The police, I used to be their biggest advocate and while I still say they deserve more pay, I aso see where much improvement is needed on the force.

Good questions, ((peaceout)). Wasn't another young man shot in the mouth last week? Looks like the victim at this scene lost a lot of blood. I hope they both recover.

With all the shootings and blood shed, I think it would be appropriate to thank Dr. Charles Drew for his contributions to American history and the world. His work with blood plasma and blood transfusions has saved countless lives. In observance of Black History Month, we should pay homage to him.

Charles Drew (1904-1950) was born on June 3, 1904 in Washington, D.C. Charles Drew excelled in academics and sports during his graduate studies at Amherst College in Massachusetts. Charles Drew was also a honor student at McGill University Medical School in Montreal, where he specialized in physiological anatomy.

Charles Drew researched blood plasma and transfusions in New York City. It was during his work at Columbia University where he made his discoveries relating to the preservation of blood. By separating the liquid red blood cells from the near solid plasma and freezing the two separately, he found that blood could be preserved and reconstituted at a later date.

Charles Drew's system for the storing of blood plasma (blood bank) revolutionized the medical profession. Dr. Drew also established the American Red Cross blood bank, of which he was the first director, and he organized the world's first blood bank drive, nicknamed "Blood for Britain". His official title for the blood drive was Medical Director of the first Plasma Division for Blood Transfusion, supplying blood plasma to the British during World War II. The British military used his process extensively during World War II, establishing mobile blood banks to aid in the treatment of wounded soldiers at the front lines. In 1941, the American Red Cross decided to set up blood donor stations to collect plasma for the U.S. armed forces.

After the war, Charles Drew took up the Chair of Surgery at Howard University, Washington, D.C. He received the Spingarn Medal in 1944 for his contributions to medical science. Charles Drew died at the early age of 46 from injuries suffered in a car accident in North Carolina.

The investigative powers of the NPD could not have brought this young man back to life. The community around him could have helped avoid this situation. If you see one of these dice games going on, call it in then. If you have a child, make sure he has no weapons or hang with ones who do. This is two shootings at dice games in two weeks. Turn a blind eye to these crimes and you help kill the young men!!!!

I AM missing something, I guess--where in this story does it say the young man died?

In fairness to the local police, they are not "CSI Natchez." I imagine they don't have a TV series budget and access to all the investigative "toys" they might desire. From my admittedly limited observation of the NPD over the past five years, they don't strike me as any less competent than their larger-city counterparts, at least where I've lived.

And, frankly, this particular incident, while tragic, does not truly merit a whole lot of investigative time and effort on the part of the police. No matter who pulled the trigger, the young man put himself into a situation, an environment, in which "stuff" like that happens, apparently with some regularity.

The best police department in the world, with unlimited funding and access to all the cutting-edge investigative tools, cannot prevent an 18-year-old man from participating in dangerous activities, whether such activity be bungee-jumping or playing dice or going to church on Sunday, whatever.

We always look for someone else to blame. When bad things happen, we look for a "culprit," or, in this case, demand that the police find the culprit for us. Whatever happened to the concept of "personal responsibility," of accepting consequences for our own actions?

The Natchez Police Department has limited resources, I'm sure. How do we want the NPD to spend those resources? On investigating what likely was a tragic accident, no matter the circumstances (I doubt anyone at that dice game went into it planning to shoot a gun), or on fundamentals, basic stuff like making us feel safer in our homes by investigating, and hopefully solving, the rash of obviously premeditated "home invasions?" I would rather see them spending their time ticketing people who refuse to yield to emergency vehicles (so prevalent here that you would think the law said "Do NOT yield to ambulances," rather than the opposite).

To all y'all who want a "better" police department? Volunteer to pay higher taxes. Put your money where your mouth is, as the saying goes.

My sincerest sympathy goes out to the famiy to the young man who died. May God's love comfort you durring your time of grief.

I hope that the police arrest the first shooter soon. Assult with a deadly weapon is a serious crime. Severe consiquences are in order.

Why was there a dice game going on? Why was there a gun on the ground at an illeagle game? Why were these young men hanging around a game that a gun was present in full view at a game? Where has raising our children with a little common sense gone?

So many questions and no answers.

It is my hope that young people, and some adults, understand that whatever crowd or circle you associate yourself with, it will bring about an assimilation. Unfortunately, so many of our young men end up in jail or dead. Such a tradegy for them and the parents who loved them unconditionally and did the very best they could do.

Good morning, ((Incognito))!!!!!!!! Over on the article about the celebration of Black History, I've decided to post something every day to honor a Black American who made a significant achievement or major contribution to all of our lives -- in America and the world.

I thought it was only fitting to post a tidbit of information here about Dr. Charles Drew. I'm sure a lot of people aren't aware of the impact his work has had on their lives. He's truly an American hero!!!! I encourage others to do the same. In honor of Black History Month, post little know facts of the contributions Blacks have made. Perhaps we all will learn something we did not know -- enlightenment is a wonderful thing.

As a matter of fact, I think I'll add another little known fact:

Lee Burridge invented the type writing machine which led to the modern day typewriter/keyboard we use today. He's just one in many Black Americans who have made contributions that have made our lives easier or improved it in one way or another.

So, as we churn out these comments, we should think of Lee Burridge, a Black American inventor, whose invention helped to make it all possible.

oh Im not blaming parents! I had a mother and father who loved me and raised me in the proper way. Mom was always at home when I got home from school, dad was home most weekends. I had a drug problem, drug to church on Sunday and Wednesday, drug on family outings and family reunions. I was tought right from wrong. I never wound up in jail, but not for lack of heading down the wrong path. I have no one to blame but myself and my whole attitude and outlook upon life!

But we have become a society where it's always someone elses fault! It's never my fault, or my child's fault! We as a society have caused this! It was not until I owned up to my own responsibilty for my own actions was I able to start living life as a responsible human being.

Every time I read comments from morons like this ntzmom, I am so glad I left Natchez. I really loved Natchez when I was there (22 yrs), but the longer I am away, the more I realize how far behind MOST of the people in that town are. People like ntzmom, who have nothing better to do than to be posting their negative comments on every article in the ND at 2:30 AM!?!?! How miserable it must be to have nothing better to do at 2am. Instead of hiding behind the computer, get out there at 2 am and HELP the NPD find these criminals and investigate these "incidents". If you think crime is bad in Natchez, come to Jackson for a couple days. You have no idea what a crime problem is. Throughout time, people have killed people, people have stolen from each other, etc. This will go on as long as mankind exists. What makes you think the NPD is powerful enough to stop it. Get a life and do something constructive instead of negatively commenting on EVERY article in the ND.

Is there some kind of new game in town like a Russian Roulette to the jaw? Maybe if you throw a certain number on the dice you have to pull the trigger hoping the bullet is not in the chamber? Just a thought which occured to me. Teenage boys (men if you prefer) like to try to live of the fast side, I know that from experience, but don't try to blame the NPD for this one. I have seen kids run from a traffic accident when they were the passenger, just from fright. We humans have a flight or fight defense built into us, and if you have been in trouble before, your first instinct is going to be to run before the police get there.

Give me a break. NPD and other police departments are not CSI on TV. They have to have time to investigate and collect evidence and make sure it is enough to hold someone for trial for a conviction. If not, what his face above who was first to criticize, would be downing the rest of the Natchez lawyers and judges and Juries for letting someone go. Get a grip! Why does everyone have to judge and be negative so quickly. How about a little support? I am sure these officers read these boards too and a little support and a lot more money would help too. Who on this board that has replied would volunteer to go do what any policeman does? I doubt anyone here would put their lives on the line for the ungrateful lot who condemn first!

Lambchop, I couldn't agree more with this comment. Also, isn't CSI on for maybe about 1 hour while REAL life investigations sometimes can go on for days, not even getting into the cold cases. I think the best thing for people to do, when they unnecessarily criticize a department, is to go apply for a job there, go through the training/certification, pass it, then work it. All other talk is just from the outside, looking in.

I agree with lambchop - we cannot condemn and blame the NPD for every crime that happens in Natchez. They do need our support and encouragement. I'll bet that many of the people that make negative comments would NOT be willing to do the required training to be a police officer much less, to actually do the job of a police officer. It is a shame that people are so quick to judge and condemn. What good comes from that? Think of something positive to DO to help prevent these crimes from happening.

I agree with you Lambchop. Instead of sitting around all hours of the night, go to the NPD and get in a cruiser with an officer and go on patrol with him. We will watch to see if the crime rate drops 50% the next day. If everyone were as smart as these people posting these criticisms, this would be a perfect world. I think some of them be allowed to be chief for a week.

I agree. We should all support our Police Department and Sheriff Department! Who exactly do you call when you are in need of protection or a crime has been committed? Heck, I've had my bad experiences with some of the officers but I don't hold their wrong doings against the rest of the guys who actually are out there doing their jobs. If the dummies living in these apartment complexes don't have the guts to run these kids off, if the parents of these kids don't have the guts to whip some sense into these punks, they're getting what they deserve. The parents could keep the guns away from the kids if they made an effort, they just don't care enough to search their rooms, their clothes, their cars, and KNOW what their kids are up to. Most parents know better than to trust their teenages, because most all teenagers will try to get away with whatever they can.

The people living in these areas know what's going on but don't CARE enough to put a stop to the loitering, dice, and drugs, so they're getting what they deserve.

It's just such a shame that all the young black guys, I know there are exceptions, but I see it a lot, the sagging pants, the slouchy clothes, the disrespect when you try to talk to them, the obvious stench of marijuana on them, they all want to live the THUG life, quick money from drugs, etc. The hip hop culture is KILLING the black youth. It is so sad.

I'm just thankful that a few good black parents will take the time to keep up with their kids and keep them out of trouble. It's hard, there is no other way. I know some good black kids that are working hard to be good citizens, but they are the exception it seems.

My sincere condolences go to both families. The police are not at fault. Yes we need more policemen. The town doesn't have the tax $ to hire more. Why do these kids have guns? Protection? Mischief? What will it take for our kids to stop being killed? Someone made a very good point about our kids wanting to live the "thug" life. I guess it is a lot easier to steal or sell something illegal than it is to get a real job with respect and dignity. I have seen one person in the paper 3 times last year for shoplifting. Each time he was given one year's probation with good behavior. What constitutes good behavior? If he is arrested a second and third time for the same offense you might think he would go to jail. Maybe we should reconsider who we vote for as a judge. We should all keep closer eyes on our children. Know where they are. Know who they are with. You don't have to be their friend, be their PARENT. Spend time with your children. Don't think it's not your kid getting into mischief. You should have a measure of trust with your children, but it doesn't hurt to keep tabs on them.

Krogers, I RARELY ever agree with anything you post, but I am going to have to go with you on your next to last post. Just rest assured, it is ONLY a certain population who are fascinated by the thug life, and if we were living in a more diverse population, you would see, nationwide, it's just about every race of people, who have these same type of issues and if they don't have these, they have some type. I don't know why ANYONE, of ANY race, would want to be a thug, but I agree, hip hop has glorified this lifestyle, and the problem with kids is, the line of what's reality and what's fake, music videos, is heavily blurred. I have seen white kids in Kansas city, joining gangs, fighting over perceived "territory," being arrested in big numbers, etc. I will go further and state, parents need to monitor the TV time. MTV and BET should not be their examples! Rump shakin' and rims, rule the day on those channels.

To npdsucks, it's quite obvious that you watch tv too much. I will bet you that GRS's were done on the suspects as well as the victim. GSR stands for Gunshot residue. Also to Natchez500, yes we do have an excellent Sheriff's Dept., 75% of them are former NPD officers.

ntzmom, yes you can volunteer at the PD. It is called the auxillary. One of those who had volunteered is now at the Police Academy becoming a real policeman, and he will be very good. Please don't ask me who or how I know because until he graduates, it is confidential as far as I know.

To Natchez500, Ask any of the PD officers why they left NPD. MONEY. The SO pays approximately $3000.oo a year more to do the same job. More pay and less work. In the words of an SO deputy....PD works too much for me to go over there. The ones that stay at NPD are loyal workers to the city....the same city that should pay them more. They aren't in it for the money though. It is a profession...not a job.

right commander you got your half of the story i have asked some of these men and women its the department not the money but yes the money helps now lets all not sit at home and say what the sheriff or police do not know or do its a law that they cannot tell all to us or the paper because of the constitution they are allowed just enough to show why a arrest is made to be made public until court time if you want to know what they did, go to court these are professional trained people working at the sheriff's office and police office, they cannot tell the whole story to the paper and the paper cannot print all the details (gun shot residue, sure they did that but why tell you in the paper) some of you are so stupid it shows also the sheriff and police do work together we should be proud of that that wasn't how it use to be look in the picture thats a deputy at the scene of the latest shooting if you want to help the police call your mayor get him off his chair and lets make him make the needed changes the police need its not all just the money folks loyal to the city thats a joke commander you know it those that can't leave its becasue they would lose money if they left the city and or they have been there being so lazy for so long that they don't want change

Part of what I think Teach4Peace is saying, Krogers, is that the thing linking people who make unfortunate choices, or who are caught up in bad situations, are linked less by race than by economic station.

It just so happens that you live in a place where race is tightly linked to economic station, part of the legacy of our country's history.

But kudos to you for using this death as a platform to go after "welfare mothers." They have it so, so good, don't they?

A statistic is not what happened here. This is someone's child...a fellow citizen whose life has been cut short.

It is a tragedy, an American tragedy. All the statistics on all the websites are not going to bring this young man back. People die and you quote statistics...you are rearranging the deck chairs.

It is not a race problem at all. Black folks love theirs kids as much as anyone one else.

Just imagine the emotional impact of all those statistics you quoted. It is sad, especially today for the family of that young man.

It is sad Kroger that you can only see the numbers on the wall.

Kroger may be racist to an extent, but at least I can read what he has written, it is spelled correctly with correct grammer. More than I can say for natchez500 or shawty. I too am sorry for the loss of this young man. In another time and place maybe he would have been able to do something with his life. Every death of a young person of any race because of gangs, drugs, drinking, or gambling is a waste of humanity. I don't hold the mother responsible - she has enough to worry about at this point - but everyone who could help these young people but instead turn their backs and walk away saying it's not my problem. Only community action, and especially amongst the blacks, who I do love dearly by the way, can stop all this ridiculous violence. Maybe that website was slanted racially, I'll check that out. In the meantime, I'll take your word on it. I did research the Natchez police website, there is some interesting info there, but no racial info. Other crime stat sites indicate Natchez is above the nat'l norm in murder and other violent crime. The Natchez police site says crimes is down 43% over the past years. If you go to the official FBI stat websites -

on the second webpage above date does include racial stats for murder

you will see for yourself that blacks commit significantly more murder, than other races. There is a lot of info here for all types of crime to include racial stats for both victims and offenders.

If you look at the hate crime webpage-
It is stated here that blacks did suffer by far more hate crimes than other race, and that whites, BY FAR, commited more hate crimes than others. But a full 12.9% of offenders of hate crime were unidentified. I hate to see that, and we should work to stop that of course.

You will see that yes, whites are guilty as hell too, especially in regards to arson and sex crimes.

I didn't create this, I don't like it, I wish it weren't true. But there you have it. Now what are YOU gonna do. Cry and whine and say I'm a racist, will that have any affect on what's going on? . I think I have shown that I can be fair, by admitting the above truths as reported by the FBI. I don't know why things are the way they are. But it must have something to do with life goals, parenting, and how we percieve the succesful method of achieving those goals. I subscribe to the method of good parenting, setting goals, education, training, perseverence, and respect for others. Do you?

tom was on the aux at the sheriff's office he is in the academy sponsored by the police department the sheriff office has one in the same class officer lee but anyway looks like we are getting two new officers onc for each agency great for natchez and adams county i was told the sheriff dept could not send two at the same time because they only had one opening and lee put in first borum will probably go to the sheriff's office when he gets out all the good ones do but still a win win for our area two good men

He is the one I'm talking about and the info was given to me in confidence. So much for anyone keeping a secret! LOL Anyway I have been told by someone who is also at the academy that Borum is doing very well "for his age" . I think he did not do well as a vet because it wasn't what he wanted to do, and flight instructions cost a LOT of money anywhere you go. It costs $30,000 at Delta State to get a commercial license and that is in addition to the college fees.
