Suit filed in Wilkinson County election
Published Friday, March 21, 2008
WOODVILLE — Three individuals have filed suit to try to put a halt to the specially called Wilkinson County Democratic primary do-over.
Wilkinson County residents Robert Morgan, James Jolliff Jr. and Eugene Tolliver Jr. filed the suit with the U.S. District Court in Jackson alleging several election laws would be violated if the election is to continue.
The suit also alleges the way the election will be conducted could potentially lead to discrimination against black voters in Wilkinson County, a group the suit describes as “politically cohesive.”
The election is scheduled to take place April 15.
The suit names the Wilkinson County Democratic Executive Committee, the Wilkinson County election commission, the state board of election commissioners and the as of yet unknown special master for the election as defendants.
The state board of election commissioners is composed of Attorney General Jim Hood, Gov. Haley Barbour and Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann
Judge Jim Persons ordered the new election after a months-long election contest over the results of the Aug. 9, 2007 Democratic primary.
During the contest, Persons decided to throw out all absentee, affidavit and curbside ballots because the court could not be assured they had not been tampered with in the time between the election and the beginning of the contest, in November.
Persons ruled that the will of the voters of Wilkinson County could not be determined without the paper ballots, and thus a new election must be called.

The way I look at it, if they want to cheat, they're gonna find a way to do it, even if the governer, secretary of state, and attorney general are hovering around 24/7.
Come on people, vote fairly. Take pride in your town, state, and in America. We each are links that are connected together to form this country. Dont be a weak link, for goodness sakes. Don't let us down. Just vote fairly.

It seems to me that there are two versions of being fair. Fairnesss by one group and fairness by another group. Everyone knows that 17 whites had no right to throw out over 500 absentee, curbside or affidavit ballots of mostly black voters without examining a single ballot. Now, was this FAIR!

No offense, lovelyday but those absentee, curbside, and affidavit ballots had more fingerprints on them than the county jail.

Kpage: We all know that there is this certain group of people who want everyone to think that something was wrong with those ballots. Where is the proof??? The question still remains who gave 17 white members of the Wilkinson County Democratic Committee permission to disenfranchise over 500 black citizens of Wilkinson County. If someone fingerprints were on them the question still remains that who gave them the right to take away the voting rights of our black citizens. Stop trying to pass the buck by saying something was wrong and how would you know that when they DID NOT EXAMINE A SINGLE BALLOT.

How do you know that it was over 500 black voters? There were no white voters’ absentee ballots thrown out? I believe the reason the 17 committee members never looked at the ballots was because the Circuit Clerk and Easter would not allow them to examine them therefore they all were suspect. The integrity of these ballots could not be established by the majority of the committee members because Mon Cree and Circuit Clerk employees refused to allow any examination of any of the ballots. The job of the committee members is to represent the voters to ensure the integrity of the elections but Master Mon decided he was the dictator and Wilkinson County is not part of a democracy. The committee members did the right thing regardless how long this stays in court or how much it cost.

Spanky: Continue to paint the picture you want others to see. I know how many black because the absentee voters list was posted in each precinct and on the door of the Circuit Clerk's office. There were very few white voters that voted absentee because this had been planning all along that the 17 whites had the majority of the committee and would conspire together so that no paper ballots would count...remember they were in the majority on the committee. It was already circulating in Wilkinson County BEFORE the election that the absentee ballots would not count. THIS IS A CONSPIRACY!!! What happen in Wilkinson County was not something that happened overnight. This was a well thought out planned that BACK FIRED! A cetain group of people set up phone banks to call federal and state authorites before the election to make it seemed as if so much was happening in Wilkinson County. The federal and state authorites see that these were nothing but IDIOTS!!!
You are crazy to say that it is right to disenfranchise black voters. BUT... that is the way some of you feel!

Spanky: By the way we do not care how long it stays in court or how much is cost. I agree with you on that.

I know for a fact that all the absentee ballots were not black voters because there were several of my family members that voted absentee and have said that they will never vote in another election in Wilkinson county because of all the fraud that is taking place.... Enough is enough this is not a racial issue it is RIGHT and WRONG issue and the way the election was counted was wrong...We would come out better letting the family pet run for election the way things are going right now....They call in people from outside the couny to oversee things and the people still aren't satisfied what's going to happen next.

bear45 stop trying to act as if you are not Africian American. I did not say every single ballot was African American what I said was that only a few were white voters.
europeanamerican: just make sure your ship will not capsize first. Stop trying to make people think something is about to happen to "Captain Morgan" he is only taking a stand for the disenfranchised voters something you all should be doing.

as for you lovelyday I am as white as they come and don't have to pretend anything yes my family is from Wilkinson COunty but currently I live in Adams County
Posted by Spanky (anonymous) on March 21, 2008 at 12:57 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I believe Judge Persons is taking a stand for the disenfranchised voters by having a do-over election and having someone oversee it since obviously King Mon can not be trusted. lovelyday, where did you get that phone banks were set up and this was preplanned, the committee had no way of knowing the outcome until the votes were counted which by the way was done in secret as for as the machines go. Not once has Mon Cree down loaded the machines in the publics eye, it is always done out of site. If this had been such an honest election why was all of the majority of the committee members denied their duty to participate in the election process and why is it that the machine votes are down loaded in secrecy and why were the majority committee members denied access to the boxes?
bear45 please do not give up on the elections in Wilkinson County just yet, stay in there and help continue to fight this corruption by voting. Have someone in your family participate by being a poll watcher on Election Day or go to the court house when the voting is being done and see how it is conducted. You can possibly have more positive influence than you may believe you do.

I hope they start putting the burgers on the grill so they can entice some more votes with free burgers for all. LOL. If you haven't been following the news, you probably don't get what I'm saying. Someone testified under oath that they were giving a hamburger to go vote. LOL. Only in Wilkinson County.

Lovelylday: You are absolutely correct, this has been a set up all along. A certain group of people started phone banks and writing letters to federal and state authorities about black county officials and their supporters before the election. They wanted the authorites to think that so many illegal things were happening in the county.
Spanky: Since the committee wanted to only count the machine totals...this should explain one thing...and that is ...if they were done in the secrecy of the Circuit Clerk then he should have benefited and not his opponent. How could bear45 have any positive influence on the election when it was stated earlier that he/she lives in Adams County or did he/she mean hwy 24 west.
Posted by Spanky (anonymous) on March 21, 2008 at 2:08 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I didn't see the post where they live but I believe I remember where he/she had family in Wilkinson County that voted and this is what I said, "Have someone in your family participate by being a poll watcher on Election Day or go to the court house when the voting is being done and see how it is conducted. You can possibly have more positive influence than you may believe you do." Yes I did say you in the last sentence and I meant a legal voting resident of Wilkinson Count. I apologize for not making that clearer. All the people in Wilkinson County want is to know when the election totals have been counted is it has been done with as much integrity and honesty as possible. By encouraging more voters to participate in the election process the harder it would be for anyone to high jack the election and have just a few un-scrupulous people running a dictatorship.

I have pondered this question since 3:00 this morning and can not come up with a reasonable or any answer, for that matter. Please help.
How will or would "the way the election will be conducted could potentially lead to discrimination against black voters in Wilkinson County"?

WHAT ARE U SAYING

Sickandtired,
I think EuropeanAmerican is referring to the article that is connected with this thread we are posting on. It says that a suit was filed because the parties filing were afraid of the disenfranchisement of blacks if the rescheduled election moves forward. EurAm was the first person to comment on this thread around 3 AM and since then he is wondering how it would disenfranchise black voters if they held the election as scheduled. I hate to be speaking for him but I think that's what he meant. Thanks.

Thank you Swapmeet, that is exactly what I was wondering.

...the winners (jackson & hollins) was declared once and they will be again whenever the election is held...it is not a race issue about blacks and whites...it has turned into a race about black on black.....a wolf in sheep clothing////// it time to move forward and to better things for wilkinson county with jackson & hollins.

Sickandtired I will have to agree with you wholeheartedly about this becoming a black on black situation and Swapmeet there are several sheep in wolves clothing in the Political Aspects of Wilkinson County....and like you said there is a big need for a change in Wilkinson County before something happens that cannot be changed, from the looks of it there is no telling what may happen before all of this is over.......

May I please ask why my comment was removed? People will think that I was being offensive. For those of you who didn't know, I just listed some things that have gone on with the previous sheriff administration and how scary it is for Wilkinson Country. I know for a fact everything I commented on. Just want everyone to know it was not cursing or being ugly b/c I don't resort to that kind of stuff.

Out of all that's said and done , and so much blame placed on people thats not at fault, you all need to stop and think and take hard long look at the things you are saying. No more is going on with sheriff office now than it was before sheriff jackson was elected. We need to pray and try to get on one accord instead of trying to pull each down all the time.
