Suspected meth lab explodes inside Ocean Springs cottage

Published Friday, April 11, 2008

OCEAN SPRINGS (AP) — One man has suffered burns after a suspected methamphetamine lab exploded inside a cottage in Ocean Springs.

Police said another man was in custody after Thursday's blast in the Gulf Park Estates area.

Sgt. Curtis Spiers, commander of the Narcotic Task Force of Jackson County, said after firefighters found the meth lab.

Spiers said Jonathan Moses, 28, was allegedly using propane to manufacture ammonia to make meth when an electric spark triggered the explosion.

Spiers said Moses was dropped off at Ocean Springs Hospital by Micah Turnley, 28, who fled the scene but was arrested several hours later by Gulfport police.

Moses was airlifted to the University of South Alabama Burn Center. His condition was unknown.

Spiers said the cottage was assigned by the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency to Moses' parents, Laverne and Beatrice Moses, who had picked up Moses' three children shortly before the explosion and were not on the scene at the time of the blast, Spiers said.

Because the children do live there, Spiers said state law required that Moses be charged with three counts of felony child endangerment. He said the children are with their grandparents.

Moses and Turnley were each charged with one count of manufacturing methamphetamine. Spiers said Turnley was under house arrest in Gulfport on previous meth-related charges.

I knew of a local couple who were busted for making meth in their home. Kids were running around with nasty dishes laying all over...remember that? Well, they got out of that really quickly so I don't believe these guys will do much time for this crime.

Should be charged with attempted murder instead of child endangerment. Any parent that puts their own children through this much danger does not deserve to be free. How in the world is this stuff still being made when you are not allowed to get some of the ingredients over the counter anymore? Something's not right.

You're right, NtzMom. Something is definitely not right here. That crap they make is all chemical...and some people shoot that stuff in their veins!!! Good night..don't they use battery acid?

I feel so bad for those babies. They were unwillingly exposed to chemicals that can damage their bodies for years to come. The houses the stuff is cooked in are unfit for anyone else to live in because of the chemical saturation. I shudder to think what could have happened to those babies if they had been in the house when it exploded. What's wrong with people today?

How stupid. Such a sad case of stupidity in action.
