issue. SOME so-called Christians do not love their neighbors. I have seen people go to church every sunday and STILL refer to black people as "N." (I will not say the word because I do not LIKE that word. But you know what I mean). So they don't love their neighbors either. But since they are Christians and go to church we should automatically assume that they are good examples??? BTW all of you out there know that that type of person is more than just a minority in the South. I am in no way speaking out against one group, very race does it. As long as Christians (and other religions) practice racism, which is in mostly everyone in some form or another, then NONE of us love our neighbors. Anyone who dislikes someone so much they get into verbal fights against them and tend to hate them, are not loving their neighbors. That means some people on here. Hypocrites, ya think?

I've enjoyed reading all of your posts regarding religion.
If anyone is reading this, these are my unbiased and uneducated on the subject thoughts. I have not studied ANY religion, though I would like to study all of them. I do not just believe what is told to me, because each person has their own beliefs, and would like you to believe as they do. I believe what I have witnessed before my very eyes. I have faith in God because of all that he has shown me and blessed me with.
I do believe that we should not judge, therefore I do not judge the people who worship "Allah". I often wonder is he not the same man by a different name in a different language. Who are you to say that Muslims do NOT love their neighbors? Do you believe they are born with this hate in their hearts, or is it a learned behavior that they are taught, by the people who have been taught the same thing from adolesence. Have you met every last one of them and asked them if they hate their neighbor? Do you want to be stereotyped by them and what they think of the Christians? My boyfriend is in Iraq as we speak. When I have any questions about the Muslim and/or Islamic cultures I ask him because I know he has studied them throroughly. I received an email last week regarding the changes of the law in Denmark because of the Muslims. I forwarded it to him and asked his opinion. He said though he does not know much about Denmark, this email I received is probably based on fact, because even the most peaceful Muslims do believe that Isreal is a demon state and must be destroyed in the most violent ways. The email says that they are moving into countries, such as our own, receiving our government handouts (yes, the ones that you and I are helping pay when we pay our taxes), and when they get here, even if they are peaceful people, they still want OUR laws to change to reflect their own. I think our laws should change to where we do not allow them into our society so easily. We should not hand out our money so easily when we need it so badly here ourselves. There is so much with our government that I disagree with. I believe we should follow Denmarks lead and change our policies immediately. At the same time, I will not look down on the Muslims for their beliefs, especially since I know so little about them. I will only form opinions on each individual by their actions. I refuse to hate them for what they have been taught by their parents.

Oh, I forgot to mention...I thank God everyday for the freedoms that I enjoy here because I am an AMERICAN WOMAN!!! Thank you to all of our troops who defend this country. I don't agree with all of what our government does, and I question their motives, but I am thankful for the freedoms I do have here. I can be an independent woman and live a happy and fruitful life if that's what I choose to make it. I can't imagine being forced to live the way the Muslim women live. My heart goes out to them. Thank you to each and every soldier who has served time carrying out the duties they are delegated by our government. I pray for our government leaders that the decisions they make are unselfish, and not for their own personal gain.

We as Americans are extremely lucky and we should not give all the credit to God for this. We should give it to our ancestors just as our children and grandchildren should do.

It is clear from several comments that many strugle with organized religion. I struggle too. Pure Religion is legalistic, cold and lifeless. Christianity on the other hand is more than religion and is backed up by historical evidence of a living God and a resurected Savior, Jesus Christ. It is my daily walk with Christ and the leadership of his spirit that makes the joyful difference in my life. No, I am not perfect, just forgiven. And at the end of my life if some still do not believe the message of salvation through Christ, I personally have still enjoyed a much better life trying to love God and help others where I can.
Now, back to the subject at hand.
This man is not a preacher, but a convicted criminal and a con artist. He is simply using churches and good hearted people to line his pockets and give him a free ride across the country. His stories did not include repentence, forgiveness, or a personal salvation experience. If his life was truly changed by God, he would now be telling the truth about his past, present and future, instead of telling his outlandish lies to gain sympathy and money from caring churches.

I believe Preacher is talking about the Bible, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and many other writings which have been found that corralate the teachings of Christan history. I have had to have a serious conversation with God today. If I truely love my neighbor, which I think means everyone, then I would not stand by and watch his home burn to the ground. Even if that neighbor told me his home would not burn, he didn't believe in fire, and to leave him alone. The only thing I could do in that case is call the fire department, and then if he refused to accept their help that would be their problem. There is, after all, only so much one can do to help if the neighbor refuses to believe you are trying to help. So I now turn all on this blog over to my Fire Chief and in those words dreaded most by the Devil, I will pray for you. And I am not doing you a favor, I am doing myself one by refusing to take any more part in this.

The bible was written by men LONG after Jesus had died. They are getting their stories four or five times removed from original witness. So how often can stuff be said between people before the information gets way off. SO I ask again...WHAT HISTORICAL EVIDENCE? I still haven't heard any empirical evidence.
Peace--i was wondering the same thing. Isn't he a nut? He probaly sits at home staring at some video from a camera he has set up outside to watch his neighbor or the neighborhood gas station. The only money he has is food stamps. Maybe he should be called Oldfoodstamp.

Preacher - you are right. My parents let me make the decision based on my own experiences what my religion will be. I will always keep an open mind and take everyone's beliefs into consideration. I know there is a God. I feel him. I see him. I hear him. Sometimes I can even smell him. I admit that I do not know for sure myself if there was indeed a Jesus Christ, but I will never say for sure that there was not. My heart tells me to have faith. It's the people out there who take their beliefs to the extent of trying to use them to justify their wrong doings, or the people who try to push those beliefs off on others. It's the people who take the bible or other religions out of context and try to use it to their own advantage. It's the people who play the "God card" instead of just debating the issue at hand. Their are people who will find believers and pull them into their church and make them feel welcome and comfortable, while they have their own selfish motives. The Catholic priests who have been convincted of raping little boys, these men were trusted. The Waco Texas incident... the list goes on and on why I choose to not be part of an organized religion. I respect all people and their beliefs, all religions. I embrace all the versatilities that make our world go round.

Joel Osteen does nothing more than capitalize on fluffy common sense and throws god in there to get money from the churchies. He basically preaches nothing more than, "God is nice, I'm nice, you're nice... Let's all just be nice!"
Maybe they should name one of the new Riverboat Casinos THE JOEL OSTEEN...it fits. He takes your money and you walk out empty. PERFECT MATCH.

notfrom, he has to accept donations from his congregation and from those whom choose to send them to him via the mail, etc in order to continue to broadcast his message. Not much is free these days. But you can go to his website and watch his sermons free of charge. If his message turns you off...click the little red button in the top right corner...if his message encourages you, listen to a few more of them. If you choose to send him money, it is because you felt the urge and acted upon it...not because he asked in any of those sermons...he probably passed around the bucket during the service, but it wasn't broadcast. All and any are welcome to go to his church.
There is nothing wrong with seeking encouragement, strength, hope in tomorrow bringing joy, peace of mind and if his message can do it for some...I hope they will at least give it a try by listening to his services. There are certainly enough problems and people in this world trying to bring each other down. Don't let the enemy still your joy. Try to be around people who will encourage you, not bring you down. Choose to be happy.

Debating the Bible is not my job. Believing it and preaching it is. It stands on its own merits and is supported by history, archeology and science.
And I hate to say it, but Olsteen only wants your money and his name in lights. He never says anything with any substance and "preaches" only a feel good religion. He avoids any controversial subjects and does not offend any religion so they all will send him their money. He is a good motivational speaker, but only uses the Bible to his advantage. Pay close attention to what he says and you will not hear any solid doctrine or committments. Listen to David Jeremiah instead.

What's wrong with being non-denominational? What's wrong with preaching in a way to give motivation and using the bible to one's advantage to backup that motivational message? What's wrong with feeling good about religion?
If you are truly a preacher, then why are you anonymous? What is your church and religious preferance? Where are you located?
I will listen to David Jeremiah too. I had never heard of him until I read your comment.
On the other hand, I did attend Lakewood Church once, when Joel's father was the minister many years ago. And I did attend a concert at the Summit prior to it becoming Lakewood church. So, I know that it isn't the easiest place to attend. Just finding your car in the parking garage after the service can be a big deal if you forget what level you parked it on. We walked for hours looking for our car after the concert, lol. But then I do that after shopping at WalMart sometimes, too. Luckily for me, my new vehicle has a key remote with one of those nice little horn buttons I can push which helps me locate my vehicle in the parking lot. Ok, I know, I'm rambling. But, my point is, if Joel Osteen can encourage people to find hope, then more power to him. I like his messages, the music, and the show.

We all need hope, help, and encouragement in this country...if Joel Osteen can get the younger people to come to his church or to listen to his message...more power to him. Perhaps, if some of us would stop downgrading other religions and do more encouraging, we would have less school shootings...

A defendant in the Louisiana "Jena Six" case was arrested after allegedly slamming a student's head into a bench at his new school in Texas, police said.
The defendant, Bryant R. Purvis, 19, was arrested on a charge of assault causing bodily injury Wednesday after an altercation at Hebron High School. It began because Purvis believed a student had flattened his tires, Sgt. John Singleton said.
Purvis was released from jail Thursday morning.
According to a police report, the student felt Purvis come behind him and "grab his neck with one hand and begin to choke him." Purvis then said, "Don't you ever mess with my car again" and slammed the student's head into the bench of a table and walked away, the report said. The student's left eye was injured, but Singleton didn't know whether he needed medical attention after seeing the school nurse.
School district declined to comment on details of the incident.
Purvis was one of six black Jena High School students initially charged with attempted murder after a 2006 assault on a white student. Charges were reduced, but the original counts caused complaints of harsh, racially motivated prosecution that led to 20,000 people marching in Jena.
Purvis faces aggravated second-degree battery and conspiracy to commit battery charges in the Jena case and is set for trial in March. If convicted of both charges, he faces up to 22½ years in prison.
The Texas case had nothing to do with race, Singleton said.
"We don't believe there's any racial motivation behind it," he said. "It was basically a misdemeanor assault that occurred during an altercation." LAST TIME HE WAS BEING PICKED ON OR SO IT WAS SAID...HE,S REALLY A GOOD KID. NEXT TIME HE MIGHT BREAK THEIR NECK IF HE SLAMS HARDER AND KICKS HARDER.

What's wrong with being non-denominational? You don't believe anything strong enough to take a stand on it and it gives people false hope. When you accept all beliefs, it means that you do not have any solid convictions of your own. I stand on the Rock and will accept no other.

The religious God is based on fear. Say all that you want, but the tangible truth exists. If you ask "What is the tangible evidence?" You answer lies in the Dead Sea Scrolls. These scrolls contain reasonings behind stories in the bible. I know this only by a very well respected professor of whom had studied with a Greek graduate student who was writing a thesis on the Dead Sea Scrolls.
Believe in whatever you want, but do not try to make someone else feel uncomfortable, unsafe, or unsure of their decisions. FOR YOU WILL BE JUDGED ONE DAY (because you should FEAR your God).

I hold on to the hem of Jesus' robe, so that when a wave comes I won't be washed off the rock. I'd be willing to bet you money that David Jeremiah accepts donations just like Joel Osteen, and Tony Evans does as well. That's what they do. But nothing turns me off more to a preacher than one who preaches against other religions. For example, when I attended a Baptist church and the preacher spoke against Catholics, Mormons, and other Christian faiths, it just didn't feel right to me. As I recall this conversation between Jesus and John (Mark ix. 38). John said to Jesus, “Master, we saw a man casting out demons in thy name, and we forbade him, because he did not follow us.” But Jesus answered, “Forbid him not. No one shall work a deed of might in my name and then deny me presently; for he who is not against us, is for us.”

We need to fast and pray if we find our faith and closeness with God being attacked, then we will be able to exercise our faith when praying for others and see them set free in the name of Jesus.

John 10: 7Therefore Jesus said again, "I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.[a] He will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
11"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.
14"I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. 17The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. 18No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father."
19At these words the Jews were again divided. 20Many of them said, "He is demon-possessed and raving mad. Why listen to him?"
21But others said, "These are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?"

Obamayamama--I will respect your wishes and NOT pray for you...You're welcome.
Peace007 if you want to pray, i need help with my golf game. God must surely be able to handle such a simple request...with all the famine, murders, and other horrible crimes he is ignoring. He should have time for my golf game.

To each his own I suppose...I found this article about Joel Osteen; just thought I'd share.
He has not taken a salary from his Houston megachurch for two years. He owns one house — the same one he and his wife, Victoria, have lived in for 13 years — and until recently he drove a 9-year-old car he inherited from his late father. Osteen pays his own hotel bills, and there is no private jet.

Peace007---what are you thoughts about the Westboro Baptist Church? They are Chrisitians like yourself.

Ok, I followed some links and came up with this - what Osteen doesn't know, he can't believe in - http://www.apologeticsindex.org/229-joel...
Believe me I have nothing personally against the man, never heard him, but this makes him sound like an Amway dealer I knew years ago. "Name it and claim it" don't work that way.

Joel Osteen is nothing more than a plain old motivational speaker. But what sets him apart is he was smart enough to know if he threw in some "God is Love" talk with his motivational speeches, he would have a much bigger audience. A much bigger audience = more profits. Saying he is a minister = possibility of tax breaks that plain old motivational speakers don't get.
He's smart enough to know all of this. And if he has inspired people to live a happier life, then good for him. However, I hope people can see him for what he really is -- just another motivational speaker. Not a minister.

Oh Freedom, you are so observant! Osama and Obama are so similar! It's funny that you noticed! But... is there a difference, do you and your people pray for Osama also?
I want no quarrel between you and I, I respect where you contribute your love. And almost just like all Christians, Love is all that matters! Have a lovely weekend (without having to pray that things will get better)!

No love is not all that matters - that's Osteens talk, not mine. And life is wonderful for me, hope it is for you. Blessings.

notfrom, never heard of it til I read your comment. I did the google tho...seems there are three...which one are you talking about and what makes you think Joel Osteen is working for them? Joel Osteen took over his daddy's church which is non-denominational.
According to someone I know who used to attend John Osteen's church, he was Baptist before his daughter Lisa was born crippled. John studied the bible and thought he could use bible scriptures to heal the child. The church wouldn't hear of anything such as that...so John went out and began his own non-denominational church...healed the daughter and the rest is history. I don't know if it was Westboro Church he was with, or not.

Sorry ((Peace007)) I don't think Joel Osteen healed his daughter. It was God's will for her to walk & just by chance her Daddy was praying. I don't believe in devine healing. I'm sure I will get nasty feedback for this but it's just my belief. Now Osteen is "smilling big" as millions pour in to him for healing.

You are right, Joel didn't heal his daughter. His daddy, John Osteen, prayed for and received healing for Joel's sister Lisa...is the story I've heard. I agree that it was God's will, but what if her daddy had not prayed...would she still have been healed..is the question...did he by praying bring the daughter into the light so that God would acknowledge that she needed healing? Ask and ye shall receive...if it is God's will that you need what ye ask.

i hae met this guy in person, gave him a ride to a church, and sit and talked him him for hours. He seems really nice he told us about life growing up and his life before his son of god days. The man might have done things like this in his past, but he is now a son of god. So, what ever cop said he is still doing it, im still alive now and i spent over 3 hours talking with this man. He said a prayer and all with us before i left. Plus i dont believe that he is still committing crimes, hes walking across american to spead his word of god, sleeping out side, not eating and all that. I believe in him.
