Arrests made in attempted carjacking

Published Saturday, March 15, 2008

NATCHEZ — Natchez Police have arrested two men in connection with a Monday night attempted carjacking.

Kenyon Terrell Carter, 26, 39 Grove Acres Road, and Cotrell Rose, 26, 137 Lewis Drive, have been charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and attempted kidnapping.

A local woman called the police from a gas station at U.S. 61 and Colonel John Pitchford Parkway.

Police Chief Mike Mullins said Carter reportedly hid in the backseat of a woman’ car at approximately 8:30 Monday night before jumping out and ordering her to drive.

The woman had just returned to her car, which was parked at a gas pump, after paying the cashier.

The woman jumped out of her car and the man ran away. She was not physically harmed.

“Through the investigation we were able to gather enough evidence to charge these individuals with these crimes,” Mullins said.

Mullins said the investigation will continue as more evidence develops.

Carter was arrested at a family member’s home in the Woodville area and Rose was arrested at Susie B. West Apartments.

There will be no bond for either until arraignment Monday morning.

They need to be flogged in a public place and put away for 25 years. NO PAROLE.

I read an email a few months ago that I felt contained important information that I would like to pass along. The lady being carjacked escaped unharmed in this case which is good news but many are not as fortunate. If you are ever being threatened in a parking lot, most of us nowadays have an important tool that is easy to forget. It's the horn alarm on our keychain. Just press the alarm and your car will start honking unti it is disabled. A couple of times I have accidently enabled the alarm and recall the reaction of those around me. Many look annoyed but at least they look. Hopefully this information will be helpfull and I hope nobody ever has to use it.

Ladies, alway's lock your car even to pay for gas. I am trying to learn to be more aware of the one's around me.
It's sad we now live in fear of putting gas in our car.

My mom's friend almost got mugged (or worse) when she came out of a grocery store one night. She said she beat him off with her big ole set of keys, you know the big wad with all the different keychains, bells and whistles. To begin with, she said walk with a few keys in your palm with the sharp ends jutting out between your fingers. "That'll stab 'em", she says. Just punch with your fist and the keys will do your damage.
Oh, and don't be blabbing on your cell phone when you walk to your car alone. That's telling the perp you aren't paying attention. And,if one hand is in your purse as you walk, they'll never know if you have your hand on a gun or knife.

Posted by kpage (anonymous) on March 15, 2008 at 7:50 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Good idea, sayitloud. Can't you get it at the pawn shop. Like the one by the bowling alley? Do they sell it where any weapons are sold?

Shouldn't there be a federal charge on these guys since they kidnapped the woman by ordering her to drive with them in the car?

Posted by darylwalker (anonymous) on March 15, 2008 at 8:26 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I believe the do sell pepper spray at Natchez Pawn Shop next to the bowling alley. As babev1 said, pepper spray is not always effective, but more often than not, it will work. I've been sprayed with it myself to be certified to carry it at work, and trust me, it's not a pleasant experience.

I bought some pepper spray, or it may have been mace, at the Sports Center a few years ago. It was located at the checkout counter in the front of the store. Not sure if that is still the case, but you could call and ask.

I'm glad you guys are thinking of good self-defense and security measures

How about -- LOOK IN THE BACKSEAT BEFORE YOU OPEN YOUR FRONT DOOR, and yes get your head out of the clouds and instead of walking around with that cell phone glued to your face, pay attention to what's going on around you, a little common sense in a parking lot at night, by a major highway will go a long way, plus -- pack your .45!!!

Posted by Krogers (anonymous) on March 15, 2008 at 9:07 a.m. (Suggest removal)

And let me say this, it's pretty sad that business owners, don't give a damn about security on their premises,

If these gas station owners and workers would pay attention and RUN OFF the little bad asses that want to hang around and are obvious wannabe gangsters there would be a lot less opportunity for trouble.

Around my business I try to keep up a mental perimeter and monitor what's up in the parking lot, if mini-terrorists (an affectionate term I like to use of the local thuggy kids that are looking for an excuse to go to jail) are hanging around I will go out and ask them what's up and to BEAT IT!! If they mouth off, well then call the police and give em HELL!!! We've got to take back our streets and INSIST on common decency, safety, LAW AND ORDER!!

Nut'em!

Posted by Krogers (anonymous) on March 15, 2008 at 9:22 a.m. (Suggest removal)

the thing about pepper spray , mace, etc

you have to get it out, turn the knob, point it and hit em with the spray

I have had an experience with pepper spray before - a woman tried to spray me, I was arresting her for shoplifting, she attempted to escape, I held her in an arm bar (hammerlock) but felt like I might break her arm, so I let her go, she then reached in her purse and came out with the pepper spray, before she could get it ready and spray me, I just snactched it out of her hands. Her nails were too long to allow her to use it quickly, she then went back in her purse and came out with a knife, which I also just snatched out of her hands, she then went bizerk and starting breaking stuff in the store, so I then got her in a headlock and gently took her down, too bad she busted her lip on the floor and was knocked out for a few minutes, then the police came. She was 17 (but a big girl, I though she was older), a straight A student, on the church choir, and it was her second offense. She was found guilty on all charges, then later her mother tried to charge me with assault, which was a joke, but had to go to court anyway. All charges against me were dropped, but I had to spend money on a lawyer, good lesson for me, next time I'll just represent myself, and not allow a perp that second chance to pull a weapon. Crazy huh???

So the moral of this story -- it might feel comforting to have some pepper spray in your purse, but it's likely you won't be able to get it out in time to use it, as generally an attacker looks for a weak, stupid, or distracted victim; then pounces when that victim is unawares, taking advantage with sudden unexpected initiative. Which is always the best choice in war -- strike first. So that is what you really have to do -- NOT allow the opportunity for unexpected first strike. Just be aware, train with basic martial arts - kicks, punches, blocks, throws, joint locks, vital point strikes, etc. which you have at constant readiness - your own hands, feet, elbows, knees, head butt, hips, shoulders, these are weapons that you can have ready instantly. MAKE SENSE??

a little training will go a long way if you apply yourself

Dont they have pepper spray or mace that will go on your key chain?

Posted by Demise (anonymous) on March 15, 2008 at 10:36 a.m. (Suggest removal)

You can get pepper spray at most any pawn shop. I recommend the the 45 acp. It is much more affective. If they get back up after that, i dont think they will mess with you again.

kpage - proud of your comment and your mom's friend. That's a good idea to have your hand in your purse- with knife, pistol, and cell phone ready. Put 911 on the A key for instant dialing. When your adrenaline is pumping and your blood is boiling, it is hard to dial/ punch buttons. When your mind & body goes into the fight or flight mode caused by your instinctive mind dumping adrenaline into your blood, it is hard to do even the simplest coordinated movement. Stick to basics.

keys make a good additon to basic punch and strike, also use in a clawing, raking motion across the face, you might get lucky and put their eyes out!!

don't forget the ole punt to the testicles, works every time, but try to lure them into a front facing stance first, low kicks work good if they put their hands on you, but you have to know how to keep your balance while resisting their push/pull attack.

Get in a good martial arts school and get out on the mat and mix it up, it'll be good for you. Good excercise, lots of fun, and good combat experience.

Southernbelle- yes it is very important to make a lot of noise and attract attention

honk your horn, yell

yelling is really good - it might convince your attacker you are not an easy target and he'll leave, also you will gain confidence in resisting verbally, then resist physically if necessary. Yelling will also help you tense up your body and not get hurt as easily as you are being struck. That's why karate people do all that yelling, conditioning for confrontation, and all the above mentioned things.

This is a very personal crime. This lady will be traumatized forever. Judges should use the max penalty and not let them off with a wrist slap if they are friends of the family.
They try this with my family they have a 200 grain hollowpoint to dig out of their body first. Then I will pee on them.
But before they go to prison I still say nut'em.

I'm with you on this Hardcorp

I apologize for being so hard on you the other day about politics

I can tell you're a good man

Krogers sometimes I like to play devil's advocate just to get a rise. You and I both know that religion and politics are two things that are mostly subjective and it does no good to argue about them. You can't change people's minds.

I also apologize to you and redusmfan. Too long in the Corps. Messin' with people is funny sometimes. I'll try to watch it.

Back on subject, my oldest daughter-in-law had her purse snatched and was knocked down fairly brutally in Jackson a few years ago when she and my son lived up there. She still won't go to a convenience store at night. If only I could have found the vermin who did this. I'm thinking throat punch then knee lift to nose and piehole area. Oh well I would probably be in Parchman.
It's a beautiful day in Natchez to be above ground.

WOW Krogers...sounds like a plug for your martial arts school......whatev.
Thanks to everyone letting me know where to get pepper spray! I do appreciate you and for myself and young daughter I will feel much safer with either this or mace.

Here comes a question most of you readily know but I don't. Person above suggested putting 911 on your cell in the A spot. How do you do that?

Also, ladies and gents - ride and keep door locked at all times. When I am at the pump, I lock all doors and then when ready to reenter, I only need to open the driver's door and then I quickly lock it up entering.

If you leave your car unlocked, be sure and check it -- back seat, look around under if you are able. I am handicapped and cannot lean down to look under the vehicle, so keep mine locked. Locked vehicle is no guarantee, but in a lighted space, stand a better chance of no one getting in,

And, when leaving any store, before heading out to your vehicle, take a swift look around and see what there is to see. Have your keys already in your hand and walk with eyes watching your surrounds. Keep keys in the assault position. If you suspect anything, go back inside and get a store guard or personnel to walk you to your vehicle. You can even call police for an escort. I worked nights and if I felt it unsafe, would call police for an escort to my vehicle as I was alone. Most evenings I would move my vehicle to directly in front of the exit door and then I would look through the windows and doors to make sure I did not see anyone loitering. Someone caught me off guard one night but I was lucky, he was propped against the side of the building out of sight, but was watching police a half block away arrest someone. It scared me for sure and after that I took every precaution.

(i see they are FINALLY building a new dollar general out towards washington!! to take the old ones place! THANK GOODNESS) any way back to the story... PEPPER SPRAY DOES WORK and i think they should sell it AT ALL STORES!! right in the front!
lol i read where some one had to be sprayed to become 'certified' to carry it.. my grandmother use to have it on her key change and not knowing i sprayed it needless to say it cleared out the WHOLE HOUSE FOR A GOOD 10 MINS! i can only imagine what it feels like to have that stuff directly sprayed on you!!

Take a can in your ruck for when you go eat at El Dya Ree Esta. Goes good on dem dere chimichangas. Just make sure arrow is towards your face. They do that so you can be sure it's pointed towards an attacker's eyes.

We,re too stupid and too lient on criminals. They laugh at us everyday..Listen to the WIllie Nelson song..we need to put a few more of them in the ground. Thugs and murderers
only understand one thing. A large bullet placed behind the right earlobe. That will attract their attention. They don,t give a squat about laws,us,kids, others, neighbors,
friends,family,dogs,cats,life or any living thing...CRACK
is their main focus or some other drug of choice. They do what they do and bond out and keep doing it. They buy or steal their drugs first above all or just for the money.
Stealing and Killing are Primary. Everything else is secondary...You must fight fire with fire. We,re not even spanking their hands good. They all sit in jail what little time they spend in it and laugh and joke and just start all over, day after day..Do the math

Pepperspray is illegal unless you take a training and then you can use it in some areas..Never take it to airport or on a public school campus. I would never buy it second hand.
Good luck and the key chain with panic button is an excellent idea.
