Downtown gets a little spring cleaning
Published Sunday, March 2, 2008
NATCHEZ — On Saturday morning, a small but devout group of residents snaked through downtown’s streets cleaning the city, one piece of trash at a time.
The Natchez Downtown Development Association’s beautification committee spearheaded the event meant to get the city’s streets cleaned in time for Pilgrimage.
Executive director of the NDDA Carrie Lambert said while turnout for the event was less than she expected, progress was still being made on the cleaning effort.

Najee Myles, 17, Krystal Luss, 18, and Tevah Saxon pick up debris in downtown Natchez Saturday morning during the Downtown Natchez Cleanup.
A group of less than a dozen, armed only with garbage bags and gloves, collected trash from the bluff, up Franklin Street then back down Main Street.
Lambert and several volunteers agreed the bulk of the trash consisted of cigarette butts.
“They are everywhere,” Lambert said. “There must be a million of them.”
Rosemary Hall could be seen for most of the morning hunched over, filling her white garbage bag.
Hall said the hunched over look is all part of good trash collection.
“When you get down on the level of the trash, you get more trash,” she said.
But for Hall, the trash pick up is just her part of helping the city.
“It’s like a spring cleaning,” she said. “There’s going to be a lot of people coming to town in the coming weeks and we want it to look good.”
Two students from Natchez High Scholl also showed up to sack trash on Saturday.
Najee Myles and Krystal Luss chatted as they strolled the streets in search of refuse.
The girls said they heard about the event at school and thought it would be a good way to give something back to the city.
Luss even had an idea on how to get more high school students involved in the effort next year.
“Maybe if it started in the afternoon instead of the morning,” she said.

That took a lot of might, and I, as a resident of Natchez, commend all people involved.

Thank you ,all of ya'll that picked up trash . It is one of my biggest peeves to see litter . I four wheel the little creek behind our house with a trash bag .You would be amazed at how much people litter . If you pack it in then you should pack it out! That means whether you're riding or walking . I like to see our prisoners picking up trash . It's productive and helps the looks of our state . By the way ya'll they are people too. Slow down when driving and you see them doing their work . And for those of ya'll that don't believe in creek riding . I am very very careful not to disturb nature . I respect it . I try to leave it as i find it . As much as possible, anyway

I think litterbugs should be executed. I hate driving down Lower Woodville Road behind an Escalade and getting hit with Popeye boxes. Makes my neck veins stand out and I start turning green and stuff. Ya know?

Just a thought here. When I was working I sometimes worked a shift that if I left home at the wrong time I was in behind school buses. Believe me ,, the trash that was thrown out the windows of the buses was unreal. I reported this several times to all the schools but no action was ever taken. For the life of me I cannot understand why the bus drivers cannot put a stop to this. I do know it needs to be stopped. The kids need to be educated on littering. But then they need to be educated on a lot of subjects they never hear about.

destiny - yeah, I've seen the same thing. They like to try to throw coke cans into sun roofs...that's just not nice!

Get the tag number of the vehicle of where the coke cans are coming, sign charges on the vehicle from where the cans are being thrown from, the owner is responsible! Contact the NPD!

Good job Mrs Lambert. I think the downtown bar owners should pitch in on this also. There are always lots of beer bottles in the streets sunday morning from the bar crowd. If these owners got together and rotated cleaning up, it would sure keep the city and neighboors off their back.
