Burglary case sent to grand jury, men still in jail
Published Wednesday, April 2, 2008
NATCHEZ — The man fitting the description of the burglar responsible for a string of home-invasion burglaries this winter appeared in court Tuesday.
John Arthur Thomas, 41, and another man, Daniel Butler, 26, were arrested in March on burglary charges.
They have not been charged with any additional crimes in connection with the home-invasion burglaries.
Thomas, 130 Ruby Road, Ferriday and Butler, 354 Doty Road, Ferriday were bound over to the grand jury at their preliminary hearing Tuesday.
No bond was set because both men have parole holds from the Louisiana Department of Corrections.
Police Chief Mike Mullins said the Natchez Police Department will present their case to the Adams County Grand Jury.
Mullins has yet to say that the men were responsible for the high profile burglaries in town, but he did say they fit the bill.
Thomas was arrested when walking down Auburn Avenue at 2:30 a.m. with a flashlight and a screwdriver in his pocket.
He was charged with felony possession of burglary tools.
He was then later charged with two counts of car burglary when searches of his car and home seized evidence linked to two car burglaries in the St. Charles Street area in November.
Butler was arrested at the same time as Thomas when he was found driving slowly on Magnolia Avenue and was charged with not having a driver’s license.
He was later picked up on probation violation on Mississippi parole for possession of cocaine. After he was picked up he was charged with conspiracy to commit burglary. Thomas also has 13 prior burglary-related charges in Louisiana.

I didn't know possession of a screw driver and flashlight while walking at night was probable cause to arrest someone and was felony. Does it sound someone carrying these items sound suspicious, yes and no? Did they just happen to leave the all night hardware store? It just doesn't sound like good police work Barney Fife.
You may have the right guy, but you need more evidence so this guy doesn't walk at his hearing.
Driving slowly is a crime? In some cities this type of driving may warrant a ticket especially on the freeway but certainly not in residental areas...and if further investigation yeilds an outstanding warrants...well yes...but again, NPD you got to come to court with something more than the suspect was driving slowly. Perhaps he was lost, or a cautious driver, or even experienced sudden illness that may have contributed to the decision to drive slowly because of pain.
Come on "law enforcers" do your job and stop being silly You are going to mess up and put the guys back on the streets if they happens upon a good trail lawyer

Well said, cchat123. The real high profile burglar was questioned, talked to [with daddy at his side] and released. He was never named by the newspaper or charged. If these two men are guilty, by all means convict them, but we all know they are not the one who had this town on edge a while back. They should be charged with the wrong they did, but not the crimes comitted by the "rich little white boy". The more things change, THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME.'

Guilty??? With no trial? Gee--why do you hate the US Constitution so much?
It is interesting that since these bozos are in jail the break-ins have stopped.
Have you ever heard of getting them on something small until the larger case can be developed?
I say great police work!!
"rich little white boy"--nice try--he is know for his drug use, but not for B&E and he had an alibi. Why do you have to make everything racial???????

I would not want to say that I would want just anyone picked up for the reasons given in the story. However, this is for you guys that are always preaching down the police department that they do not do their jobs. I am sure they ran information through their records to determine to pick up these people. If for no other reason, they prevented another robbery, these people were suspicious. We don't know the facts from the story. ND is not going to give away, hopefully, any information that can be used for their trial or that will prejudice a prospective juror. You guys are not satisfied in any case - just down the police department. Driving slowly in a residential area can be suspicious and I am glad the police are doing their jobs.
Now, Mr. policeman, come to my neighborhood between 11 and 1 am and catch the individual(s) blaring their radios with a thud thud that shakes the house, wakes me up!
PS: hope you guys are not selected for jury duty!

Let me see, I'm from out of state and at 2:30 A.M I am walking down a street with a screw driver and flash light without a reasonable excuse. That sure sounds like probable cause to me. My buddy by the way is creeping down another area trolling for our next victim. What would you expect the police to do when they discover this type of activity at this time of the night with all of the burglary that has occurred prior to this time? Personally I believe the NPD did a fine job.

The subject poster that seem to be taking up for the two suspicious persons sounds like a defense attorney or a "rights" person. The NPD has enough probable cause to stop the subjects to begin with! Support the NPD, ACSO, ad the MHP! Also, thanks Robert33!

One other point on the "rich white boy" comment. Aren't the 2 guys who are being held white? The article didn't state race, so I am assuming they are...
Interesting how some infer otherwise.

I don't get the paper. From the club they were looking for from other reports I assumed they were black. But that's all I could do is make assumptions. I had no clue until you just informed me of their skin color.

One of these idiots was arrested at the foot of my driveway. I suspect I may have been on the list for one of their "special" treatments, and would just have to have killed them. I say kudos to the NPD.

Come on people.....READ the article!!
I quote..... "searches of his car and home seized evidence linked to two car burglaries in the St.
Thomas also has 13 prior burglary-related charges in Louisiana."
Now seriously--would any of you want these two roaming around your property at 2:30 in the morning???? I know I don't!!!
By evidence found in his possession, one is already considered a theif....and the other one is obviously an addict to cocaine or a dealer. AND..... THIRTEEN priors on burglary related charges!!!!! Why defend these two????? How MUCH MORE do some people need???? Not so innocent in my opinion if this much has already been determined about them both!

robert33---Don't hate the constitution, just don't believe in "with liberty and justice for all". Served in the military for many years during Vietnam. Fully support law enforcement, only wish it was applied fairly in all instances. Don't know or hate your friend, just beleive everyone should be held accountable for their actions. [The B&E did end on this end of town AFTER he was questioned}. Did not say the men were guilty, said "IF". Not making a racial issue, it is what it is. Now that you know their skin color, it's safe to say that I did not "infer". Many years fighting under this constitution and having to depend on "EVERYBODY" taught me to see people and things as they are, not the way I would like to PRETEND they are. Lambchop--if you find a cop to stop the boom, boom that wakes us a night, send him my way!!!!!

Did the burglaries stop? Give the men their due process and let a jury decide whether there was probable cause and then if the evidence is there, convict...it's apparent that the NPD did something right since the burglaries have ceased...as for the "rich white boy", if they had proof they'd have arrested him...terminology like that is just more race baiting and class divisiveness in IMHO. It shouldn't matter whether he is a he or she or a white/black/green or rich/poor...all that matters is whether they are guilty or not!
Let's wait and watch justice grind to a decision, if they are innocent they will be set free and I'm sure the "rich white boy" will again come under suspicion...in any event, he is now under closer scrutiny by both his father and the authorities.
