Thieves try to strike Ferriday businesses
Published Wednesday, February 20, 2008
FERRIDAY — Would-be thieves have hit a couple of Ferriday businesses lately.
Owner of Colvin’s pharmacy, Bill Colvin, said he received a call from his security company at approximately 5:45 a.m. Monday stating a glass window had been broken and an alarm was going off at his business.
When he arrived at the business, Colvin said he was there before the police and he saw a black male exiting out of a back window, which had been broken.
About that time the police, who had been on another call, arrived, Colvin said.
Because the almost-culprit was caught in the act, nothing was taken, Colvin said.
“The guy had began to take a lot of narcotics in a trash bag, and he panicked and left it on the floor and didn’t get away with anything,” Colvin said.
The burglar was not apprehended at that time, Colvin said.
Similarly, burglars tried to enter Hollis Jewelry on the same day.
Owner David Hollis said he received a call from his security company that someone was tampering with the phone lines at the business.
When he arrived on the scene, he saw that the sirens had been broken off of the building and someone had tried to alter the alarm box.
Nothing was apparently taken.
Ferriday Police Chief Richard Madison confirmed the attempted robberies.
“It is under investigation,” he said. “We are going to put someone in jail.”

Ferriday is nothing but a sewer! They should just bulldoze the entire mess and start over again, or give up on being a town altogether.

the robber could have got a speed ticket if there were driving... check the police ticket book..lol

At least they caught them before they stole anything. I could say more. I think I will...lol...in Natchez, the thieves got away!

Ferriday is not a sewer! Its the trash that live in Ferriday,or should I say the ones who come from other areas, like Vidalia,& Natchez to do the crimes! Ferriday is a town, who many are still proud of it! I may not live in the city limits, but its still my hometown!,And yes I hate what goes on here, thats why we need Gene Allen out!!! I was born and raised in Natchez, most of my life and I still have family there, but the robberies, are going on there like crazy also! So it is"nt only Ferriday! So no to your stupid response,We are not giving up on our town!!! Are you giving up on yours? So think what you say before you try to preach it to others!!! Ferriday is"nt the problem! Its the people who live in it,and I ,mean in town, the ones who are suspose to be protecting it from things like this! But they are to busy playing footies with some of the ladies of the night in Ferriday!!! So you see, thats why Glen has got to get back in here and get this mess straighten out!!!! So kd,maybe you should practice what you preach!!!! All of Ferriday is"nt bad, just like Natchez,I hear of so much mess going on there, should they bulldoze it down also,I don"t think so!

Natchez is so not remotely nasty and run down like Ferriday.
Honestly, that place is a disgrace to the state. I am disgusted when I have to drive through there.
Glen McGlothen was the mayor for a long time and the place was still a dump,.
Why dont they fix that place up?

That's pretty bad that Mr. Colvin got there before the police...It's not like he lives around the corner from his business...it's more like 15 miles away!!! SAD!!!

It's a wonder Bill Colvin wasn't stopped speeding on the way to check his alarm system out honestly.
Ferriday was my hometown too, but I sure don't tell folks I'm from there now!! It is a discrace, very sad, and I am always sad when I look back at what Ferriday use to be before Gene Allen and those thugs he calls cops took over

Ferriday is a dump, at least it does look like one. Since I was a kid growing up in Natchez, I can't ever recall going to Ferriday, and it not looking like a shanty town. Natchez DOES NOT look like that, say what you want. To think buildings are abandoned, when they are occupied, really is one testament to that. If the town would take some of the revenue, they are getting from traffic violations, ex. someone got a ticket on EE Wallace Blvd for a cracked windshield, maybe those funds can help.

I used to work on a farm over there when I was a teen. It was pretty bad, but the last time I went through there, it was awful. But, the whole Miss-Lou area needs better educational facilities, better teachers, better tax base and better jobs for future generations. If they don't get it in the next few years, "Will the last person to leave please turn off the lights"
On education of our future citizens, lets leave behind" No child left behind" when Bush leaves office next January please. It has only made teachers focus on testing at the end of the year instead of teaching all year. And it is okay for some students to prepare for a career in construction or at Walmart...or farming and prison guards. Not all students need to be ready for college. They are not going there. Let the parents and students decide when the child hits the 11th grade and start training them for either college or career....let it be there decision.

I couldn't agree with you more redusmfan! Teachers need to be able to get back to teaching and not just testing. The best teachers, when they teach, have students who pass the tests. Everyone should not have college shoved down their throats. I know people who did not go to college and those who did, and they are both successful. With Mississippi tuition rates going up every year, unless the parents have an ample college fund for them, many will graduate in debt, going to college off the federal loan racket.

Hard to believe that I have someone with the name teach in the title agreeing with me. But I am conservative by choice and I feel my president has not looked at what he has done to our educational system in this country with his well-meaning but ill-concieved plan. Our next president, whoever he or she may be, needs to realize that money is being spent to train kids for labor careers after they leave highschool that could have been taught, like it was for many years, in trade school while they are in high school. It also stands to reason that the parents have to acknowledge that little Johney or Schoolgirl Suzie may not be college material. This will require them to swallow that pride sandwich and help guide the child to trade school. They could receive a diploma that basically states that they are prepared for the working world, not the college world, while the others could be college prepped diplomas and be ready to go party and flunk out of a college anywhere in the USA....just kidding, but I hope you understand my true meaning here.

Redufsman and TEach-at least Bush tried to bring accountability to the school system
no one else has done anything to improve it, you cannot blame Ferriday's stupidity on Bush, that is nonsense
but I do agree as I know a lot of Vidalia students, the homework and testing is ridiculous, the students are so stressed out, they have NO time for themselves after school, they are doing homework 4-8 hours AFTER an 7 hour school day. This type of daily schedule for children is UNHEALTHY
MOTEL FIRE- yes it's true, looked like the RELAX INN to me, close to the Regional Hospital, the entire roof is gone, it's still smoking and the Fire Dept is pumping lots of water on it
GOOD JOB NATCHEZ FIRE DEPT.!!

Krogers, I am for doing something to educational system. Plus, I voted for Bush Twice. I am glad he tried, but we have seen that it is not working, so I am for moving on. Try something else, like what I outlined in the response above. I am for accountability...and for common sense. We are trying to force every student in highschool to be college ready...when we all know that many of them will only see the inside of a college dorm when they go there to pick up there sibling and drive them home for the weekend.

and by the way , my friends, many of us fuss and have disagreements, sometimes it gets pretty nasty in here, but I want you to know - I love all my Natchez friends, whatever you may think of me from what I have expressed on these pages
Have you ever crossed trails, with someone you know from Natchez, out of town somewhere, or even out of state somewhere else in the USA? That's when you realize, that we should all love one another, living together here everyday. Do any of you share that feeling? To me people from Natchez are special, even if we disagree about local politics, or any other issue for that matter.

Redusmfan- my daughter recently graduated from NHS and did attend the trade school here, I was kinda skeptical of her wanting to do that, but respected her desire to learn something practical - things have turned out OK for her, she moved off to Hattiesburg in pursuit of college and is working two jobs now and ................
so I agree with you on that

Let me ask you something? This occured to me this morning listening to market news and primaries---
IF the democrats gain the White House- looks like OBAMA does have a shot --
we know a few things would happen in that case:
taxes will skyrocket as he says straight out he'll retract ALL of Bush's tax cuts (I'm already paying tens of thousands in sales, fed income, state income, and local property and tag taxes-- as any small business owner is) so paying more really scares me
He has said he will pull all troops will be away from the war on terrorists so within a few months the Middle East area will be destabilized and thrown into chaos causing the cost of OIL to soar over $100
so we will witness a stock market crash as every investor will pull his money out, businesses will stagnate, folks will loose jobs, and we will have major attacks on the USA within months as Al Qaeda gains strength and reorganizes, as it is already gaining some strength in Pakistan.
Am I paranoid?

in celebration of Black History Month:
two BLACK men that were like second fathers to me
Dr. Jesse Harness - the Director of Alcorn Cooperative Extension Service- taught me many things about life and how to succeed, I love him dearly and will never forget the kindness and love he showed me, we worked together and brought economic development to small farmers across Mississippi
Dr. James Garner- of Mississippi State Univ, my direct mentor and Professor of Horticulture- guided me through graduate school , helped me find funds for school, taught me how to work and stay focused on my goals, I'll never forget him and how he helped me through times when I wanted to give up
these men took me under their wing and I wouldn't be who I am today without them, I owe them a debt of gratitude that I will never really be able to repay, but I pay tribute to them here

The main problem with the education system is that many educators could not teach unless we knew someone...We had to leave the state and they allowed in many cases their friends to teach.Even when some went to outlying parishes, those test scores were higher that the areas that
they left. Many of us traveled many miles each day to work. Now that the friends have messed up,It is a mess.I am referring to East Baton Rouge Parish(Baton Rouge) It is a real mess.

I'm glad Mr. Colvin was not hurt he is a really nice man. So many people deserve better than Feriday offers, it's a disgrace to the state.
As for the famous people from there very few are worth mentioning. Jerry Lee Lewis' son is ashamed to tell people he's his son.

As a teen, Jerry Lee Lewis' son used to stay with his grandmother in Ferriday, and then he went on to play drums in his father's band, but he died years ago. He used to hang out at the local drive-in. Does Jerry Lee have another son?
Posted by overthehill60 (anonymous) on February 20, 2008 at 3:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)
His son lives in Ferriday. His son that played in the band was named Jerry Lee Jr. & the one that drowned was Steve Allen.
Not many people know about the son in Ferriday because he doesn't tell people.

He did have a son Jerry Lee Lewis Jr who was killed prob 30 or so years ago in a jeep. Also, there is his son Ronnie Lewis and Melton Pierre, who may be adopted or something.

Yes, I agree that Ferriday looks scragly, and I do live there. There are buildings that are barely standing that look terrible, trash on the streets, stray mangey dogs, and loitering on the corners. Ferriday is in desperate need of attention, thats for sure. But, the community has to come together and help too. Maybe there needs to be a community effort for a "clean-up day". I hope time will tell.
Posted by Teach4Peace (anonymous) on February 20, 2008 at 6:10 p.m. (Suggest removal)
You know, I can't for the life of me figure out why each and every elected official of that town, doesn't look around and know something is wrong. It's as if they look around there and think everything is fine. This place is going to require some major dollars and some major clean-up and it can start with a gas tank filled bulldozer on some of those buildings. There is indeed a problem when occupied buildings look abandoned. If ANY company or industry, other than Wal-Mart is going to take that town seriously, it needs to clean up its act. It will take a fed up community filled with people willing to keep Ferriday clean. Those who loiter, stray diseased looking animals, etc, are going to need to be removed. Does Ferriday have any property laws or ordinances? Enforcement?
Posted by Teach4Peace (anonymous) on February 20, 2008 at 6:31 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I wish soap and water would turn that place around, at least even 180 degrees, half way, but I think it will take more than that. Soap and water works on places that are already in some type of array and just may need cleaning. Ferriday is beyond soap and water, the town needs the disinfectant called an overhaul.

Yes, slingshot, this did happen about 10 days ago, Feb. 10 to be exact!
Mr. Colvin was called by the security company at 5:49 am and yes, he arrived at his store in time to see the burglar jumping out of a side window and no, there were no FPD officers anywhere around. After he arrived (at 6:08), he called his security company to make sure that they had called the police, then he called the FPD dispatcher to find out where the police were. They said they were at another possible burglary (the one at the jewelry store) and tied up there while the burglary was going on at Colvin's. The burglar did make off with a bag of 'narcotics' and dropped an additional bag with narcotics in it at the scene. The two FPD cars did arrive 3 or 4 minutes later. Chief Madison's remark was that we have a 'meth' problem and these guys are looking for drugs to make their meth with. (If I'm not mistaken, you don't use narcotics to make meth with!) He also stated that 'we are trying to get more police officers, that's the real issue. I'm talking with the Mayor about getting more personnel and more officers on the street.'
Now the way I read the original article, there were two officers in cars on duty at 6:00 in the morning that Sunday. Where were the other 17 cars and the officers that drive them? Shouldn't there be more than two officers on duty during an evening/night shift? Maybe it's not so much getting 'more' personnel but being able to schedule the personnel you already have!!

((sayitloud)) That's probably who it is. I was thinking his name was Jerry also. I remember thinking it was odd that he was named Jerry Lewis since his brother was named that. There is a Jerry Lee Lewis listed in the phone book. I know his wife, but have only met once.

Yeah I had heard that Jerry Lee Jr had played drums for his dad in his band and then he was sadly killed. I think Ronnie Lewis is from an entirely different wife of Jerry Lee Sr's. They must have adopted Melton because he looks to be from some other country but he is super nice and very intelligent.

Jerry Lee married his cousin, but that marriage was annulled. Back in the old days people married cousins all the time, before they figured out that was what was causing the hairlips. The people around here still loved him and went faithfully to his concerts when he came to town. The last one I attended was in Ferriday and Jerry Lee Jr was playing drums.
