All fingers point in one direction
Published Friday, April 4, 2008
By now we all know that Natchez Regional Medical Center is in debt. The once strong, bastion of healthcare has turned into a brick and tile tower of debt.
Hopefully, the bankruptcy plans in the works will help resolve some of the problems as the board — and ultimately the citizens who own the facility — figure out its long-term future.
So the obvious question is: How did this happen and who is at fault?
While it’s easy to point to many things — these types of problems rarely happen overnight and rarely involve just one mistake — there is one continual, underlying problem — the hospital’s management.
Members of the board of trustees — most of whom are just everyday citizens, not hospital professionals — have suggested they aim to oust Quorum Health Systems, the Brentwood, Tenn., based company that has provided management assistance to the board since 1992.
Since that time Quorum has brought several chief executive officers and chief financial officers in to provide expertise to help run the hospital.
Obviously, their efforts have failed — miserably.
Quorum’s performance was so bad that only a month or so after announcing the first profitable fiscal year in half a dozen years, the hospital board discovered the previous chief financial officer was reporting inaccurate data.
The “cooked books” left in the wake of the poor executive choices isn’t the reason the hospital is in debt. All the CFO’s shenanigans did was delay the discovery of how bad things had become.
The mismanagement goes much deeper and the only logical person to blame is Quorum. They’re a cancer on Natchez Regional that needs to be removed — quickly.

Diagnose the cancer carefully. If, indeed, it can be laid at the door of Quorum Management, there should be some legal remedies to pursue as well. Do not just fire them; make them provide the fixes.

The Board and management of NRMC are to blame here. They should have gotten rid of Quorum a long time ago, and not waited until we were 25 million in debt. There seems to be a lot of head turning here.

All the "little people" at NR have known for years that Quorum was breaking the bank. While management has done nothing but add to their numbers until they are top heavy, and give themselves raises, the people who do the real work have had to deal with no raises, hours being cut, and working short staffed. This puts patients safety in jeopardy.

"Natchez Regional Medical Center’s CEO Jeffrey Wesselman and Chairman of the Board of Trustees Dan Bland recently presented a check for $10,000 to Natchez Trails consultant Sandy Middleton and Natchez City Engineer David Gardner to assist in reaching the required local match of $500,000. The hospital and the trails have also formed a partnership for HealthQuest, the fitness-focused incentive program designed by NRMC to promote physical fitness in Natchez and the surrounding area. Hospital officials joined the effort to fund the Trails in its early stages and are excited about the potential health benefits the development offers the community."
Look what Weezleman did with $10,000 of our money...pissed away!!!1

Middleton & Gardner should be forced to return the money. There is already a walking trail that the taxpayer built in Duncan Park that is beautiful & paid for. They are making the hard working employees take a pay cut while the hospital board gives away $10,000 on foolish projects.Shame on all involved !!!!

Here we go again!!! Why does the Democrat always deflect the truth. Who hired this bunch of idiots called Quorum. The Board did or had some input on it if I have read right in the past. I have read and heard it's not their fault or they didn't know. I don't believe the Democrat has done enough research or investigative journalism on the Board or upper management to be calling who was at fault. Sure Quorum lied, but who let them get away with it for so long. How could so many employees have the gut feeling and know something was wrong and the board didn't? When, if ever, will the employees and people of Natchez ever know or read in the Democrat who on the board knew what and when did they know it? Most of these people on the board are local business men in Natchez, some of them are powerful and they all are certainly not idiots . I wonder if they would let something like this happen under their noses in their business? There has to be some reason that they would turn a blind eye as to what was going on. I mean, if they are giving away 10,000$ checks away for a silly trails project and people think they didn't have something to do with the money? This is just more salt to an open wound. I can assure everyone out of all that money and cooked books somewhere money was funneled back to the board members and upper management. I hope that a proper audit is done on the books at the hospital. We will probably never know what really transpired here. When this story first came out I knew when Walter Brown was doing most of the talking for the board, he wasn't there for looks. He was there just in case someone started asking direct questions to the board on who knew what and when. It would have been nice if the Democrat reporter would have done so instead of taking pictures and just writing down what they said. Usually the first thing a crook does when his hand has been caught in the cookie jar is lawyer up! The big lawyers are in place, the Democrat is in their back pocket and life goes on in Natchez! http://www.natchezdemocrat.com/news/2008...

More and more items are coming out about the poor management, that is crippling our hospital? What is next? I can see more as why we need a complete new Board with some "common sense" and a good conservative management team!

Amen, Natchezenema. You hit it on the spot. NRMC had taken a loan of over a million dollars in year 2006. The board Chairman always claimed he was instrumental in getting the loan. Perhaps, Natchez Democrat can to look at who got the commission for the loan. Although they knew that they were in deep financial trouble, the Board has been pushing for the LTAC recently. Interestingly, the person who has represented to apply the CON (Mr Mansoor) for the LTAC and who wants to run it happens to be a Board members relative. May be Natchez Democrat can do some investigative journalism and shed some light on these issues. And the list goes on.......

I think the Attorney Generals office needs to hire an independent auditing firm with people who have NO links to anybody in Natchez, and see what the books show for the last TEN years. I know that alot of hospitals in the US are financially hurting but I strongly feel that the rampant stories of money being funneled out of NRMC are true. Someone needs to look at the construction projects too. An MD told me 16 years ago that an easy way to funnel money out of a hospital is with construction projects.
It's not enough to fire Quorum and change out the Board. Someone needs to look at the books for the last 10 years.

Seems like the Board of Supervisors needs to take a step forward and consider the thoughts of the last poster? Maybe even the EB of the ND in join the the "choir"!

hey GETREALNATCHEZ you must be a board member..you have only posted about the hospital. Why don't you give your real name and help the situation? The board since 1992 has ruined the place by hiring Quorem and you were probably one of the people. Do you sell furniture?

the management has been hiring drs. and paying for their salary which is 6 figures. Multiply that times 6-8 drs that have been hired and go figure. then you figure 11% that NR is paying to pers for each of these drs. this is where the money has gone. these drs. can pay for their own offices and staff and collect their own salary. some of these drs. do not even put pts in nr. one group of drs on salary even uses nch while we pay their salary. and people wonder where all the money has gone. also, when nr employees took a pay cut, quorum did not and i would be willing to be neither did the management

Get this, I had one finger cut off, two joints from the tip of my pinkie, from a law mower accident. There was no hand surgeon available from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. the next day! That's eight hours. During that time, I was driven to Jackson, MS. By that time, most of another finger died and was cut off at the same. While someone was cutting zzzzzzzz's (in Natchez), a finger was being cut offfffff (In Jackson, MS)! Just cut me a check for $10,000, someone? By the way, I don't have as many FINGERS TO POINT IN ONE DIRECTION!

Actually snatchez....I think that one plays golf and is nothing in this town but a big fat loud mouth....any clues yet...if not I have NO problem naming names.

say it loud, what don't you print your real name and get some guts. if you are going to accuse someone then you should have the guts to use your name. YOU are like a peeping tom.

Thanks sayitloud, my phone rings about some nut posting things about me. Thanks snatchez for your comment. Sayitloud you need to print your name like i am doing. i am not kin to Monsour (you misspelled it). My daughter is engaged to his son, and i have left the room to avoid a conflict of interest everytime he has appeared. He brought the idea of a Long Term Care to the hospital and that is what he does for a living. As to playing golf, yes i do play golf. i am not a full time employee of the hospital and i do not manage the hospital. when i was appointed to the board, Quorem had been there for over 15 years.
Back to the question, why don't you post under a real name. For all the people know you might be an employee of Community hospital or a member of the Regional board who wants the hospital sold to HMA.
I am awaiting your comment, coward.

oops, i meant my comments for GETREALNATCHEZ. but SAYITLOUD could do the same thing. Sorry.

yes lsumom i have heard that $300,000 of the $600,00 salary goes to the 10 plus dr's offices overhead/ staff and dr's salary/ and their PERS. The idea was to bring new dr's to natchez. Some of these dr's that NR picked up their practices last year are established in natchez. Most of the new drs have not been seen by employees. Quorum hired someone to see their patients for them. The amount of money spent on new services and drs that are not here anymore is outstanding. Did Quorum have carte blanche to spend as much money as they wanted to? Did the hospital board know and approve this? IF they did then obviously they have visions of grandeur just like Quorum because the employees have been working on the idea that there is no money for new equipment or raises but have seen a steady stream of waste. Whats wrong with the drs we have in Natchez that NR has to bring in new drs. Why isn't someone filing litigation charges against Quorum? Stop sucking the NR employees dry...go after the ones to blame for this travesty.

I have to come down on Dan's side on this one. I don't really have a dog in this fight, but I agree with him, that if you are going to snipe at least have the integrity to do it under your real name instead of doing it anonymously in a drive by.

thanks, sam. SAYITLOUD posts on everything is normally negative. She has had many posts removed. I do not understand why someone who thinks they can help the hospital does not call and tell us or come to the meeting. The trustees were handed a hospital that was broke. We do not manage it but listen to a management report. We called for an audit on the accounting system on our own and found that the numbers weren't correct. SAYITLOUD is a typical gripper who is jealous of people who want to help or offer suggestions. She cannot be helped.

Where has it been proved that sniping at individuals get anyone anyplace? To me all this petty bickering is stupid. I am not part of this conflict and don't know enough about it to give a rational, sensible argument -- pro or con. However, name calling and implying misdoing is not the way to go on this. All the dirty laundry, if there is one, will come out in the wash.
Employees of many businesses see things that are not right but they have no way to report for fear of repercussions. Regional has had it fair share of problems; but if you were to look under the covers of many other businesses you would find things are not as they appear. People have to work and to work, they must keep their mouths shut.
Some people on this blog would do better if they thought a little more before typing and then re-read what they typed before posting. You have heard about adding gasoline to a fire--- or crying fire in a crowded room. Sounds like some of that here. If you know facts - identify them as facts and disclose your source.

You can hire any management company in the world to run your business but you have to make sure they know up front that routine audits will be performed. I can assure that they will be less likely to spend your money and "cook your books". Was this done with Quorum?
You must be knowledgeable of how a business works and where the figures come from that are being reported on those books. How could anyone trust an out of state management company that could care less about the 400 plus employees of NRMC and the citizens of Adams County without doing routine auditing of those reports? When Quorum leaves Natchez, they have other jobs awaiting them.
You could also learn alot about your business by talking to the employees that make up the business. Why would employees want to keep their mouths shut? They should "see" and "feel" that their leaders are on their side and not on that of a management company that could end up causing them an undeserved paycut and an uncertain future.
Auditing could go one step forward when the supervisors audited the board. Seems like alot of work but I think the last of the largest employers left in our dwindling Adams County is worth it, dont you think?
God bless the employees of NRMC and their families. It has been known since the day Quorum set foot in the hospital that this was eventually going to happen. I feel sorry that the innocent and hard working people always have to suffer. With all that has happened, those loyal and dedicated people are still there as we speak, continuing to save lives, provide compassionate customer service and quality healthcare. Good luck to all.
