Brookhaven officials search for elderly woman

Published Sunday, March 2, 2008

BROOKHAVEN (AP) — Brookhaven police are looking for an 83-year-old woman who reportedly disappeared from her home Thursday or Friday.

Police described Virginia Ratliff as a white woman about 5-foot-1 and 135 pounds.

Police said relatives became concerned when they arrived at her house Friday to find the home dark and a back door open. The woman’s car also was missing.

Police said the woman may have left home to visit her husband, who was hospitalized Thursday in Jackson.

Police said she may be driving a white 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis with Lincoln County Tag 987-LIH.

I think they need to look in Jackson with all the car jacking going on there. I hope she is alright and did not take a wrong turn inthe wrong neighborhood.

My prayers to this family. I sincerely hope this lady is found alive. She could be anywhere; I-20 is vicious with traffic and lane changes. I hope she did not take that route.

But I have to ask what is on alot of peoples minds:

Why would you leave an 83 yo in her home alone wtill in possession of her keys? People that age still feel their independence and will not wait for someone to come over and take them to the store. There should have been a grand-relative to sit with her.

I am not dancing on your pain, I am stating the obvious.

Even though a lot of 80+ year olds are very capable and able-minded individuals, I wonder if she had started suffering from dimentia? If so, she could be somewhere sleeping in her car -- confused and disoriented.

I sure hope she is found alive and well; this is such a cruel world we live in. I would suggest installing a GPS (geographical positioning system) on a family member's car who may be suffering from diminished mental faculties but insist on being independent. Of course, it would also be a priceless tool in locating a car that has been stolen.

My prayers are for her safe and swift return.
