Isle moves but says they'll stay open

Published Saturday, April 5, 2008

NATCHEZ — Though the Isle of Capri casino boat has been relocated because high waters, it is staying open for business.

Jack Sours, general manager and vice president of the Isle of Capri, said this should not affect normal business.

“We don’t anticipate it affecting business at all,” he said. “The purpose of moving it is so we can keep it open and keep the public safe.”

He said as the river continues to rise, it is important to have open and consistent discussions with the city.

“The biggest issue is being in constant communication with the city,” he said. “It’s the city’s role that we maintain a safe operation in terms of public access.”

He said a high water plan has been developed and the casino and the city are following it closely.

Earlier this week, Sours and City Engineer David Gardner decided to move the casino once the river reached between 52 and 52.5 feet.

Until something else happens, the casino will remain open and is safe for passengers to board.

“We’re going to continue to monitor the water levels and that’s a constantly changing dynamic,” Sours said. “We’re comfortable with the plan in place to keep us open in the high waters.”

As always business comes first and not the safety of employees nor customers. If the river continues to rise and it probably will, then 55+ feet will have water all where their valet is. So, my question to Mr. Sours is, are you prepared to pay out lots of money to the spouses, children, parents of your employees and patrons. Because by having your business staying open your are "inviting" patrons to come to your business. Having worked on this same casino myself a few years back, employees will be fired if they don't show up due to all of the water.

As long as you have people that "dream" of getting rich, the boat will have customers !! And those that lose there auto and homes....But that doesn't matter to the boat owners, they don't believe that to be there problem..Too bad, for one day they will have to answere for it......

Those Casinos are amount to corporate CRACK they pray on the poor and the weak in mind and guess what it didn't get downtown without the help of the fine citizens of Natchez. Shame on you all.

I think you people are pretty harsh on the casino. I really don't think it's that dangerous to go down there. it's not like the river is rising so fast that you can't get away from it. as long as you don't jump in it, how would you be in danger? secondly, i've read many many comments about how the casino is scum and steals from the poor, this is a ridiculous statement. people choose how to spend their money, simple as that. if they want to blow it all on the boat then that is their problem and only their problem. these aren't children, they're adults. don't blame the casino for a weak person's addiction.

Some people would swim to get to that boat, if they had to.

I wish The Pile of Debris would just keep on rolling . The most desperate of all the people the boat has dependant on it ,is the people of Natchez . It has sunk its vile poison into all the politicians and taxpayers . The politicians are addicted to the extra tax revenue it pays the city and the citizens and taxpayers don't have an antedote .

Some of you casino haters are just too much.....worry about your own life and let others take care of thiers. If you don't like the casino....then don't go.

I dont go. I agree with others that it should just float on down the river..far, far away. I cant see that it has done Natchez much good. Most of our streets are in such terrible shape except for Canal Street and those leading down to the boat. What a shame...all just to cater to a gambling boat.

Does anyone remember when the boat was first flirting with the idea of coming here and in Louisiana that they said the money would go help the schools? DID that actually happen? Don't think so.

The casino's have helpd and hurt any state that they have set up shop. The value of the land that they occupy goes up. But, at the same time they get huge tax breaks when its first built. I personally don't go to the casino's because of my personal religous beliefs. I would rather be an example than a judge. They do pay taxes on their operations, employee taxes, etc. That state legislators seveal years ago raised the sales tax for the state of Mississippi from 6 cents to 7 cents. That 1 cent sales tax increase was supposed to be the end all to the school problems. Need I say more.

I hope the boat re-locates much further down stream. Like somewhere around the Gulf. I resent the fact, that I can no longer walk along that part of the river. The only part of the river they should be able to control is. Where they drop their ramp on the landing. That now,, no one else can use. They should have no right keeping people from walking by the river. I can't see where they have helped our town at all. I wish this and the new one would go away.
