Body found in Mississippi River

Published Sunday, April 20, 2008

NATCHEZ — Local authorities pulled an unidentified body out of the Mississippi River’s floodwaters Saturday.

At approximately 2:30 p.m., the Adams County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a boater in the Carthage Point Road area who said they saw a body in the river, Adams County Sheriff Ronny Brown said.

Civil Defense Director Stan Owens and the sheriff’s office search and rescue team recovered the body from the river, a male who was in an advanced state of decomposition.

“We can’t tell anything, whether he was black or white,” Brown said. “He had clothes on but no shoes. They could have washed off in the river.”

No one has been reported missing in the last two weeks in Adams County, Brown said.

“He might have floated down from upstream, and he might not,” Brown said. “He was about a mile from the river.”

Coroner James Lee said his office would obtain all of the samples necessary for DNA testing and for dental identification.

“The river is a monster, and people need to be careful out there,” Lee said.

I was told of a guy years ago, that was crossing a low water bridge above Lorman during a thunderstorm. He did not make it and somehow was washed out of his truck. The body was found below St. Francisville. This body could be from anywhere upstream.

Bozo, I agree, with all the flooding up north, and not just in this state, there's just no telling. For the family and the victim's sake however, I hope they can identify this person. Perhaps when DNA is extracted, they can run it through some sort of database.

I have really been expecting this. With such high water, there is no telling what or who may be found next.

True freedom....scary things no doubt.

All we know for sure is he was some mother's son. A pity.

This is so weard for me as i took my kids to the river the other day i was wondering if with the curent so fast and the water so high if someone fell in or if someone was mudered and dumped how far whould they go before they were found if ever. i am intrested to know if it is murder or just someone getting to close to the side eaither way it is sad

The scientist who jumped (or was thrown) off the Memphis bridge some years back was found at the power station down river.

Back in 1985 a friend, her 3 yr. old son, and her father drowned in the Homochitto River. Her father was caught under a log almost where he went in, her son was found 3 days later caught in branchs just where the Homochitto emptys into the Mississippi, and she was not found until 2 months later just above Baton Rouge during high water. My grandfather, who was with the Corps of Engineers on the river, used to say what the river takes, the river keeps. Apparently sometimes the river lets it go.

I wonder if he is connected to the people who were rescued the other day.

Hey...freedom42... Are you talking about Sandy Smith. If so I knew them and used to babysit for them. She had two boys and her son that drowned was buried with her. I tell you this river is scary looking..I was down under the hill today and a couple was letting their little boy about 4yrs old play in the water....They were from out of town and I told them the currents were bad and then man laughed saying his son knew how to swim and I'm standing right beside him.....Crazy people..

U know "neverunderstood" I haven't heard anything else about that. That's definitely something to think about.

Maybe it is Hernando DeSoto.

Missing people and bodies are a good argument for allowing a registry of DNA along with fingerprints to be compiled, beginning at birth. Instead of thinking of it as a bad thing, a registry of dna could be a lot of help in times like this when a body is found.

neverunderstood, I also wondered about Clinton Prater when I read this story, since I haven't read any follow-up story saying whether or not he had been located

Posted by overthehill60 (anonymous) on April 21, 2008 at 10:22 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Grossly as it sounds bodies can be just about narrowed down to how long they have been dead by the decomposition. Of course being in water makes it more difficult. They also said the body had clothes on. The clothing lables can be narrowed down to exactly where they were purchased. I think the clothing is how they discovered who the little girl was found in the container in the Galveston Bay.

Peace, I understand your argument for DNA and a national registry when you see something like this occur, but I have one thing to say about it being done to every individual in this country.

H--L NO!!! It is no way I am going to agree with this as long as I have breath in my body. That is another way they will be testing and doing invasion of my privacy without my permission. I want LESS GOVERNMENT INVASION in my life, not more. Sorry.

Specialty clothing can be traced, but it's very hard to trace anything else especially after floating in the river for an unknown amount of time. I live in South Houston, not far from Galveston Bay. Even with the Baby Grace case, she was inside a container, and it was a lead that actually lead to her identity.

Amen redusmfan. I agree with you 100%!!!!

Posted by overthehill60 (anonymous) on April 21, 2008 at 11:18 a.m. (Suggest removal)

((JAPs_4evr)) I was thinking it was the lable on her WalMart shoes.
Guess that's what I get for listening to Fox & CNN News.
This body will probably never be identified, but there is a much better chance of knowing than there was 10 years ago. I hope whoever it is at least will have a proper burial.
It's like ((destiny)) said it is someones son & should be respected.

Even I agree that DNA being taking from every kid at birth is a bad idea I love finding traces of anything that easier for me to make our case stronger but take it from me there are other ways it just takes alittle more work Besides we are all just humans we do make mistakes sooner or late if they did take the DNA someone will mess up then we be right back to who's DNA is it anyway

i was told today a lunch that the body was a woman, black female it must have really been in bad shape still no one missing from around this area I cannot imagine a body in that bad of shape that even the authorities not knowing what sex it was you people that recovered the body, i hope you are all ok but someone has to do this kind of job i salute you all

Posted by natchez500 (anonymous) on April 21, 2008 at 1:20 p.m. (Suggest removal)

can you imagine this body must have been in the river a long time they might nevr know who she is or anything about her death I do hope it was not murder and dumped there

Posted by firered (anonymous) on April 21, 2008 at 1:23 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The article states that it is a male though... Hmm... Wonder which it is???? Andy how reliable is your source? Maybe the Democrat will follow up on this..

Posted by overthehill60 (anonymous) on April 21, 2008 at 2:51 p.m. (Suggest removal)

((firered)) I'm with you, I hope the Democrat will do an update.
It looks like by the clothing they could tell it were male or female.

No DNA from us! Too much like Orwells book "1984", and Big Brother. I want as little government intervention in my life as possible, and I will never submit to a microchip in my body. I don't even want an ONSTAR in my car.

southern_bell, thats who I am talking about, but I don't remember them being buried together. I remember going to the Luthern Church for a memorial service, but I was thinking they were all found at different times and places several weeks apart. But I am getting senile! My oldest son was the same age as her oldest boy and she was their Cub Scout leader.

New to writing comment although I've been reading your commnets on and off. Very interesting!
Regarding Chips under the skin, anyone ever read the Book of Revelation in the Bible? Does this sound like the mark of the beast to anyone?

((pictureperfect)) Excellent first post, it couldn't have been said better!

Posted by pictureperfect (anonymous) on April 21, 2008 at 9:24 p.m. (Suggest removal)

OldGrandDad, yes the forehead and hand is mentioned. I'm only saying that chips are already being used to find our pets if they get lost and to keep up with cattle in case of mad cow disease, etc. It is all for good, right? Of course the chips already being used are not the actual 666 (mark of the beast) but what it is doing is making this commonplace. After a while we think nothing about having a chip implanted. Believe me, folk, we are living in the last of the last days. Are you ready?

Posted by OldGrandDad (anonymous) on April 21, 2008 at 9:35 p.m. (Suggest removal)

pictureperfect, I absolutely agree with you when you say that we are living in the "last days". Hebrews 1:2 tells us this is so. And we are. And yes I am.

With everything that's happening now-a-days, it does make you wonder if we are in the "last days". If so, yes, I'm ready to meet my maker!

freedom42....I may of been mistaken, I could of swore my Aunt told me they were....But I too am getting old and senile...LOL I just always remember my Aunt saying how sweet it was for them to be buried together...

((pictureperfect)) you hit the nail right on the head... we are living our last days... And i am along with my childern are ready to go HOME when it is our time to go... I have always been up front with my babies and they are not scared they are asking questions of course but they aren't scared... they know that when we leave this place we are only going to the greatest, safest, most loving, home that we could ever imagine....

Sorry I missed out on this conversation. Really we have been living in the last days since the crucifixion, but the end is getting very close. And I and all my family are ready to go home!
