Natchezs firefighters respond to an early morning blaze at the Relax Inn.
Early morning blaze strikes Natchez Hotel

NATCHEZ — A fire that started in room 201 of the Relax Inn on U.S. 61 South quickly spread and destroyed much of the building.
The Natchez Fire Department has ruled the fire accidental.
Chief Paul Johnson said the fire is believed to have started in or near the room’s air conditioning unit.
The hotel’s 88 rooms were divided in two buildings. The fire damaged only one of the buildings, containing 50 rooms.
The hotel’s owner, Alex Patel, said most of the rooms that were not directly impacted by the fire were damaged by smoke and water.
The fire, which started before 1:30 a.m., was still giving the Natchez Fire Department problems several hours later.
Around 11 a.m. fire crews continued to put out small fires that originated on what was left of the roof.
One firemen at the scene said the roofing asphalt routinely reignites and is problematic for firemen.
Guests of the hotel milled around the parking lot as smoke from the smoldering structure hung in the air.
Modesto Dominguez, a patron, said he was at the hotel when the blaze began.
He said his room was just a few doors down from the room where the fire originated.
Dominguez said just before he noticed the smoke and fire he heard loud noises coming from the room where the fire started.
Only moments later he said he saw large flames coming from room 201.
Red Cross Chapter Manager Angela Brown said a shelter at Parkway Baptist Church has been opened to temporarily house those who once called the hotel home.
Brown said many at the hotel used it as a full-time residence.
The Red Cross is currently giving aid to approximately 20 victims of the fire.
But on Wednesday morning the Patels looked most victimized by the fire.
Standing in the dim lobby of the front office Alex, and his wife Sonya, tried to decide on their next move.
Both looked to be in shock from the morning’s events.
“We are blind right now,” Sonya said. “We don’t know anything now.”
Alex said once torn down, the damaged portion of the hotel will likely not be replaced.

Well something got a little hot and heavy there. LOL This might put a damper on a lot of criminal activity in the town. I wonder if it was a meth lab that exploded or just faulty wires since the place has been there for ages. just speculating ???

I was wondering if they were going to report about this. Ha, this will get interesting to see what will be said about this fire! :)

i say "let the place burn to the ground." it should be condemned. it is infested with disease and illicit activities.
Posted by eagles (anonymous) on February 20, 2008 at 9:53 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Maybe rats gnawed the wires and caused it!
Posted by eagles (anonymous) on February 20, 2008 at 9:54 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Or maybe they had so much bug spray in there that someone lit a cigarette and the place went up?
Posted by redusmfan (anonymous) on February 20, 2008 at 9:58 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I will have to say that my speculation is wiring since it started in the second floor and burned the roof the way it did. If it was drugs being manufactured in there, then shut the sucker down, just like they did on highway 80 in Jackson. They found drugs being made in some rooms and closed the motels down and boarded them up.
Posted by firered (anonymous) on February 20, 2008 at 10:03 a.m. (Suggest removal)
That place is a well known hot spot for drug activity. It should have been shut down years ago but for some reason nothing has ever been done about it. It might have been the wiring but in my opinion its not a loss to Natchez.

The loss of this place will greatly improve the area.

This was a popular place for teens to rent on prom night, but I have never heard any of the rumors of drug activity. But who knows?

It has always been a cheap motel since I could remember. Plow the sucker down and start over. I would gladly help build a new one.

This place is a drug haven...I hope they plow it down.
The owners are good people, they try but they have had no luck running the drug people off.

Adams County Circuit Court Cases Thursday, Feb. 14:
Cases against Mark Brinegar on charges of possession of a schedule II controlled substance, hydrocodone in an amount being more than 40 dosage units and possession of a schedule II controlled substance, codeine, in an amount of more than two dosage unites but less than 10 dosage units dismissed.
This is why we have these crimes!!!!!! :)

TO ROBERTH33: Just from word of mouth. Just listen to people talk. Why do you have some too or were you a movie star yourself. You know NO SECRET in Natchez is between you and that person. Everybody knows your business.

ntzmom from my understanding its not the first time he's been arrested for drugs. Now the judges just dismiss his case? I wonder what their reasoning is?
And roberth33 I agree with oldschool. Rumors stream out of that hotel faster than the speed of light. Well, around here they come from everywhere.

How much do they charge to rent a hotel room for an hour? Is it the same as the usual daily charge? How, exactly did you know about that beachbum? Have you rented by the hour? I can't see how a building burning down could be a good thing unless the owner has a good insurance policy to cover rebuilding. If the comments made on here are true and that hotel was a known haven for druggies, then I suppose the other hotels in town will get their business now. So, it may have been better for that hotel to remain intact...when you burn roaches out of one hole, they will go to another hole.
Does that hotel have a swimming pool?

I don't have a scanner because I have better things to do (such as leave comments on the ND) than sit around and listen to criminal activities progress in the Miss Lou area. And what do you mean, yousaywhat, about the Democrat not having much to write about? It is rare (~ once a week) that this site has something of interest to write about.

Well I have it on good source, how it caught on fire!
Well you"re right, its a cheap motel for a few hours, because A angry wife caught her husband, red handed, and set it on fire! That was dum on her part, because now she"ll go to jail, and the husband gets his cake and eats it also!!! She should have let the air out of his tires, and waited for them to come outside, thats what I would have done. But its always been a cheap place, even when I was a teen,I knew people who would rent a room just to use the swimming pool. And thats been about 30 years ago!!! lol!!!!
Posted by Peace007 (anonymous) on February 20, 2008 at 10:44 p.m. (Suggest removal)
You're right papas. The angry wife should have just thought about it for a minute and then after having come to her senses, she could have driven over to Ja'Nels and bought a dozen roses and a thank you note to leave outside the door. Then she could have waited on them while sitting comfortably inside her car with her digital camera. They could have listened to her laughter as she called out, "eat my dust" while driving away. Makes way better sense to me.

Amen!!! Thats what I would have done, because now she has ruined her life, and gave him what he wants!! I just hope that there are"nt small children, involved to be without their mother, far as that goes, any child whether they"re grown,or just little wee guys! Its sad!

the mexicans were brought to Natchez to work on another hotel. With all the people in Natchez and Vidalia why would they bring them here to work? Could it be they don't have to pay them as much that something Natchez City Officals should take care of before someone comes to Natchez to build something!

Its funny that I never heard of all the drug activity at this hotel until now. Why hasn't anyone told the authorities about all this criminal activity that is so widely known about? Sounds to me like people just like running their mouths about things they know nothing about.
And by the way, I can think of at least three other motels in town that are much trashier than the Relax Inn.

I read the posted statements infrequently but it saddens me to see that many of the bloggers seem to spend a lot of time posting statements and should be taking some refresher courses in English, spelling, grammar and more. Consider the sources as you read these comments. Many are inarticulate folks with nothing to do but rant about anything and everything. We should spend more time improving the school systems in our area and working on raising the bar for our residents, and then there'd be a lot less for them to rant about.
Posted by obamayamama (anonymous) on February 21, 2008 at 8:28 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Ranting relieves stress literate. Some are better in English grammer than others. At least we all know how to type.
Posted by triscuit (anonymous) on February 21, 2008 at 8:34 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I agree with literate. It's not likely that people looking after responsibilities like jobs and families have the time required to read and post as much as some of these folks do. Ranting is more fun than responsibilities I guess. It's also more hip to be disdainful and critical than it is to be positive or sympathetic. Also, the spelling and poor grammar is SO depressing, and probably directly related to why the regulars have so much time to be regular. I just hope the Democrat staff isn't confusing the narrow opinions represented in these forums with what a legitimate newspaper ought to be reporting.
Posted by Peace007 (anonymous) on February 21, 2008 at 8:53 a.m. (Suggest removal)
What about the few regulars that write like journalist? You failed to mention them in your rant. Some of the comments are coming from obviously intelligent people with excellent grammar, and even some of the comments made with poor grammar make valid points. It's just people expressing their opinons and everyone in the US and in Natchez aren't college graduates, nor are they seeking a job in journalism, but they still have a right to voice their opinion. Do you see that red X in the top right corner, if you don't like what you are reading, click on that, or just stop reading once you finish the article. Thank you for reading my opinion.

Well of course 'you saywhat'
The fire marshall would say an air conditioner did this.
After all, the sheriff and the police say we do not have a drug problem in this town.
If it was a slow fire like an air contioner , did the place not have smoke detectors?
Posted by kpage (anonymous) on February 21, 2008 at 9:45 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Ms.Kitty, I believe Patel means "hotel" or "hotel owner" in their country.
literate...I remember an old man once saying, "Everybody has their place in this world. Some go to college and earn degrees and some don't go and are content to work by the sweat of their brow."
I agree with this man. Having a degree doesn't make one more intelligent...he just knows more stuff. I've known many folks with rough, hard-working hands who are wiser than the educated. To be intelligent AND have sense is truly a remarkable feat. I don't believe correct grammar makes a person wise.
Posted by Peace007 (anonymous) on February 21, 2008 at 9:59 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I've heard of people who have scanners and when they hear about a fire or a wreck, or something like that, they run get in their car and go see. I've also heard that sometimes, they get in the way and hinder investigations or block access to firetrucks, etc. So, if you have a scanner, don't get in the way, ok.
Posted by Peace007 (anonymous) on February 21, 2008 at 10:01 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Patel is just a common name in India. lol. They don't all own hotels.
Posted by literate (anonymous) on February 21, 2008 at 10:02 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Kpage, being literate has nothing to do with going to college. Using proper grammar has nothing to do with having a college degree and just because I'm articulate doesn't mean I don't work hard by the sweat of my brow. I don't have a college degree and am a contractor. So my place in this world is to work hard, by the sweat of my brow AND work my brain. The two are not mutually exclusive.

kpage after doing the google on patel, I find that patel can mean inn keeper or land owner. Although, all Patels do not own hotels, most indian hotel owners in America are named Patel, lol. So, you were correct...my bad.
Posted by kpage (anonymous) on February 21, 2008 at 10:32 a.m. (Suggest removal)
literate...what I'm saying is that some people don't care if their grammar is incorrect. The important point is that their opinion be heard. Those who don't place so much importance on their grammar take offense at those who point it out. It's like someone doubting their intelligence. It's not how you type it out that matters...it's the fact that an opinion was made in our free America, regardless if it's gramatically correct or not.
My mother insisted on correct grammar in her home and I still abide by it. But she also taught me to not point out other's imperfections. Who knows, maybe some people have overcome dyslexia and are doing the best they can.

obamayamama the air conditioners are also heaters in hotel rooms, normally. So it could have been either one being run at the time, but possibly the blaze could have come from that source even if it weren't being used at the time.

I agree that they wouldn't just give a false report about what started the fire. That is an old building and its not exactly in the best condition. It is reasonable that an air conditioner could have caused the fire and such extensive damage. Also, I can't believe some of the stories that got started on here. I figured the meth lab thing would come up, but a bar-be-que pit and an enraged wife? Wow. And the people talking about it seemed so convinced. I was quite amused! Thanks for the laugh guys!
Oh and to the "regulars", don't let the ramblings of another bother you. There are people on here all the time spouting off about poor grammar, bad spelling, etc. Keep reading their posts, you'll witness that they aren't perfect either.

In the humid south, if it is 60 degrees outside and you are in close quarters, you may run your airconditioner at night. I do. At 2 o'clock one morning a young man woke me up to tell me my airconditioner was on fire. It had frozen up while I was asleep, and, had I not had a fire extinguisher handy, my little house probably would have burned, because it was already hard to see and breathe by the time I was awakened. It's not farfetched at all that an airconditioner unit could have caused this fire

Did you know that in the state of MS, if you allow someone to stay at your home, your home becomes their eminant domain? Should you find yourself wishing that you had never allowed that person to stay with you, you then have to go to justice court and have them evicted. Even if you do convince them to leave, and turn over the key to your home, they have the right to come back if they choose...since they had previously been staying there, and especially if they have even one bag of their personal effects still inside your home. The ex guest can kick in the door of your home, if they are locked out, and come in, and wake you up to slap and harrass you, unless of course you knew in advance to go and have a restraining order placed against them, and if you pick up a stick and hit them with it in self defense, you can be arrested. It's up to the cop that comes on the call to determine who is and who isn't the aggressor. If you are a small white female and the slap mark isn't red across your face, naturally that makes you the aggressor against a 200 lb. military trained Iraqi veteran sissy, since you hit him with a big stick and his arm is red.
I don't understand this, but at this point, I am sure it may have been better to just shoot the guest, and claim...thought it was a burgular!
