Downtown Development celebrates Easter on bluff

NATCHEZ — Over plates of fried chicken and dyed eggs, families from the Natchez area gathered on the bluff near the gazebo to celebrate Easter Sunday.

The event, a first-ever of its kind, was called the Easter Bonnet Promenade.

Director of the Downtown Development Association Carrie Lambert said the event was a way to bring families together and give them a chance gather as a community to celebrate Easter.

“This is going to be a lot of fun for everyone,” she said.

And everyone at Sunday’s event appeared to be having a great deal of fun.

Stella Golden showed up with several members from her family.

She said the wide variety of activities for all ages made the event especially appealing for families.

“There’s a lot of good flavor here,” she said.

Several local artists set up tents to display their wares.

And for the kids, Lollie the clown made balloon animals and painted faces.

The star of the day, the Easter Bunny, also made an appearance at the event.

As the rabbit walked through the crowd many children were equally amazed and horrified.

Several ran screaming from his fuzzy paws.

An Easter egg hunt proved more popular than the actual Easter Bunny with the younger crowd.

As kids ran across the bluff searching for plastic eggs, parents socialized and took in the sites from local artists.

Artist D.W. Bryant displayed a wide selection of hand crafted wooden bowls.

“This is a great opportunity for all of us (artists),” he said. “It shows people what they have right here in their own town.”

While the promenade was only in its first year it was still successful and Lambert is already looking to the future.

“Next year it should be even better,” she said.

This is good entertainment for the children. Not much religion involved in Easter or Christmas now adays. The Christmas spirit is gone the day after and we nail Jesus back up on the cross the day after Easter.

I was pleased as punch yesterday (Easter) when my 12-year old, with my other two little ones in tow, asked me, "What's the true meaning of Easter?" I was so proud these three kids are mine! I told them the true meaning, then they googled it. Now the little ones know Jesus is not the Easter bunny and that there is a reason for this holiday that has nothing to do with Peter Cottontail.
We had a great day, by the way!!!

I only wish I had known about the Easter on the bluff event yesterday.

No kidding...was it announced? Or only open to a select few families?

i heard an announcement on the radio (97.3) and i heard it was in the paper. my kids brought home a sheet in their back pack and i knew about it because i volunteered to help with some stuff. i guess it is like a lot of things. it just gets missed. anyway, i think this is something that downtown is planning on doing every year, so plans can be made next year. i heard it is going to be 2-4, instead of 12-4. if you want to come early and picnic you can, but it also gives people a little more flexibility to have lunch with family after church. also, easter will be later next year, so hopefully it won't be windy and cold. anyway, it was nice and we will go next year for sure. the kids had fun.

There was a top of the morning article on Wednesday I think. If you don't get the paper and never go to the opinions on line you wouldn't have heard of it.
