Ferriday cops arraigned

All three officers plead not guilty to various charges

Published Thursday, April 24, 2008

VIDALIA — Three of the five people indicted in connection with a grand jury investigation of the Ferriday Police Department were arraigned in court Wednesday.

Officer Rickey Hollins, former officer Willie B. Robinson and civilian Arthur Johnson all pleaded “not guilty” to the charges against them.

Both Hollins and Johnson are scheduled for a trial of motions, a legal step preceding a trial on July 23.

A preliminary exam for Robinson was set for Aug. 20. A preliminary exam is a hearing to determine if a person charged with a crime should be tried on those charges.

Hollins is charged with false imprisonment, simple battery and aggravated assault in connection with an arrest that reportedly involved pepper spray. Hollins was released on a $24,000 bond after he was arrested in March.

Robinson is charged with false imprisonment and malfeasance in office in connection to a 2006 arrest he made. Robinson was released on a $6,500 bond.

Johnson — a former towing-service employee — was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle because he allegedly moved a vehicle after an arrest without proper permission. Johnson was released on a $5,000 bond.

Two others who were indicted after the investigation, former Ferriday Police Chief Robert “Rock” Davis and former officer Juanita January, did not appear in court Wednesday.

Davis faces charges of false imprisonment and malfeasance in office, and January is charged with carnal knowledge of a juvenile.

Davis is free on a $6,500 bond, and January was released on a $20,000 bond after her arrest.

someone needs to contact the federal authories and get them involve, because concordia parish D.A. is abusing his office. these people should'nt have been charge with these crimes.there isn't a jury in this country that will find them guilty. and to charge a tow truck driver for removing a vehicle at the request of an officer is ludacris.I HOPE THEY ALL HAVE GOOD LAWYERS AND SUE THE HELL OUT OF CONCORDIA PARISH FOR THERE DISTRICT ATTY. STUPIDITY AND RACIALLY MOVITATED ACTIONS. SOME PEOPLE JUST ABUSE THERE AUTHORITY AND THINK THEY CAN DO WHAT THE HELL THEY WANT.*******IF ANY ONE PERSONALLY KNOWS ANY OF THESE OFFICERS ADVISED THEM TO CONTACT A FEDERAL DISTRICT ATTY. AND PLACED A COMPLAINT WITH THEM. ALSO CONTACT AND HIRE A CIVIL RIGHTS LAWYER.****************

The ones that thought they could do whatever the hell they want were the cops.

These cops have done whatever they want now for quite sometime and I know this from personal experience. I'm not sure what the "black huh?" comment means; but they are not all black...January is white.

I wouldn't mine being on that jury!!!They have done what ever, and to who ever they have wanted. I think they should pay for their injustice caused to the public.

I do agree with 1 statement acedog made, someone needs to contact the federal authorities because these charges only scratch the surface of what has been going on in Ferriday.

Let's hear the testimony of the accusers and the stories of anybody else who felt they were treated unfairly by these law enforcement officials.

The tow guy, that's a reach. He was doing what a cop told him, unless there is more to the story yet to be told.

Will this be a he said, she said, racially charged event for Ferriday? Too bad it won't be only about right and wrong. We shall see in the months to come.

Well i know things from experience too dealing with some of the officers & i belive the actions brought aganist them are true & if not their prob. paying for something they have done from the past that someone decided to let go and not file charges about. & IAM SO SICK OF EVERY THING BEING ABOUT RACE.Some people use the civil rights law to get out of what they have done.

Posted by bbm39120 (anonymous) on April 24, 2008 at 8:45 a.m. (Suggest removal)

always about race, what about breaking the law, these officers thought they were above the law, so when they break it, they want to scream race, im sick to death of everything that happens, discrimination is the first word out of their mouth. Maybe the DA will shut them up this time.

It's been a while since I have seen ole Jessie and Al; weren't they here last year (for the whole Jena 6 episode).

beammeup you are EXACTLY right the ONLY ones abuseing their positions are the clowns that call themselves protecting and serveing the town of Ferriday!!!!! I hope if they are found guilty then they are punished to the fullest extent of the law. Come one people are we really suprised that someone would get on here and play the race card.

My grandmal use to say if you lay with the dogs you are going to get fleas .Maybe we should just bring in a hole new group of fresh clean puppys .But after a while they get the big head and fleas too then we are right back to new pups.I think we should not give so much power to them thats where they get the idea they run the town and no one can touch them. May be if we had them all looked and watched by the state real close it might help some.

Posted by bestwoman (anonymous) on April 24, 2008 at 9:57 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I don't understand you people. Everyone that lives between Natchez and Ferriday knows that everything that is being said about these officers is nothing, but the truth. Everytime something like this comes up it always has to be a race issue. This makes me sick. There are to many people that have got away with the race issue thing, and now it is just a sickening issue. This is about dirty cops, and I repeat DIRTY COPS. I believe there are just some people, okay, a lot of people that are scared to stand up to these people. Scared that if they do come out and say anything that something might really happen to them. What these people don't realize is that these are just small town cops that really aren't anything!!!Come on we all know the truth here, and it's about time everyone admits it.

Posted by daris (anonymous) on April 24, 2008 at 10:18 a.m. (Suggest removal)

You know it's easy for you all to say that we always pull the race card. Come on I'm sick and tired of you all pretending that you don't know that blacks get treated differently than whites. I'm not one to keep saying that but it makes me mad when you all want to act like it's not true. As for Rev. Jackson and Sharpton if they hadn't taken that stand than Michael Bell would have still been in jail. I'm not saying what happen because I wasn't there but I know one thing if it wasn't racial than why did he sit in jail that long? Kids fight everyday at school and it had never been taken that far. One thing I do try to get my race to understand, that the guy that the Jena 6 suppose to have jumped on again I wasn't there, his own race would call him poor white trash and just as soon walk on him than talk to him, but when it came to it you all was on his side because those where black kids. So please stop trying to pretend that we are over reacting and hollering rascism when you know that is what it is. White cops everyday get away with a lot "nothing said". I notice that a few comments was made when this article came out the first time about when they were still getting paid, well I have seen in the papers and heard on the news where white cops gunned down someone in the black race and guess what they are suppended with pay "don't here anything than".

It is sickening!!! I don't care if you are black, white, green, purple or so on. Come on, we are all people and everyone makes mistakes. I don't care what color you are. People take this crap and run with it. It's not the point in who's black, and who's white. These officers are the ones that got caught doing this. I can't help it that they are black. I feel if it was white officers they should get the same treatment as these are. EVERYONE KNOWS THAT WHAT THEY DONE IS TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They just don't want to admit it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did any else besides me see the interview the "tow truck driver" gave KNOE just after the arrests? Johnson ADMITTED on there that he DID NOT even have a license to drive a tow truck so he wasn't the one who got in that person's vehicle. Yet this same man WAS driving the tow truck and has been seen by nearly every one in and around Ferriday doing so.
The rest of the current and former "officers" have been abusing the authority they were given. It will all come out in trial.

Yes, to some extent I agree with you jammin1, but this is Concordia Parish and it doesn't matter if it all comes out in trial. I do not believe that these officers will get what they need. They might get a slap on the hand and be told never to do it again, but I hope that isn't the case, I really hope all of them get REAL JAIL TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Daris: I agree the jena6 was to do with race and it was wrong. But this is not about the Jena 6 and u r still pulling out the race card and People r Sick of it. White cops go to jail everyday in Baton Rouge and u dont hear us whites using the race issue to justify what they have done. They put in the the last paper only young white girls was complaining about speeding tickets but that is not true I have Black Friends and Family so I know black people also complained.White people go to jail everyday there so no whites are not treated any diffrent its about who u know not about race no mateer what color u r.So quit trying to say all whites r racist u have a lot of blacks that r racist. January is white and slept with a younger black male so was she arrested due to race no she was arrested because she broke the law and should be punished.

Hey bestwoman (must be pretty conceited to name yourself that), pipe down. Sometimes, people on here like to joke around instead of discussing events as if we were in the local nursing home.

Sometimes the comments left on this site are so boring I dose off while "scanning" through them.

Racial issue or not, who cares? Racism exist rather you like it or not. "Dirty cops" exist too, once again, rather you like it or not. Besides, how do you even know any of these cops are black or white (especially with a name like Juanita January)!

DING DING!!

Posted by nene (anonymous) on April 24, 2008 at 11:33 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Why did they bring race in it to begin with. When the cops are black and a lot of their victims were black. Its being done to the blacks also. A few years back Ricky Hollins was complained on for spraying a friend of mine in the face with pepperspray and he was black and wasnt doing anything wrong not even going to jail after Ricky sprayed him he left.My friend went to the mayors office and complained and nothing was ever done. Maybe if Ferriday would have went by the law this would not be going on now. Ricky Hollins is known for spraying people with pepperspray. To whites and blacks so its not about race it is about right and wrong. He is in the wrong and should be punished.Just like anyone else. Whether he is a cop or not. Its the LAW we have to abide by it so should they. That is why laws r made. Cops everywhere and of every race break the law everyday. But they get away with it most the time. This time these officers didnt and they should be punished to the fullest. Just like regular people white and black. They did wrong by LAW they should have to pay for it.

Number one, no I'm not conceited. It's just a name. Number two, I know Juanita January personally so I know she is white!!!!!!!!! Number three, I believe that she should go to jail because she slept with a under age CHILD not because she is white!!!!!!!!!! Number four, I know most of these offices and I know that what they are being accused of is very true!!! So no I want pipe down sorry. Me and a few others on here really and truly know these people!!! Thats why we can talk. So now obamayamama can you really say that you can talk about these issues because you really know these people?!

Posted by acedog (anonymous) on April 24, 2008 at 11:37 a.m. (Suggest removal)

these officers are been charge with aggravated assault for using pepper spray in there daily duties. there is nothing criminal about that. if the victims in this case beleive the officers use unnecessary force.then thats a case for a civil court to decide. again the D.A. IS ABUSING HIS AUTHORITY AND HAS FALSELY CHARGE THESE OFFICERS. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CRIMINAL LIABILTY AND CIVIL LIABILTY. IF THESE OFFICERS HAVE AN ATTORNEY,THERE GOING TO BE RICH BECAUSE OF THE CONCORDIA PARISH DISTRICT ATTORNEY STUPIDITY AND ABUSE OF AUTHORITY

The things one can pick up on the ND comments..

Now bestwoman, you may need to go take some blood pressure medicine. Looks to me like you are about to blow a gasket.

Since when do we live under a communist government where I can not talk about issues concerning people I do not know? You must run the pants in your family, I feel sorry for your husband (if you even have one).

lol, no blood pressure medicine for me, thanks. Your the one that started this by acting like I didn't know what I was talking about and if you will look back I'm not the only one that has said things here about Juanita, so I don't understand why you pointed out me. I just wanted to let everyone including you know that I know these people, and I know what all they have done!! I was not trying to be rude in any way! You can speak your mind about anything, I just know these people personally. Not only will I post things about these people, but I am not scared to say all this to their faces! Oh, yes I am married and my husband loves me. We have a 50 50 relationship. Kinda sounds like your a little jeolous of my life. bestwoman, you started by stating that you were "sickened" and accusing others of turning this into a race issue.

I was simply trying to have a laugh and you come in with the whole "It is sickening!!!" thing. Where is the world did you conceive an idea such as "Kinda sounds like your a little jeolous of my life". HAHAHAHA! Are you kidding me? hahah... I swear, people's comments on here always seem to crack me up. I could really care less of your tedious life especially when you admit to knowing these people (and the gossip that occurs in the area). There are more things in this world to talk about beside Juanita January sleeping with an underage person.

Posted by bestwoman (anonymous) on April 24, 2008 at 5:37 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Well, obamayamama if you would look back you would realize that I was commenting on what others have said about the race issue! I was not the only one. You picked me out from all the rest, but as I see on all your comments you do pick one out of the bunch. If you would look on my name you would know this is the first subject that I have said anything on! I have lived in this place a very long time, and I know a lot of people. Don't get it wrong just because you know them, does not mean you associate with them. I believe you need to learn that. It does sicken me about people saying stuff about race. It's all crazy. We all came from GOD. We are all the same. So get over the white, black issue. Yeah, your right people's comments actually crack me up to. Oh, and by the way what I say isn't gossip. If I have something to say I know what I'm saying and I don't go by what others say!!! I also just realized also that I didn't even talk about Juanita first that was nene I believe, but since you had said something about her I was just gonna let you know the FACTS that I knew about her. I am truly sorry if I offended you in anyway, but I was just saying COLD FACTS. This issue isn't just on Juanita sleeping with CHILDREN. It's about the cops in Ferriday that think they are higher than everyone else and can get away with anything. Thank you and have a great night.

Posted by ThornInYourSide (anonymous) on April 24, 2008 at 5:39 p.m. (Suggest removal)

On the subject of this race card thing, I think that the government should just do away with all of these laws on racial discrimination along with welfare and food stamps. The race card is well over-played and abused. Anytime someone black is arrested or gets in trouble, everyone wants to say that the white man is just trying to discriminate against them and eventually the accused gets off without so much as a slap on the wrist because everyone is afraid of being sued for discrimination. COME ON PEOPLE! No one here was ever a slave. Their parents were never slaves. And I doubt that their grandparents were even slaves. America doesn't owe you anything. Slavery was a long time ago and the ones that were slaves are probably long gone by now. At one point and time, every race was slaves. Go back and look at your history and read the bible. Lots of races have been slaves at one point or another. Quit dwelling on, "Well, my ancestors were slaves so you owe me this and that." Nobody owes you anything. Get out and get a job and support yourself. I am sick of seeing people who have $500 in food stamps every month, driving around in brand new cars with expensive rims, stereos, jewerly, clothes, no job or some part-time minimum wage job, and buying alcohol by the cart loads and partying every weekend, while my family and I bust our butts day after day just to keep our heads above water. Then you hear everyday that whites are treated better than the blacks. Quit looking for a hand-out and expecting everything handed to you just because of your race. And Micheal Bell and the Jena 6 should have done serious jail time because as far as I am concerned 6 on 1 is just like attempted murder. Since when does it take 6 boys to beat up one person? That boy didn't even have a chance to defend hisself against 6 attackers. And just so you know, there is an incident in florida right now where 6 WHITE girls jumped on another WHITE girl and beat her almost to death and they have charged them with every crime that they can possiblly find. So why should the jena 6 or the ferriday cops be any different? If you break the law, you should be punished.

You know "ThornInYourSide" you did sum it all up. I would also like to add that "Rock Davis." he use to drive a school bus when I was still in school. Well he loved himself some white women. So I guess after going to work he changed his attitude or maybe that was part of the problem because they would not pay him any attention. I am so glad I am away from that place. Those cops in Ferriday did target whites. There is lots of people "whites" that were pulled over from out of town etc. There are also lots of whites who do not have the nerve to stand up and report them for fear of retaliation. Im so glad Glen got re-elected. No things were not perfect but they were much better. Those cops need to be getting the teenage kids off the streets from 1st street thru 8th street. That whole place from Clayton to the Vidalia city line is a dump. Maybe things will get better around there. I also have a question if anybody can answer. I live in Houston Texas now. There are more crackheads on the streets of Ferriday & Clayton than it is here. How is that? Also how can the people be so different in this area than in that area? I am talking about blacks and whites. How can this be?

Thorn, get a grip, Stop Hatin'! It seems to me if you can't keep your head above water, you need to try the other way. Most intelligent people know that what you see is not always what you get! You don't know everyone's situation so don't judge all based on a few. One more thing, if it's that bad for you (bustin your butt and still drowning) why would those that you are referring to want to work? So they can drown too? Your statement would have made since, had you left that part out. Oh, yes Blacks deserve to be compensated for what their ancestors slaved for. That was the purpose! By the way, I'm Black with rims and don't need any handouts! So stereotypical!

Thank you, ThornInYourSide!! It's time to get over it. As far as Michael Bell goes, he left Jena & went to Monroe. Got arrested. Left Monroe & went to Texas. Got arrested. But you don't see that splashed all over the news. Where are his homeboys Al & Jessie now????

Too Sweet , thorns statement made perfect sense. He works because that was what he was taught and yet has to sit and watch all others ride around, draw food stamps and live on the taxes that we pay the goverment. And no they do not need to be compensated for what their ancestors slaved for...that's what is wrong with that area today is the mentality of people like you. I sure hope you do not have children that you are teaching your values to..Do you work? Honest work? Get over it....

If all of you think that all blacks are like that, then you are wrong. I am also sick and tired of other races getting on here throwing welfare at us Blacks as a whole. I myself am a Black mother raising my Black son alone without any kind of government aid. I chose not to. I don't need the man giving me handouts. I work 8 hours a day just like you all proudly claim to, and I work on side jobs so my son can have a good life. But do you all see that. A lot of Blacks are like me, but you chose to throw the worst at us every chance you get, because that is an easy argument for you. As far as the Jena 6 situation, yes they were wrong, but what message did the white kids send by hanging ropes from a tree? Are you all condoning that hate message, and do you think it wasn't wrong? I believe this is not a race issue and that the ploceman in Ferriday should be punished if they are guilty. Yes, my "toes are stepped on", because I am tired of all of this, just like you all are tired of "us". By the way, how can you tell that the Blacks who wear the "bling bling" are getting welfare? I wear good clothes, because I care for my appearance. I drive a good vehicle, because I want to ride in one. I wear jewelry, because I want to compiment my wardrobe. I have a bar-b-que just like you do, because I deserve to have the fun. I do all of this, but I bust my ass to get it. So I guess you would see me and think that I get $500 worth of food stamps, then huh? If you didn't mean all of this, then that's the way you all said it. You called out Blacks as a whole. Yes, I am upset, because I am tired just like you.

Yes, buy the way, there are lazy races everywhere, including whites. I believe that whoever does wrong, deserves whatever the punishment may be! I don't care what skin color that person has. Say what you want to say about me, and bash me too, but I can voice my opinion just like you do.

Posted by bestwoman (anonymous) on April 24, 2008 at 11:14 p.m. (Suggest removal)

drawpaintsing, I also agree with you! Not all blacks are like that nor is "us" whites. We have trashy whites as well as blacks. As for as the food stamp thing goes there are a lot of white and blacks on them, and a lot of times these people don't work and live life by others. People like you should be proud regardless of what color you are. You raise your child and don't ask for any help. Don't get me wrong I'm for food stamps ONLY IF YOU REALLY NEED THEM! as in if you have a job and your trying for yourself! I'm not talking about people that keep having babies just to get more. And I to am just speaking my opinion. I do not want to step on anyones toes.

Posted by drawpaintsing (anonymous) on April 24, 2008 at 11:29 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Yes, bestwoman, I have an issue with people who have babies, because they know that they are taken care of. I just have a problem with people using that as an excuse to stereotype a race as a whole. It gripes my ass. I know at least one person of both the Black and white race who abuse the system like that. I personally think it is lack of morals. If they would cut out all of the benefits, a lot of deserving people will miss out. Believe me, it is hard doing it alone, and yes I could easily quit my job and get on welfare. But I have enough dignity for myself, and I am trying to teach my son to do the same, so he can teach his children. That way my generation can go on doing the right thing. I appreciate what you said, but a lot of people don't feel like you do. I know that ticked me off, but I am just tired, because us "good blacks" are having a hard time.

Hello all this thing has gotten way off the subject of what it is really about ( just what the people that were arrested want ) As long as the attention is off of them .This is not a BLACK or WHITE ISSUE . So may be we all need to give up to JESUS . Yes we all should be able to voice our opinion.

Posted by bestwoman (anonymous) on April 24, 2008 at 11:37 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I understand that, and us "good whites" have the same problem. I to know both white and black couples that are like this and it's wrong, but we can't change it. This race thing will never end and it's ashame really it is. Blacks don't owe whites anything and Whites don't owe blacks anything. The past is the past. I look up to all that take care of their family the best they can!!!!!

Clbs, you know what, you are correct! I don't usually let things bother me, but i guess sometimes we get tired of the same old thing. Will it ever change?

It's time for me to go to bed anyway, because if I don't get enough sleep, I will have a hard time making my Friday productive.

Good night all, and God Bless!

Hey, don't forget to pray!

Hmm...sounds like my previous comment struck a nerve with a couple of people. One thing I learned a long time ago is that an innocent man accused of something has no worries because he knows that he is innocent. But when a guilty man is accused, he gets defensive trying to prove his innocence. If you are one of the many hardworking people out there just trying to make a living then nothing I said should have offended you. If anything you should have felt the same frustation that I felt when you see people living off of your tax dollar and you having to do without week after week. As far as the comment about why do I continue to work my butt off and not be able to keep my head above water, I do it for reasons other than the money. I am in a field of the emergency services, and the feeling of helping someone in need is greater than the feeling of seeing the paycheck for $3000 a week in my bank account when I was a boiler maker. Now, I tell you what, next time one of your loved ones, friends, or even you are in need of a police officer, paramedic, or firefighter, why don't you ask them why they do their job for so little at the end of the week. And NO! Blacks don't deserve any compensation for what their ancestors went through. What makes you think that you deserve compensation for what happened 100 years ago? What kind of emotional, or physical sufferring have you been through because of what your ancestors went through? If any one race deserves anything, it would be the American Indian, because they are the ones that lost everything. I mean think about it. This use to all be theirs until the settlers came over here, took everything from them, and then forced them onto a reservation. But you don't hear them complaining and living in the past do you? No you don't. And one other thing I wanted to mention. How come you have to take regular drug test for most jobs now, but no drug test is required for food stamps, welfare, or any other government assistance. I mean if you are on drugs or an alcoholic, you shouldn't get any type of assistance until you get off of the drugs and alcohol. Why give someone more money to help support their addictions?

Thorn, did you not read what I wrote to bestwoman about how I feel about people who abuse the system? I clearly stated that it struck a nerve with me. Yes, I said what I said to prove that I am not what you said I was, but not to make you feel like I was being offensive to you. If you feel that way, then that is your problem. As a matter of fact if I didn't have so much taken out of my check to take care the lazy bunch, then I wouldn't have to work side jobs sometimes. It burns me up. But since you said how you felt, I'd thought that I had to express how I feel.

But good night to you too, and don't forget to pray.

thank you bestwoman. I just hope everyone understands where i am coming from and don't take what i am saying as just being racist because believe me, I am far from it. But I just think that it is a time for a change.

I am not offended by anything that anybody says drawpaintsing. I was just simply responding to the comments by some saying that blacks do deserve to be compensated for being slaves and also for the comment of "If you can't keep your head above water, you need to try the other way".

You are more than welcome Thorn. I understand where you are coming from. I feel the same way. It will never change. Our kids will hear this, their kids and so on until the world ends.

Drawpaintsing I always admire you for the wisdom that you you show in your posts. It seems a shame that there is always someone that sinks to the level of comparing everyone who is Black with the same standard...

I agree with vidalia1.. Drawpaintsing you always carry yourself beautifully!!!! I admire you for that!

The race card is the joker wild. It pisses everyone off and then they can't focus on the real problem at hand. Society has standards of right and wrong and whoever feels like they are being looked down on needs a defense.

So, Voila, the inferiority complex comes charging out to the rescue. And for some reason, whichever group we belong to, we assume that the other is including each and every one of us in their accusation and blame. I'm tired of chips on shoulders and right and wrong being muddied by race. When we let it happen, wrong becomes acceptable and we all lose in the end. But if we resist wrong we are labeled as the bad guy.

There are people of all colors who do things that pull us all down. It's as simple as that. I refuse to feel guilty for what I think is right and just.

The kids in Jena let a stupid thing that a stupid kid did stir them up to where one of the black kids committed a crime. He and whoever with him beat a child almost to death. And somehow that was justified. The noose was wrong, the beating was wrong and two wrongs don't make a right. But Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson sticking their press hungry, self-serving, capitalizing on fear and anger interests necks into the equation justifies those who don't want to live and work together under the same rules.

You can't have equality and peace when you don't want the same things. The push back is natural from those who don't appreciate constantly being beat with the race stick.

MY OPINION...... IF YOU DO THE CRIME YOU SHOULD BE PUNISHED FOR IT...I AM A FORMER RESIDENT OF FERRIDAY'fonkytown'LOUISIANA AND I KNOW WHAT ITS LIKE ....BUT AS FAR AS THE RACE THING....I JUST HOPE AND PRAY WE CAN BE WISE AND MAKE POSITIVE DECISIONS ABOUT BECAUSE ITS NOT WORTH IT...

I'm just plain old Drawpaintsing. I just wish things can be better, but what's the chance of that happening.

Everything you said was correct, SAYITRIGHT!
