McGlothin wins by 31 votes

Published Saturday, March 8, 2008

FERRIDAY — By a margin of 31 votes, citizens of Ferriday elected Glen McGlothin mayor for the fourth time in 20 years Saturday.

McGlothin was in a run-off with incumbent Mayor Gene Allen, and when the polls closed, McGlothin had 51.05 percent of the vote with 753 votes cast in his favor and Allen held 48.95 percent of the vote with 722 votes.

McGlothin previously served as mayor from 1988 through 1996, and again from 2000 to 2004.

Elizabeth Atkins and newly elected Ferriday Mayor Glen McGlothin celebrate after hearing election final results Saturday evening at the Concordia Parish Community Center. McGlothin won with a vote of 753 to Gene Allen’s 722.

At his victory party at the Concordia Parish Community Center, McGlothin and supporters danced to music ranging from Elvis to AC/DC.

Stepping outside for a moment, McGlothin said he was excited by the election.

“I feel great, I feel elated that the people of Ferriday have provided me with another chance to be the mayor of Ferriday,” he said.

When Allen heard the news of the outcome, he said he wanted to extend his congratulations to McGlothin.

“The people of Ferriday spoke,” Allen said. “It was a good, clean race.”

For now, Allen said he will continue with the running of the everyday business of the city, and McGlothin can bring in his transition team whenever he wants.

McGlothin said he looked forward to working with Allen.

“There’s a lot of work that needs to be done in Ferriday, and I won’t be able to do it by myself, but I’ll be able to do that with everybody’s help,” McGlothin said.

In the primary election, McGlothin carried approximately 48 percent of the vote, and Allen took approximately 33 percent of the vote among a field of seven candidates.

McGlothin will take office in July.

Okay, I am not from Ferriday, but, if he was in office all this time before, I just want to know, why has the city, under his watch, looked so bad for years? Ferriday didn't just start looking bad. Will he change it's appearance this time around? Will there be ordinances or property enforcements, on the books already or created, to make that town look much better?

I can't negate him, so please don't respond with posts that I don't like him, I don't know him. I just want to know, will he be able to make Ferriday better?

emp-I doubt Gene will have to act like Glen Lipsey , since Glen McGlothin, didn't act like Randy by receiving illegal votes.
Like you locelyokel I am just surprised at how many votes Gene got at all. I think this should drive home to Justin that as a politician he really doesn't have much of a future. I have always heard that he is a good preacher and maybe that is what he should stick to because he does not seem to be able to win nor is he able to deliver his votes to some one else. Justin if you read this, God probably doesn't need another politician, but he can always use a true man of God.

As far as making Ferriday "look" better , what Ferriday needs is to get rid of its dealers, the uses will leave if there are no dealers; parents that care making kids study and act right; and the school system that will teach and not make allowances for race (I can not help but wonder why educators that are primarily a majority black are willing to accept such sub-standard behavior from their pupils, primarily black).

Columbia, La spent massive amounts of money in the 1990's so it will look better only to have the bridge moved so all the traffic now bypasses the down town. THe absolute best that a town or city can do is reflect the quality of its citizens. Maybe that's what Ferriday looks like.

Good Luck, Glen.

GLEN WAS IN OFFICE BEFORE, WHAT DID HE DO, THAT POOR TOWN HAS NOT HAD A MAYOR TO DO ANYTHING, GLEN WILL BE TO BUSY WTH HIS BAND, SO WHAT DOES THE TOWN HAVE TO LOOK FORWARD TO?

Posted by Termite (anonymous) on March 9, 2008 at 9:47 a.m. (Suggest removal)

First of all congratulations Glen. I am glad both black and white citizens of Ferriday decided enough was enough. I do not understand how Mr. Allen got so many votes unless it is a black / white issue. If that was the case both races need to forget what happened years ago and stand together to make Ferriday a better place for your kids and grand kids, both black and white. They are the ones that are suffering for peoples stupidity. Most of the people that created the bad blood between blacks and whites are dead and gone. Mr. Allen was the wrong man to change what needs to be done in Ferriday and With the help of all citizens in Ferriday, Glen can move our city back to being a respectful community. Not by himself, but with the help of all. Mr. Allen had the wrong idea for making speeding tickets the #1 revenue for the city. This city needs to gain it's respect back, economic developement, stop the drugs and crime, solid backing for the elected politicians and it will change. It would have never changed with Mr. Allen. He may be a great Mortician, but definately was not a mayor.

Posted by timeless (anonymous) on March 9, 2008 at 12:51 p.m. (Suggest removal)

First of all, as a citizen of Natchez, I would like to say that you all are in no position to say what Natchez needs to do. Because, it is very apparent that you all in Ferriday don't know what to do yet. Why would you put someone back in office who did nothing-- absolutely nothing the whole time he was in office? He did nothing then and won't do anything now--for Ferriday. But I am sure he will help Vidalia in anyway that he can-- just like he did when he was in office the last time. When Glen left office, there was NO MONEY! Now that Gene has gotten money for the town, Glen all of a sudden wants to be mayor again. Go Figure! How silly can you all be? Gene gets the money and now Easy Eddie and the Party Rockers will spend it! Way to go Ferriday! I knew it was some bright people over there. But the question is where are they?!

Posted by fire39212 (anonymous) on March 9, 2008 at 1:20 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Well Timeless maybe he will throw a BIG OLD PARTY....You think..........

Being from Natchez look at the Mayor here....How can you say anything about a mayor??????

You know timeless the people from Ferriday could ask the same question about us from Natchez....If you are asking that question due to the mayor they elected.....

Posted by RealTalk (anonymous) on March 9, 2008 at 1:21 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Glen never said he wouldnt run again. Well at least the Isle of Capri wont get any. Quit playing the blame game. Glen won and its done suck it up!

Who cares? I'm from Natchez. I know I don't!

Posted by Termite (anonymous) on March 9, 2008 at 1:32 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Timeless - What money would you be talking about? By the way if there was all this money Mr. Allen has brought to the city, I wonder why he hadn't used some of it to clean-up the south entrance to the town. Take a look the next time you come through. Doesn't seem like it would actually take a big investment. What do you think?

Posted by timeless (anonymous) on March 9, 2008 at 1:32 p.m. (Suggest removal)

And for the record, I live outside of the city limits and don't get the pleasure of voting for the mayor! So maybe they can question those of you who voted for your current mayor.

Posted by timeless (anonymous) on March 9, 2008 at 1:38 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Well, I will tell you this, whatever is at the south entrance of the town was already there when Gene took over office. One did no less or no more than the other. And seems to me Glen did even less than the little Gene did or tried to do. Whenever you people could find him actually in his office!

Posted by Termite (anonymous) on March 9, 2008 at 1:40 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Timeless - Seems like you know a great deal about Ferriday, I was kind of wondering if you use to be a resident of our fair city and if so, why did you leave.

Posted by timeless (anonymous) on March 9, 2008 at 1:42 p.m. (Suggest removal)

No Sweetie, never lived there. Never want to!

Posted by Lily_Dream (anonymous) on March 9, 2008 at 1:55 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I cannot really comment on the town of Ferriday and the way it has been run. I can however say that a change needs to be made. I do not live in Ferriday, but I do conduct business there. I get disgusted when I have to enter Ferriday after passing the Shell gas station. There is a speed trap that gives you no time to decelerate.

Black Bayou Bridge Road from Hwy 84 is a dumping ground.

Mack Moore road and so many others look like a slum.

Houses are falling in from the roof.

With the recent rise in burglaries and business break-ins, one would wonder where are the "Boys and Girls in Blue" during these moments. You see them all day long driving up and down and tailing people until they intimidate them enough to make a traffic mistake, them "BAM", flashing lights.

With the rise in gas, why aren't some of these fellows pulled out of the patrol cars and put on bikes? Sounds foolish to some I am sure, but it can be done. What's the reason for all these Ferriday Police and Concordia Parish Sheriff Deputy cars sitting in employees yards? I mean especially when that officer has 2 or 3 personal vehicles ,in working order, also parked at home.

It seems that we who do not reside in Ferriday or Vidalia, have noticed many things that need to be changed. Why aren't the people in Ferriday standing up, taking notice of these things, and actually trying to do something about it? I would say that if you really wanted a change in the way your municipality is run, then you would do more than go to the polls to vote someone out. You would also attend City/Town council meetings and try to make a difference.

Posted by Termite (anonymous) on March 9, 2008 at 1:55 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Timeless - I am glad to know that, but some may say the same about Natchez, Ms. I can tell you that the comparison of the two isn't that much different, just on a larger scale.

Posted by kpage (anonymous) on March 9, 2008 at 2:42 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I believe that too, Termite.

timeless...the grant monies Gene supposedly brought the town is untrue. GLEN got those grants in motion and Gene took credit for them. Gene was also supposed to solve the water problem. He's had 4 years of empty promises. Also, during Glen's administration, "a tax election gave a pay raise to police and fire personnel. After taking office, Gene Allen recinded the pay raise." (Concordia Sentinel paid advertisement, March 5, 2008).

About the best thing Gene did for the town was get that 300 grand a year from Walmart cause he hassled the hell out of them. He also never cleaned up the town BECAUSE HE DIDN'T LIVE THERE!

Posted by ford30 (anonymous) on March 9, 2008 at 3:15 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Lily_Dream first of all what is wrong with deputy cars sitting in peoples yard?? First of all those deputies work different areas of this parish and if they are called out they have their car right there ready to go... so you are saying someone that works on lake st john should drive to vidalia get a car then go back to the lake for a call?? also if you don't have that many cars you end up using 4 or 5 cars 24/7 and the car will not last 6 months.... if you look around ACSO takes home cars and pretty much ever other sheriffs office in the vicinity.. a sheriffs office is a little different than a PD with a much broader area to cover... so yeah there are cars parked in employees yards and personally i'm glad because i have seen deputies leave their house on their off day and go to a major call in that car.. at no cost at all to the people of the parish.... just thought i would clarify the reason for this...

Congratulations to the newly elected Mayor Glen McGlothin! I just want to add that Bryce McGlothin if you grow up to be as committed to caring for Concordia Parish and our town of Ferriday as your daddy and most of his family then there is hope for a better community of all religious beliefs that live and worship here, all nationalities that live and go to school here and of course it's going to take everyone working together to make Ferriday and Concordia Parish a wonderful place to call home. Oh Erin and Mallory I know you and what you are made of McGlothin thru and thru. You know what you gotta do!

Glen, congratulations on being elected mayor. Just hope that things have not gotten so bad that you cannot straighten them out. I know you have the energy and the desire. It is so sad to see what has happened to this once proud town, a town where I grew up, went to school, cheered on the Mighty Bulldogs, and felt safe anywhere I went during that time. Please put your best efforts toward cleaning up the town, getting rid of drugs and drug dealers, and gettting some industry to help put people to work. With the experience you have gained in the past through working as economic director for Vidalia, you have made contacts that will be of help not only to Ferriday, but for the entire parish. Again, Congratulations to a most deserving person and Good Luck.

Posted by Lily_Dream (anonymous) on March 9, 2008 at 9:38 p.m. (Suggest removal)

to you Ford30:

Why would a deputy answer a call on his off day? Isn/t that the purpose of having additional manpower, so that others can have a day off! By the way, those cars and officesr are costing the people. You know TAXPAYERS!! So what you're telling me is that each Deputy and Police officer is assigned his very own official vehicle to drive while on and off duty.

Furthermore, if an officer is assigned to Lake St. John, certainly he should drive to Vidalia to get a vehicle and go to his post. He has to drive to Vidalia anyway to clock in and get his duty briefing doesn't he?

I didn't post my comments to bicker back and forth. I simply stated my observations and concerns. It is what it is;

Posted by Teach4Peace (anonymous) on March 9, 2008 at 9:44 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Everyone is congratulating Glen, but I have yet to read a post, that will answer my question. What WILL HE DO, this time around, that he did not accomplish before? Ferriday is in need of major enforcement on loitering, drug dealing, etc, all which make property and surroundings look bad. Unless people only care, when things happen to them, I don't understand why this town has been allowed to look like such an eyesore? Yes, parents need to parent, but I remember a phrase when I was younger the old folks used to say, if your mama doesn't straighten you, the police will. No one is saying the police should raise your children, but clearly, Ferriday is in dire need of someone who will come in, use the departments to clean up this city, and clearly ENFORCE rules other than major focus on traffic violations.

When Glen McGlothin was elected mayor the first time he did a lot for Ferriday and now he is a politician and will promise all and deliver nothing.

Gene Allen was a crook and a thug. His police traps were a disgrace. During Katina his cops pulled over relief crews on the way to New Orleans and ticketed them. At least now we can drive through Ferriday without fear of entrapment.

can't say what he will do Teach i think maybe they are hoping he will clean up the drugs, loitering and thing of that nature....GA sure didn't.....Has anyone heard anymore aboutt he incident where the lady was trying to turn in a drug deal????

Posted by Teach4Peace (anonymous) on March 10, 2008 at 6:54 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Roy, so far, you have the answer, but again, I think to run a long as long as he did, and to not have accomplished much on getting it to look decent, is shameful. People wonder why NOTHING ever happens? "To do the same thing over and over, and expect different results, IS the definition of insanity. Had I not known this was the fella who has been in office before, and didn't do much, I would have wished for totally different, FRESH new candidates. I don't know much about Ferriday politics, but I do know, politics is politics, everywhere.

Posted by destiny (anonymous) on March 10, 2008 at 7:23 a.m. (Suggest removal)

How soon we forget.... Glen started several projects in his last term that would have benefited Ferriday a great deal, but time ran out on him and some silly people in Ferriday decided to vote for a crook to go in there and put the brakes on all his good ideas. And look what they got for four years. Now Glen has to go back in there and clean house again and start form scratch. He's got more gumption and forgivness for the citizens than I, for I probably would have let them wallered in their own stupidity for a while longer. I know Glen will help Ferriday just as much as he did in Vidalia, after all it's his home town and he wants only the brightest future for his children in their home town. He will bring it back. Just give him the chance to do so. I do not live there any longer but I'm as anxious as one of the citizens. At least Ferriday and Vidalia have mayors they can be proud of as they work together for a better Concordia Parish.

Posted by undercoverbrother (anonymous) on March 10, 2008 at 7:39 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Lily, you are not a cop and it shows...No one cares for police unless they need them! Leave the deputies alone. They do not "clock" in first of all, and they do not always have shift briefings. And yes, deputies do indeed work alot of their days off for major calls. If something is going on in a certain area and the sheriff's office needs additional units they start calling off duty deputies that live in that area to help out. Not only that but it is a proven fact that more visible units deter crime just from being seen. Again, this is something you would know if you were in law enforcement! I am no fan of Randy Maxwell, but it is extremely smart to give deputies take home cars for many reasons that are definitely a plus for the parish. And you are also wrong about the "taxpayers" eating all of this bill as well, because in fact, federal grants cover quite a chuck of the bill. And by the way, deputies and their families pay taxes as well. Now to Glen, congrats, I'm glad you won...I only hope that you clean up the Ferriday Police Dept. You have several "bad apples" working there that need to be fired from the get go...The dept needs to do way more community policing and a lot less traffic enforcement.

So time ran out before Glen could get the ball to rolling, or before he could finish the ball rolling? LOL!

Posted by daris (anonymous) on March 10, 2008 at 10:46 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I have read some of these comments. First of all when Glen was in there Ferriday was looking just like it look now, for the exception Wal-Mart was still here then. I am not pointing the finger at Glen nor Gene because honestly it still the same as it always been "DEAD" all of you that are pointing fingers why don't you come together and make it better, instead of always complaining. Yes I agreed the policeman had bad attitudes that's the only thing I had against it. But let me say this the only reason you all keep saying you're glad Glen is back is because you never got speeding tickets. Yes, you could go through here in your fancy cars or if you knew him personally you could get out of your ticket and trust me you know what I mean. So the one time that you start getting tickes you complaining but long as the shoe was on the other foot you heard nothing. And no this is not a black issue this is the truth. I know some people personally that got a ticket and called Glen it was taken care of. So you see that's what the problem was because that's all you keep hollering about. As for the seat belts that wasn't Gene's law that was the "STATE LAW" you know honestly since they press down on giving tickets I didn't hear of too many wrecks in Ferriday anymore, so yes now you can go back to speeding, yeilding at stop signs instead of making complete stops. Again my problem was only with the cops attitudes, they could have been a little better and a little more understanding. So maybe since you all have what you want you would help Glen clean this town up. As far as the drug dealers they were still here when Glen was in there.

Oh my, daris.... finally somebody I can say I wholeheartedly agree with!!!!!Why are the tickets a problem? If you break the law, you should be punished. Point blank!!! Mr. Allen did alot more than people give him credit for. Way to go Glen..... I think NOT! Just for the sake of helping Ferriday PD enforce the seatbelt law, how many fatal accidents have we had in Ferriday in the last 4 years. (Mr. Allen's term) NONE!Try ths Sheriff's Office stats. We got rid of the man who you all think did nothing. If he didn't do anything else, he helped save lives. Also, if you can remember back when Glen was Mayor.... Ferriday's water was BROWN. Yes he may have gotten the ball rolling but don't you think somebody had to keep it rolling. Man how quickly we pass judgement.

I agree with Negotiator, get rid of that sorry excuse for a Mayor in Natchez! Natchez has no room to talk about Mayors, that is a fact! West hired back a police officer that I heard with my own ears on audio, try to bribe another police officer to let a drug dealer friend go. This police officer was fired, but west hired him back. And the Natchez Board of Aldermen, don't get me started! They do nothing for the Natchez Police Dept, they vote themselves raises...lol What a joke. The police commissioner is a drug dealer. The Clerk of Court embezzled the city's money, and the citizens voted him back into office!!! What a place...So Natchez, please stop talking about Ferriday. I could go on for days. I worked on the Police Dept for years and I have plenty of stories on plenty of elected officials in Natchez. Natchez and Ferriday needs someone to come in and clean house!

Teach4Peace, I have read some of your pervious post. In one post you said you were in Jackson, Ms. Shouldn't you be concerned about the crime and poverty in that area? I hope you are not an educator. I wouldn't won't that negative attitude being taught to the children.

well now phatbaby... lets talk about ferriday if we may... i think writing tickets for 1-5 mph over the speed limit is ridiculous.. also i believe the officers should have discretion to give someone a warning which they do not have under gene allens term.. also you want to talk about fatalities in wrecks in the city of ferriday where their speed limit used to be 25 mph on ALL straight roads... now they have raised the speed limit to 35 and guess what there still hasn't been any fatalities but that was one of their reasons for writing tickets to people going 26 or 27 mph is so it wouldn't be any fatalities... See you mention look at the sheriffs office statistics well you can't compare a city of 25 or 35 mph with a parish or county with speeds up to 55 with winding country roads and no street lights every 50 to 100 ft. that makes a big difference phatbaby... not to mention your talking about a lot more vehicles and area to contend with.. the area itself makes a huge difference let alone the trees, curves, livestock, and so forth..
If an officer stops someone for not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign and has never stopped this person before WHAT is wrong with giving them a warning and tell them if you are caught again i'm gonna have to issue you a citation?? whats wrong with that but no they have to write them because thats what they had to do... that i have a problem with..
The next thing would be spending the majority of the time writing these tickes with thugs on the corner selling crack, coke, weed, drinking their 40's on the corner ganged up like a bunch of hoodlums.. but hey nothing wrong with that.. also nothing wrong with someone driving from lake st john to a burglar alarm at their place of business in ferriday to find what??? that fpd hasn't even got to the call yet.. and secondly to find that someone is running out of the building.. and where is ferriday??? oh they on ee wallace writing someone a seatbelt ticket for not wearing it properly.. or they may be writing someone a parking ticket for pulling up in the fire lane at ferriday market because they are picking up their elderly mother with a cane that can't walk very well.. thats stuff that people do not forget and will never forget..
Well thats just a very few of the problems that have been going on in ferriday.. hope you enjoy reading..

Sweethearts, I am a realist, and again, someone clean up Ferriday, and yes, Jackson, MS needs it too! When you voicing the truth, are not negative, or are you realists as well. Please people, there are some parts of Jackson that are wonderful, as a matter of fact, it has its darn good parts, however, that's every city. Ferriday, a town, sad to say, has EE Wallace Blvd running through it, the view from there is sad at best. When I venture down other streets, not so great either. I want for Ferriday, what I want for this country. Someone who will get into office, and will do more than make promises. If that makes me negative sweethearts, then I am negative.

As far as my teaching, no need to worry yourselves about that either. I am a shining star in my profession amongst my peers, just stay focused on what you do, for your paycheck.

One more thing, for a person who has had their go of being mayor of a city, more than one time around, and for him to be so touted, is very insane and quite silly. I wish he would shock me, and do a VERY different thing, than what he has done the times he was in office. It would be so nice to ride through Ferriday, and see some enforcement at work, regarding property, loitering, etc. I am sure there are zoning laws on the books. I am sure there are laws already present on property owners throwing away trash, keeping junk cars out of their yards, moving the loiterers off their property, and if the owners won't do it, that is what enforcement is for. Let's make it happen, and stop acting like their has not been anything wrong, BEFORE Gene Allen, who very well, may not have helped matters either.

Ferriday has alot of cleaning up to do just like Natchez does. I know that Glen McGlothin will do a better job than Gene Allen. First, he should consider firing all of the idiots on the FPD force. He should hire a new police force that has potential. We need officers that do not let power get to their heads and are there to help people not to harass. This would be a good starting point.

Im listening to these comments and thinking Ferriday is only a hop and a skip away from Vidalia and Natchez. so sooner or later what ever is happening in Ferriday with the drug dealers and other crimes will spread to Vidalia and Natchez. espically if the tourist and more gambling come to town. Maybe its already there but Vidalia and Natchez has it hidden better like inside their gambling and hotels. If you take a chance and get caught be adult about it and take responsibility for your mistakes. Police dept and sheriffs are there to protect us. There is probably a few bad apples but I think every business has a few bad apples.

Here's a good idea.Since the mayors of past and present really havent done anything, just level the town of Ferriday, and move it.Like they did with the town of Vidalia years ago. That will solve all the problems. :)
