Judge Persons expected to rule in election contest
Published Thursday, February 28, 2008
WOODVILLE — An official ruling for the three-month Wilkinson County election contest is expected today.
Judge Jim Persons notified all attorneys involved in the case last Thursday that he plans to call for a new election, but an official ruling has not yet been rendered.
Persons said in the notice he would render the verdict within seven days of Feb. 21.
Persons decided to call for a new election after he ruled that the absentee, affidavit and curbside ballots from the Aug. 7 Democratic primary could not be considered as evidence in the contest because their chain of custody was in question.
Attorneys for the challengers to the election — circuit clerk candidate Lynn Tolliver Delaney, supervisor candidate Kirk Smith and sheriff candidate Jessie Stewart — tried to convince Persons to keep the machine-counted ballots.
In his unofficial notice, Persons said with the exclusion of the paper ballots the will of the voters of Wilkinson County could not be determined.

The new Sec of State promised to pursue voter ID legislation within the first 90 days in office. So far, he has honored that promise and is supporting Senate Bill 2910, known as the Voter Reform Act. Simply showing an id to prove you're who you say you are when you vote is not unreasonable or intimidating. You sure have to do it when you get food stamps... The democrats have blocked this legislation for years, but the time for it is here. We should all quickly call/write/e-mail or senators and representatives in Jackson and demand they support this legislation. If they don't, call them back and let them know you'll remember it at election time.
Quick action is needed because this bill may see action this week. I wish the Natchez Democrat could do a story on this and other voter id legislation so people would know about it.

Hello ya'll , Thanks ratherbefishin . I'll get right on . This re-election doesn't make any sense to me . Aren't we putting known criminals back on the very ballots that got them into trouble before ?

Yep, that's the way it sounds, southernbelle!!
Like rushingjr said, it seems like Louisiana politics!!!
Hopefully W. County can put this crap behind them and start all over again. Every town deserves honest leaders to govern them. Hey, it sounds like I'm talking about Ferriday or Natchez!!! Good night. Corruption is everywhere!

i remember that the elections in iraq last year required people who voted to dip there thumbs in ink to show who had voted. maybe this type of system could be used in MS and LA. but then that would prevent people from voting here once or twice, and then going to another voting precinct and voting a few more times.
just a thought.

IT WILL BE NICE WITH VOTER ID ESPECIALLY IN THE BIG CITIES WHERE PEOPLE ARE NOT KNOWN.IT WON'T MATTER IN WILKINSON CO. IF THE SAME VOTER FRAUD INDIVIDUALS ARE ALLOWED TO RUN THE POLLS.I HOPE THE FEDS WILL PUT THEM AWAY FOR A FEW YEARS.

The Feds need to over-see the polls and count the
votes. I never thought the good people of this county
would see this much justice. This political machine
has been corrupt for many years.

I wonder who is going to oversee this election? Are the going to let Mon Allen be responsible for counting the votes I certainly hope not.....

dottie, I hate to burst you bubble, but i don't think the good people of this county have seen any justice.
'JUSTICE-- the maintenance or administration of what is just especially by the impartial adjustment of conflicting claims or the assignment of merited rewards or punishments'

FIY--Wilkinson County Circuit Clerk Mon Cree Allen has announced that his office will be open until noon on Saturday, March 1, specifically of the purpose of absentee voting for the Tuesday, March 11, primary elections.
I am not sure but I think you can contact the sheriffs office, any hollins, or morgan supporters and they will deliver your absentee ballot to you. This offer may not apply to those living further than Byram, please call for this information
